Weirdly enough I played a lot of otome games but I can only describe their romances as "alright" :x (except in The Confines of the Crown, in which there were some very weird / original things)

Nusantara and Cinderella Phenomenon are both free and have some high quality writing, so I recommend them. :)

I know about Cinderella Phenomenon and have heard good things about it (although I haven't played it yet, it's on my backlog). Never heard of Nusantara before. I'm usually not really into fantasy VNs, but the Indonesian influences look interesting and that big lizard in the banner looks cute. I'll look into it :)

It certainly sounds weird to say but I think the romance between BJ and Anya in Wolfenstein The New Order and now The New Colossus is the best in games, because you can tell how much the two characters care about each other.

I guess I'll just say Fang and Tiara from Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force because I can't think of any other examples that come even close to being "romantic" off the top of my head.
Initially they pretty much hate each other's guts- Tiara starts off as a complete stuck-up bitch who considers Fang to be just a dumb muscle who she can get to do all the dirty work for her and Fang starts off as a total asshole who, despite begrudging moments of heroism, mostly cares only about himself and finds Tiara's attitude intolerable. They get better and warm up to each other over time to the point where Fang goes into full Screw Destiny mode in order to save her when things go really south.
(I guess it also helps that Tiara is such a masochist that any time Fang badmouths her to her face she gets turned on and that usually ends up awkwardly defusing whatever argument they were in at the time. XD )

I was thinking lately about writing and narratives in games and I took the time to appreciate one aspect that, when done well, can be awesome. In this thread, I would like anyone interested to pick a romance or two that you found particularly moving or well-done.
For me, the longstanding frontrunner as been the romance between Red and the Boxer from Transistor. While I would 100% smooch Logan Cunningham (the Boxer's voice actor) anyway, the writing and his performance is just so good and tender in a way I haven't seen in games very often. I spent the game calling his character 'Sword Boyfriend' for a reason. Red's side of the romance is more understated and expressed through different actions she takes in the game, and the credits sequence shows how much she loves and cares for him, too.
A more recent contender is out to battle them for the top spot, though. I can't talk a lot about it, though, because it's a little spoilers and it's tied up heavily in the mystery of the game, but the central romance in the House in Fata Morgana is so so so so so good. It's spectacularly crafted, and incredible, and I cried so much, and please please please play this game so I can talk to more people about it it's so fuckin good.
So, SteamGifts, what about you? What romances in games locked your heart in a vice grip and would not let go?
