PS. Yep, I tried finishing earlier, but the last game (Coma 2) gave me a few backtrack-headaches. Sorry about that.. but have a joyous healthy New Year!

So... should this be again only counting games I have never started before?

Hmm, interesting idea. I just wanted to ask a couple more questions for clarification:
Sorry for all the questions btw, but seems like a fun idea.

The 3 extra rows can be used by anyone right, even if we haven't completed all the games in the top 24?
Yes.
Some games are a bit more vague in terms of what it means to beat it (ex: Kind Words, which is in your top 24), I guess we just ignore them?
Yes. The general rules that I apply to Monthly in a Month applies here: Has to have a clear campaign with an ending, No endless gameplay and no MP only games. The reason for this is because I would be stuck making judgment calls on whether playing X hours or seeing Y amount of content means you have "beaten" the game.
Should we only do games we never played. What if it was a game we were played in the past and have some progress, but never got to finishing?
Following the same rules as the other event; can't have play time which precedes the event. It is just easier this way.
If we were already currently in the middle of a game that fits the criteria, do they count or must they be games started from the date of this post?
Must be from this date onwards, sorry.
How do collection games work? Example could be Mega Man Legacy Collection or in my case Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove.
As per my other event, folks play the entire collection for it to count. If you have the time for it, go for it.
I noticed I had some sequels in my list, can we sort of use the prequel game as a replacement? For example, I have The Coma 2 in the first row of my list, but I haven't played The Coma 1. I guess the other argument could be to just play both games and then count the sequel. Another example is you have The Witcher 3 in your list, but maybe you want to play the Witcher 1.
No. This is an interesting question and one that I wasn't sure about at first. Generally, you should play a prequel before starting a game from a series, but it is not always needed. Witcher 3 can be played and enjoyed on its own, but you'll probably get more out of it from playing the first two beforehand. Now, my own example shows Blackwell Epiphany which is the last game in a 5 part series. Since it is a P&C, you should definitely play the first 4 before playing it. However, if I allow substitutions (which would be somewhat comparable in this case since the lowest rated game is at 89%), I would have to allow it for all games that exist in a series, regardless if they can be played independently or not. I would also have to allow the reverse, playing a sequel in place of a prequel and I rather not get into that.
To keep it simple, no subs within a series, sorry.

Btw, sorry I didn't check your other event, I guess I should have checked the rules there before asking my questions. Kind of feel bad I made you repeat stuff you've already explained before.
Thanks though, and your rationale of making things more simple to track is totally fair.

Don't worry. I only mentioned the other event because a few people here are familiar with it, and I wanted to make it clear that they both worked within the same framework, just different requirements. I don't expect everyone to know about it, so you were perfectly fine to ask those questions.

I managed to fit 32 games in one screenshot, can I scroll in blocks of 32? [slightly /s, contemplating in 24 blocks still unless said otherwise]
Game | Progress | Status | Thoughts |
---|---|---|---|
Zenge | 1/1 | Completed | A nice relaxing puzzle game |
Reventure | 101/101 | Completed | Interesting seeing all the different endings that can be done. |
Finding Paradise | 1/1 | Completed | I need to call my landlord to ask why it is raining in my apartment |
Scalak | 2/2 | Completed | Another nice relaxing puzzle game |
Higurashi 3 | 16/16 | Completed | That was... certainly an ending |
43 out of 48 games and 55 out of 72 games
Red X indicates I already have play time in it before the start of the event, Green O are for games I played for the event

Hacks.
Not even an hour in and you guys already give me a headache XD.
I'll allow it. I'll rewrite the rules a bit to make it more lax. I may have been a bit too strict with the original so I'll make it so that you'll always have options to pick from rather than being forced to play 5 particular games like you were.
Comment has been collapsed.
Whoops, deleted my original comment by accident. I will be selecting from this list:
Enigmatis 2, Escape Goat, Baba Is You, Deus Ex HR, Day of the Tentacle, Duke Nukem 3D, Fault - Milestone 2, Clannad
*Purple Box are part of an unplayed series. Red O are games I'd already started. Blue X are games I've already beaten
Game | Progress |
---|---|
Enigmatis 2: The Mists of Ravenwood | Beaten |
Escape Goat | Beaten |
Baba Is You | Playing |
Deus Ex: Human Revolution | Unplayed |
fault - milestone two side:above | Unplayed |
-or- Day of the Tentacle Remastered | Unplayed |
-or- Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition | Unplayed |
-or- Clannad | Unplayed |
Total Progress: | 2/5 Beaten so far |
EDIT:
Enigmatis 1&2 beaten. Weren't too bad; E1 was old-school HOG (over 40 hidden-object scenes, it was too much), but E2 was more like AM's typical syle HOGs with a balance of puzzles and HO scenes. I guess I have to play E3 as well now.
Playing Baba is You and Escape Goat:
Baba is You is quite difficult, as a lot of the puzzles aren't logical, but rather breaking logic to accomplish things. Other times things seem really inconsistent with what you can or can't do.
Escape Goat has floaty controls, and quite challenging already, mainly due to that. Not sure how big the game is, but not sure I'm gonna make it through.
EDIT:
Escape Goat beaten. I worked out why I was finding the game so hard to play - the biggest issue with the game is the more Hz you have, the faster the game runs! I changed to 60Hz from 144Hz, and suddenly I was able to play it normally.

This is my list, games with red slashes mean I've played them before, can you confirm if these are the games I have to play?
Linelight - 1st row
TY the Tasmanian Tiger - 2nd row
Day of the Tentacle Remastered - 3rd row
Escape Goat - 4th row
fault - milestone two side:above - 4th row
or I can pick any 5 games from the list below?
Linelight
TY the Tasmanian Tiger
Day of the Tentacle Remastered
Escape Goat
fault - milestone two side:above
Gravitas (This is a free game, not sure if it counts) - 4th row
Higurashi When They Cry Hou - Ch.2 Watanagashi - 5th row
Persona 4 Golden - 6th row
Comment has been collapsed.
You can play but not must play.
I just rewrote the rules a bit to make it a bit more flexible. It works like this:
1) First 6 rows (48 games), do you have more than 10 picks? If yes, you must pick 5 from that group (48 games). If no, scroll down 3 rows.
2) After scrolling down 3 more rows, do you have more than 10 picks? If yes, you must pick 5 from the that group (72 games). If no, scroll down 3 more rows.
I don't want you to feel like you have to play something. Being forced to play a video game is probably the worst feeling when it comes to gaming since it goes against the main reason we play games: to have fun! If you have 10 or more options, you have to pick 5 games from that group. I'm not going to tell you which 5 you have to play.

Gravitas (This is a free game, not sure if it counts) - 4th row
Free is fine so long as it has a story/campaign with a clear ending.

I like this idea! I am in! :D
It would be lovely if this became a regular thing, but I am afraid it might become a lot of work for you -- I mean, are you going to check all of them manually?
Another thought: is it easier for you to get screenshots with achievements at the end, or maybe just links to the achievement pages?
Let me check my possibilities... from my Top 48, these are currently "0h on record" or nearly so (I imagine games with a few minutes should be ok, but let me know):
So, if I understand the rules correctly, I can get 3 more rows? If so, from the next 24, I have untouched:
A fine selection! I will try to pick 5 of these later!
Cheers!

The easiest way to do it is to follow the format from my other event + the screenshot showing your sorted library.
Unless you started the game today, it cannot count towards the event, sorry.

Replying to myself, so hopefully I will not bother anyone. Just want to keep track of the games I finished so I can write them in the correct place later.
Interesting how all these games were very solid (well, except "The Crown of Leaves", which will probably be very solid once it is finished), but did not make to my "Top xx" lists. I guess it is expected -- games which get excellent review scores on Steam tend to please everybody, so these are not usually the games that really take chances. But I did enjoy them all, thank you for this great event!

I'm loving this idea for an event, but ooof.. I'm struggling to get a Top 5 list going. I seem to have played a good majority of my Top 104 games (yes, I've had to scroll that far down.. :c ). I just wanted to clarify a few things, in case I crossed off some that may have been eligible or whether I have to keep scrolling.
I know you mentioned no endless games / MP games, so those I've crossed out. You also said you don't want games that have been started prior to this event / have play time - does that include games that have only idle time for card drops but no achievements unlocked in them? Depending on your answer, I'm guessing games that have no achievements that have some idle time wouldn't count since there's no way to verify if I started them before or not.
Thanks!

I'm fine with idle time since I know a lot of folks here do it for cards. I assume most people are honest, but if someone submits nothing but games with no achievements with times that don't exactly match expected play time, I might get suspicious. You will need to show a screenshot showing that you completed the game though.
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay, thank you for clarifying!
I prefer playing games with achievements since I like hunting for them, which left most of my unplayed top games as the ones that didn't have any. Since card farming idle time is fine, that opened up a few extra games with achievements that I had crossed off, so that definitely helps!
I'll post the photos probably closer to the weekend. Thanks for hosting this. :D

Go to Library > Home on the steam client
Either make a new shelf or scroll down to the one at the bottom which should be set for "All Games"
There, you should see "Sort By" and a drop down which will default to "Alphabetical"
Click on the drop down and at the very bottom, you will see "Steam Review". Click it and it will sort by review (Highest to lowest) and show you the score.

I've never done one of these, do I need to take before screenshots for each game showing no time played before starting?
Top 48 unplayed:
Exa Punks
Half Life 2 Ep1
Machinarium
Tales of the Borderlands
Prey
Quell Memento (this has 1 minute play time I don't know if I can use it)
Deus Ex GOTY
The Hex
Into The Breach
Momodora
is the ones I'm considering. I'd also consider Quell Memento if that one is eligible.

No. I'll verify your submission but so long as you have not played your game before the event has started, you are fine. If you have play time related to idling for cards, I take that into consideration and is okay. I just don't want you to be half way through the game before the event started XD.
The easiest way to post once done is to follow the format from my other event + the screenshot showing your sorted library.

Already have Hades so I won't enter, but it's a neat idea. Thanks for prompting me to take a look at my library in a new way! Turns out I've beaten 15-ish of my top 24, which is way better than I expected. ("15-ish" because L4D2 keeps crashing on the final mission. Except last time I tried, when my asshole AI teammates refused to behave and let me die in the chopper while the pilot was waiting for them to get in!)

Sure, why not. Maybe this will actually make me... do stuff.
So many VNs, sequels and adventure games in that list... T.T
(And Euro Truck Simulator 2 for some reason...)
Anyway, these games look like safe non-trauma-inducing picks, so I'll go with them, if it's ok:
Helltaker
Linelight
Bit Blaster XL
Hook
Botanicula
They all have achievements and I fully intend to 100% them so if that's ok for a completion criteria I'd like to go with it. ^_^'
Edit 21/12:
Ok, done.
Helltaker
Linelight
Bit Blaster XL
Hook
Botanicula
Honestly, I ended up picking such short games that it kinda feels like I cheated. Only around 20 hours of total playtime between them... Y'know, I won't consider this challenge done until I do another, meatier game too. Mark of the Ninja is suddenly in 25-th place between Left 4 Dead 2 and Mount & Blade: Warband, so I'll do that. Brb, when I'm done.
Edit 30/12:
Ok, done with that too.
Mark of the Ninja
(And I fixed all the other links I had so they actually show my stats rather than the global achievement stats... Ops. ^_^' )

Nice idea! Might as well attempt it :)
(Note: Most of my games have idle time + i mostly play with steam offline which sometimes does and sometimes doesn’t track offline hours, so as additional proof i’ll take a screenshot when i finish each one)

Um ...?
Is it an event to play 5 of the top 24 games with high review scores?
I'm not sure, but I took a look at my place.
The green circle is the one that has finished playing.
Others are not touched / Android version has been played.
It seems that there are many such things.

Ok, looking at my games... My tops ones I have so many I have either beaten/completed or have played for barely anytime (ones with achievement numbers on image) lol. Very limited options.
My options are pretty much only:
Game | Status |
---|---|
A Short Hike | Beaten |
Smile for Me | . |
The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters | . |
I'm not smart enough for this game lol | |
Rakuen | . |
RIP playing games for a couple of hours here and there and not committing haha
At least they pretty much crossover with the other event :P
Edit: Oh looking at new rules I can now play all these games in the screenshot and even add a row. We'll see how it goes

I'll update this after I can post proper proof - picked games. I dipped into a lot of game for a few minutes, sometimes haven't even started just left it accidentally open in the menu, or only played the tutorial, those are all need to be left out. So had to scroll for a bit.
Also a question - what's up with games that are above the specifications of the current PC I have? Like I have A Hat in Time that I'm almost 100% sure I'll get ~10-20 fps just in the menu, and there will be surely other ones that will follow later.
Games | Status |
---|---|
Cube Escape: Paradox | Finished the free version/half as of 12th December. |
cancelled, needs prequels and it's a lot of P&C in short time | |
Rakuen | Unplayed |
Samsara Room | Finished! |
Eternal Senia | Finished! |
One Finger Death Punch | Finished! |

sigh You guys are driving me crazy! XD
I rewrote the rules so that so long as you have less than 10 picks, you can keep on adding rows in batches of 3 until you get more than 10 picks. My hope is that if you happen to have a game that you can't play yet, then it will still leave you with at least 9 other games to choose from. If it gets to a point where you can't play the majority of your picks then I might consider making adjustments then. Let me know if you reach that point and we'll address it then.

I found valid and working games for this month, so all is fine.
and if this continues, I think I just need to idle the too-heavy-games for 5 minutes to to disqualify them...
Surprisingly out of the first 48 I only found 1 game I'm pretty sure about it wouldn't work. Hopefully wouldn't be a too big issue anyway. (Technically more to worry as 2-3 RTS ones are in the next batch :D )

Actually, it has 3 slightly different endings for completing the last level on the Student, Master and Grandmaster difficulty map.
Definitely not for everyone. Grandmaster mode gets kinda... ridiculous. XD

Completed games:
Hexcells Infinite - achievements
Playing this reminded me of spending hours upon hours in Minesweeper in my teenage years, and the core concept is extremely clever. I will say the game got a little less fun by the end, but it was not long enough to seriously wear out its welcome. Additionally, I strongly appreciate the inclusion of night mode for the visuals!
Finding Paradise - achievement
This was my favorite of the crop, and the hardest to write about because it's hard to articulate what I expected going in and what drastically changed as I saw the story unfold.
I'll summarize by saying while A Bird Story did not particularly move me, this story from the same developer hit hard. (This may be a mild spoiler depending on how you perceive spoilers, so it's hidden) I have the strongest reaction not to stories of human tragedy or romance, but to stories of human dissatisfaction, the feeling that something in life is missing and out of reach. And right from the start, Finding Paradise conveys that feeling so precisely that it should resonate deeply with almost anyone.
My minor gripes are with the resolution as there's no way to get something between "small window" and "stretched-out full screen mode." But the rest of the game doesn't feel limited by the RPG Maker engine, and has some surprisingly detailed art assets and music. Additionally, I love meta-humor, but Finding Paradise is a bit thick with it so that might turn off other players.
I should play To The Moon soon-ish.
Smile for Me - achievements
Some of the ways Smile for Me subverts player expectations and traditional game mechanics, things as simple as standing too closely to a character as you converse with them, are hilarious. Getting the ball rolling with some of the initial adventure game puzzles was a bit hard, but once you get used to the characters, the puzzles become a bit easier to figure out. I don't know if all the humor was a hit for me, but I absolutely loved the Dr. Habit video segments.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered - achievements
As far as classic LucasArts adventure games go, Monkey Island has been my favorite so far, because of its great hint system even though most of the puzzles don't need a hint system. But even without the hint system, Day of the Tentacle is a pretty fun adventure with a good sweet spot in length and a colorful cast of characters. I enjoyed manipulating the same area in different time periods and seeing variations of the same character pop up. Some of the puzzles were tough to figure out, leading me to consult guides, but they get a bit more understandable as time goes on.
Bug Fables - achievements
Note on achievement timestamps: Sometimes achievements do not unlock properly, but subsequently unlock after restarting the game.
Note on play time: I spent some idle time in game to take advantage of the in-game bank. Actual play time is about 30-35 hours.
For me, the Paper Mario sequels beyond The Thousand-Year Door are still fine games, but I understand the desire for more traditional gameplay. And that's the potential of crowdfunding and indie development at its best: passionate individuals stepping in to fill the niche that has gone dormant. The gameplay mechanics in Bug Fables are surprisingly intricate and build on the Paper Mario formula in some clever ways, especially in combat where the possibilities are much more robust. The visuals are not a match for Nintendo's best work but are proficient in their own right especially considering the limitations of a small team with some IndieGogo funding. On the other hand, the soundtrack is superb top to bottom and worth considering for purchase (unfortunately not available on Steam).
Bug Fables did occasionally crash for me, which was unfortunate. My game actually crashed while saving near the very end, which freaked me out because I know there is an issue with possible save file corruption, but thankfully I only lost two minutes of progress.
As for this event being held more often, I would lean toward no because Monthly in a Month is a big event unto itself, and doing Awesome Games Only multiple times would have diminishing returns and get less manageable due to the criteria of what games to include. In any case, it's obviously up to your discretion how you want to proceed, and thank you for all the events so far!
My library (Red line indicates already played and/or ineligible; light blue indicates games completed for Awesome Games Only December 2020):

Hey all, its your local Zoidberg again and it is time to make the bank regret their decision on giving me credit :D.
The challenge is simple: Play and beat 5 out of the top 24 games (according to Steam reviews), starting today, that you currently own in one month.
The prize: 5x Hades
Note: This means I'm giving away five copies of the game and will have 5 winners.
Game length does not matter and I'm not looking for 100% achievement runs. So long as you play and beat 5 games, I'm happy. You can go easy mode and play a bunch of 1h games or go crazy and play 5 +30h games. So long as they are one of your top games, we are good. Also, price of the game does not matter. If the game is free, that is okay.
How to enter: Post a comment with a screenshot showing your steam library sorted by "Steam Review" (example below - Picture 1). Also include either screenshots/achievements showing that you fulfilled the criteria and I'll add you on Steam and give you the link. Feel free to share your thoughts on the games you've played, but it is not required.
FAQ:
What if have already played most or all of my top games?
First, congrats! :D
Second, screw you, you show off -.- jealous
Third, scroll down a row and take two screenshots. One showing the original top games in your library. The second showing the new row of games which include the ones you played for this event. (Example below - Picture 2)
How far down can I scroll? Can I scroll indefinitely? :D
-.-
I'm allowing 3 extra rows of games. That is 8 per row or 24 extra games for a total of 48. If you are still unable to find 5 games within that group, you can keep scrolling down with the condition that you have no more than 10 games to choose from. I.e. You can only go pass your top 48 if you have already played at least 38 your top games. Next three rows would put you at 72; you need to play at least 62 before going to the next 24 and so and so forth.
What about that other event "Monthly in a month"? Can one game count for both events?
I was on the fence about this one but the answer is yes. If you play a game that satisfies the conditions of this event and the other event (either the one that is currently running and the next edition which starts on Friday), then it can be applied to both. Just keep in mind that the other event doesn't start until the new HB Choice/Monthly launches, so if you play a game now with the intention of having it apply to both, you need to wait till after HB releases the new bundle on Friday. Otherwise, you could only apply it to the edition which is about to end this weekend.*
I want you guys to have fun. I don't need you guys to hate me for making you play 11 games this month. :p
Why 5/24?
24 since it is the most I could fit in a screenshot by putting the steam client on full screen. 5 seemed like a decent target.
Event ends on Jan 1st, 10pm EST. For all that is holy, do not wait till the last minute to submit your entry. I do not need to spend New Year's Day refreshing the thread to make sure I got everyone.
Good luck, have fun and stay safe.
P.S. Feel free to comment below your thoughts about the event and your answer to the poll.
