Eh, yes and no. I am experimenting, but only to find something that still lets many people through, yet maybe finding someone who actually plays their wins. So far out of all my drops to the giveback/love/peace threads and my two milestone celebration topics in the past months, ONE game was actually played (and not just card-farmed). In total.
The only exception in this one's case is that I am pretty much inviting people who just card-farm their wins to participate. For no real reason beyond that I just felt like that in that minute.
Still, this is nothing large-scale, I am just continuously trying to find a working recipe for the few giveaways I will make for those threads, before I run out of keys finally.

Do you prefer using SGTools for this? I presume you are aware of some dedicated groups for the games you care about getting played - Actually Playing (though I see that is closed at the moment), and Playing Appreciated

I considered Playing Appreciated, then I saw their public statistics. I'd rather keep on experimenting myself than joining a group that struggles with a 33% or worse unplayed rate and constant member kicking because of that. I fear that by the time they actually find the formula to bump play rate up beyond 90% without shrinking under a hundred people, I may either find my own formula with SGT or run out of keys, rendering the whole issue moot.

I know the feeling. I believe in Playing Appreciated however more then these rules.
The problem it seens, on my view, is the sheer rate of pure non-intentional players and of 'somedayers'- that is ''i want this game, only theres [insert dozens here] ahead of it on my backlog and here is a chance of me wining it now'.
The first group is helpless. No Blaeo or playing appreciated would help and are the ones kicked from the group.
The second group is a mixed bag. Perhaps something could shift behaviour and this is where my hopes go with Playing Appreciated- since i got into the group (+now i tatically look at my backlog) my playing order and priority changed, i have been playing more games overall and now thinking way more about when/how soon i want something before buying/entering GA.
Heck, id totally dig stellaris and evolved inc for example-but i have been avoiding any of these gas because i know it will be a long long time for me to touch stategy again.
Thats a new development. My gaming, browsing and gifting have been changing.
What helped was both Blaeos in-your-face stats (i tought i knew my worst nightmare. Now my bad dreams all involve my backlog just sliently staring at me) and PAs pitch + mindset.
Rules barrier seem less effective on my view for simple reasons:
-no rules can take into account someones backlog order, available gaming time and such. Where a 'play in a month' self imposed rule manually reinforced can work
-My guess the number of people who care and play is bigger but steam inflation occurs: that is, all the past bundle games, wins and such that are probably not playable in a realistic time (often not in a lifetime) affect the stats. When i got on SG i entered GAs by curiosity or chance that i regret/wouldn't have entered today. Also back then my library was a third of what it is now. Bundles, steam sales and gifts- its a unbelieavable race that is unwinablle...
-...and the rules take into account overall stats
-They wont/don't help change behaviour: the never-player will click link, not pass, close and forget. Chances are he won't even realize why he couldn't enter that and other gas- and chances are he won't care either.
Finally but not least PA have a dual edge deal: on the good, its kinda of a new chance for playing wins; It considers the wins on the group, so both those with little played steam overall and those with many untouched wins can look at it as a chance to start changing.
This same leeway however is what fails to bar those who don't care at all.
Idn what could improve. But i chip with PA and for more groups/proposals like that. There will always be rule breakers being kicked tought, thats unavoidable i guess.

With these rules, I am looking for people who may appreciate the giveaway itself and feel inclined to play on their own accord. With BLAEO and PlayAppr, the problem is that they try to persuade people to play new games, but this also means that the player is essentially forced to grind up the backlog, which is the total opposite of the essence of video games; they stop playing for fun and start playing for a statistic. I was like that, then I realised how burnt out I felt from gaming. Then just decided to play whatever and now I am still burning through my backlog, but only when I feel like it.
This is what I try to avoid here. I am not putting pressure on winners at all, but I try to go for the people who may just feel to show appreciation by playing the game on their own accord.

Makes perfect sense, i share many of the same feelings. My first reaction was 'how do i care for statistics?'- heck im even someone who couldn't care less about achievements for example. Not because of playing appreciated (i enter what i really wanna play) but BLAEO i gave a second shot to some wins i didn't liked at first- and enjoyed it.
But thats probably a very specific case of bad judgment or a lesson learned in giving games more time to sink.
Maybe some rules will help, worth a shot- but damm, try to look less at statics because they're just depressing.
I remenber the topic coming up at a GDC talk. It broke my heart seing devs talking about how little owners vs completed (or even played) compared- if we feel odd about GAs not playing imagine the guys who made the games. Seems like this is a much broader problem regarding not only the sheer size of the gaming market but also our increasingly shorter attention spam and more time competition - it was easier having time to game before social networks to fiddle daily...

Dang can't enter most of these...not sure what part of the hugely long rule I'm failing. :(

Last update
Time to pass onto something else... One more time, thanks to everyone ! It has been a great pleasure to update this thread for 3 years, with the almost 1500 GAs you people offered, and to see so often cool bumps, nice gifs, and kind words. See you soon somewhere on SG !

Update August 2019
This thread is 3 years old. I guess it is time for it to shut down :-)
The global welcome to it was unexpected. In fact I was just willing to make a bunch of GAs and wrote the thing on the fly... and boom, crazy people started giving away games, so much that we are still there 3 years later. I'm very grateful to the community. In particular, I want to thank everyone who posted a GA or bumped the thread (even with cool pictures !). SG is really one of the best places on the internet...
Of course, the idea of peace still needs support, but SG discussions probably also need new events and opportunities to give games away. Anyway, I added some GAs ending last day of this month. I'll stop updating the thread when these GA will be over.
Love you all !
Everybody will agree, human world is having a big crisis. As a species, we went from cave age to nuclear knowledge and space exploration, but when it comes to live together peacefully, we didn't grow that much. World is still full of people who want to see other people dead for various reasons, and most of the time without having met or spoken once with their object of hate. Some nations, most of the time driven by the wills of a few hundred people, are fighting against others because they think of their borders as more valuable than whole mankind. Everywhere or so, the world is full of people who think they own the Truth, with a big T, and that they are entitled to force others on their beliefs.
Why am I talking of such obvious things ? Because SG is about gifting and sharing love of gaming with random strangers from everywhere on Earth. It's a successful attempt to create relations between people who probably wouldn't have met another way. So, whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever religion (or none) you believe in, if you like to think of yourself as a citizen of Earth, if you feel that differences should be dealt with by tolerance, talking and mutual understanding, if you seek for peace between people... have a few giveaways :)
If someone wants to contribute a GA, please reply to the first post below and I'll add it.Comment has been collapsed.
