About a hour ago I opened my PC, and blew all the dust out with a pressure blower. There was a huge amount of dust, especially in the fans, good thing I did it outside. Also cleaned my keyboard. My PC seems to be making less noise now. :D
I just decided to make this topic to remind people that you should clean your PC at least once a year, so it doesn't get damaged by the dust.

+1. Most underrated PC maintenaince measure.
I clean mine at the beginning of each Summer. I prefere Hoovering it, so I don't have to unplug it. I just have to take off the GPU to better reach its fan. :)

A pressure blower instead of compressed air works too, as long as you don't use too much power.

I don't feel like buying equipment for that :S But maybe I should ask my dad if he has something I could use. Thanks for the idea. Vacuum cleaner really doesn't do the job too well.

All you really need to clean the dust out is a pressure blower or compressed air, and a screwdriver to open your computer. My dad has a pressure blower so we used that, but compressed air cans should be cheap (unless you mean that you don't want to the shop just for that). True, a vacuum cleaner isn't very good for cleaning a PC, since you can't clean the dust from areas behind some parts.

This will do the job if you dont have the equipment.
I for myself just use carefully my hoover and didn't have problems for years.

You can easily buy a can of compressed air. Cheap, too. Got one a while ago from... Well, I don't know where because I didn't actually get it, my dad did. I'm assuming Home Hardware, or something along those lines?

It's been about 3 or 4 months since I last cleaned my PC, I only just built it in November of last year, I can't imagine how dusty it is in there though... o_O

I live in a really old building, so dust accumulates a lot quicker apparently... >_<

I think I might have to open her up and give her a nice cleaning later today, thanks for reminding me. lol

Yesterday, I just sent my notebook to service because of dusts. I'm using my parents' notebook now but it has some problems about disk usage. Some annoying spikes occurs constantly, still i couldn't find the reason. I can't even play NeoTokyo, it stutters a lot.

Notebook care is difficult and time by time ridiculous like this. It's only dust in the end. But i couldn't dare to open and clean it, since previous laptop died because of my cleansing and care workouts.

I clean my system about twice a year. Its up on a desk and no cats, dogs, kids or smoking in the room that its in. It also has dust filters on the outside that I clean off now and then when they look like they need to be cleaned.

I had a great vacuum for this that I could hook up in reverse which was really nice because in the winter it would be blowing warm air over the system when I cleaned it outside. But the Vacuum is broke and I'm not sure I can fix it though I'm gonna take it a part soon and see what I can do with it.

I cleaned out a family friends computer once. It had been sitting around for something like 5 years on the floor with cats, dogs, smoking and kids all in the room. It took me a while to get it all clean. I had to get in with qtips on the fans to get some of the stuff off them. It was nasty. I swear I heard one of the things purring like a Tribble. After that though the computer ran cooler and better.

Pressure blowers/compressors are not ideal due to the fact that they suck in small particles, and blast them onto your pc. This can cause electrostatic damage.
Vacuum cleaners can also create electrostatic buildup.

It's safer to clean your PC case with cans of compressed air. Use short bursts, and hold vertically to avoid liquid spray.

Also make sure to:

  • start by unplugging the power from your tower
  • ground yourself on something metal (and touching the ground) before opening your case.
  • hold fans in place while cleaning them with air. Otherwise they may spin too fast, and be damaged.
  • don't forget to clean GPU/CPU heatsinks under the fans

Ah, I din't know that the pressure blowers could do this, I'll use compressed air next time. Thank you for telling all this!

Also wear a helmet and only used Intel approved compressed air cans.

Anything else we're forgetting? uh, yes: don't try this at home kids.

You can, but it's not great since it doesn't get loads of the dust, and doesn't get into any of the corners or anything

As long as you don't find the remains of anything that was once living inside your PC, everything's alright.

Depends. If you have pets, or are in a dust heavy area, I'd say every 1-3 months. If not, anywhere from 3-12 months, depending on how long you'd like the computer to run. It won't affect the lifespan by a whole lot, assuming you don't let it get an inch of dust, but it will help prolong the life of your computer, as well as helping it run smoother and quieter.

If you want to be super careful, use compressed air, cotton swabs/cotton balls, and a cloth. If you don't mind taking a (rather small) risk, you can use a vacuum cleaner, which won't clean as well, but it is better than nothing.
