NOTE: I only picked Superbrothers because I worked with Craig at the last company he was at before he struck it big with his title ;) My game isn't listed on here because it's a different platform.

Hey there, I'm a developer of a game called Polara. It was on the mobile market for a while but due to constraints, grandfathered updates, budget, loss of programmer, PR issues, etc. we couldn't do much with the game when Sony came knocking on our door to put it on the VITA.

A publisher took our product under their wings, Circle Entertainment, and ported the game over to the 3DS and the Vita in Japan. The game is now launching here in North America and Europe on the 15th(completely surprised us) and it will be on the eShop for the 3DS.

Getting the word out is near impossible unless you drop a lot of cash or spend 18 hours a day hammering the streets...which is what I did when the company was running well. Ended up being published on PennyArcade.com and making it onto Electric Playground on TV.

At one point Zynga wanted us to work with them but they wanted more IAP in our title...we were fighing the idea of freemium and DLC crap for a long time, but it won out and our title wasn't designed for those types of money traps so...we simply sank into nothingness.

The sad part is, for all our work, we got great reviews of the title and have a metacritic score fo 8.3 right now and was considered one of the best free runners on the platform because of the design and twitch gameplay.

Anyway...it's been one hell of a road for us to even be at this point(which is to say...not even working on games anymore) and to have the game come out now is somewhat bittersweet. I've gone through a lot of tragic stuff but I won't go into details.

I was hoping you guys would be able to answer the poll letting me know what you think of 3DS titles, if you buy them, if you even bother with that console, etc. It's really for fun. I don't have a budget for any PR or anything, so whomever finds the game on there will be pleasantly surprised at how much they end up swearing and smiling at the same time haha

I haven't tried the 3DS version yet, so I'm excited. I took a risk with hardly any funds and worked my ass off for years through tragedy just because I wanted to prove I could do it.

If you have any questions or just wanna talk shop, I'm more that available to chat here.

Thanks guys!
Dennis

How many eShop indie titles do you buy on your 3DS(if you have one)?

View Results
One a month
One every few months
One every six months
Once a year
Never, I don't like those types of games

3DS Physical titles? Sure. Digital? Not really for the most part. Two reasons. The biggest reason being that Nintendo locks your digital purchases to a system instead of an account like wtf. The other reason being that the eShop sales are pretty bad.

Yeah that was something I was worried about. The access to titles online, like Steam, seems to be the way to go. This proprietary system most console creators have are way too locked down and squeeze the enjoyment out of the purchase.

I only buy 3DS indies if they are cheap and have a good discount, I think I own like 4 or 5.

What's your idea of cheap? What would be a cheap price, and what would be a considerable enough discount to goad you into a sale?

Cheap = $5 or less.
A very good discount would be -50%, but I will think it if it is for -30%.
A good example is The legend of Dark Witch, $3.99 and right now it is 30% off ($2.79).
And I always watch gameplays & reviews before buying, that's important.

I play a lot on the 3DS, and I buy physical and digital. It is possible to move your purchases from one 3DS to another, but can't use two at once. Sales are lackluster there, but it doesn't deter me from buying games. I'd say it varies but what is available I might go a few months buying none, but have a month where I buy 5.

Do you find you wait for sales or bundles or whatever? Or do you anticipate the games?

A little of both. It depends on the cost versus want. And this varies too on my mood, and timing. During the school year, it's a lot harder for me to play games.

I have a 3DS and I obviously buy games for it - I haven't ever bought anything on the eShop though. It may be a lot to do with being an older gamer, I don't know, but when I say I never buy eShop titles it isn't necessarily because I don't like those kinds of games...

No that's cool man, I'm kinda the same way really. If it's nostalgic, I'll consider it, but there's so many tiny titles out there that it's hard to judge what the hell to get, right? And even then you have to jump through hoops to get the account running and also the size issue, where does it get stored, etc.

If I had to explain I'm fundamentally suspicious of 'download' services. I often like to play games that I first bought/played years or even decades ago and I much prefer physical media. Steam isn't ideal but has proved itself too useful to ignore and I'm familiar enough with the community to judge what are good buys - but after bad experiences elsewhere I'm just fairly reluctant to spend money on most other services.

Well I've seen some footage of the game on youtube, on the 3DS, and it seems to be an all right port. Unfortunately it didn't have my creative touches on it haha and the movement has much less frames than the mobile version, but it looks pretty much like the mobile title.

I wonder if I can get keys for it to distribute on here hmmm
