Since 2020, did you want or get to upgrade your computer hardware?
I would love to build me a pc for the first time, but this is such a bad time to build your own pc. Can't really find the parts in my budget and I don't want to overpay just because the market is crazy right now. So for now I'll have to stick to gaming through GeforceNow and hope prices get a little more normal soon.

I know I didn't want to pay over MSRP for anything other than my power supply since that's important. If couldn't get what I wanted before the new year, I too would have waited this out.

I tend to keep my CPU+mobo for 5-8 years and GPUs for half that time. If I didn't have a 1440p monitor I would've gone with a cheaper GPU, but I splurged for once, as I tend to go for $100-$200 GPUs.
Its insane to me how even the 1060's price has increased compared to a few years ago.

I wanted to upgrade a CPU and probably RAM (I've currently got Ryzen 1600x and 16 GB RAM 2400 MHz) - and motherboard, of course, but ended up deciding that I'm absolutely fine as it is, my specs are still perfectly suitable for 1080p gaming and will be for some more time (I've also got RTX 2070). I'm going to spend much less and get Oculus Quest 2 instead - well, as soon as it's back in stock on Amazon for $300 + ~$40 for shipment (I mean, sure, it's available in Russian stores as well, but here it costs almost $600).

I too wouldn't upgrade if I had your system. I've been tempted to get into VR, but the room where I'd play it is too confined for room scale so I wouldn't be able to get the most out of it. Enjoy it! I'm sticking with flat screen 1440p gaming for quite a while.

I'm still running an old 4 core CPU and Geforce 1060 6GB. Can't afford to upgrade.
Thankfully I have a decent SSD and 16GB of RAM which helps make it not feel too dated.

That's been my rig for years too. Amazing the difference an SSD and 16GB can make - Keep chugging along!

I initially had planned to buy a new PC around September, but I'll delay it at least till December.
I would be able to get what I want (thanks to my brother switching jobs ;D), but it would still be overpriced. As my current system is still good enough to last at least another year, I'm in no hurry to spend for a new system and monitor.

Bought whole PC based on 5900x, unfortunately also bought 1440p monitor but... can not buy and will not buy for a long time new graphic card. Still i am on GTX 970 and use my old 1080p monitor :). Market situations is awful and I just refuse to pay stupid price only to get much worse performance per fps than old cards which was not so great priced like 2xxx series (before super versions) and especially refuse to give money to scalpers and other 'clever' ppl ;).
And about Nvidia vs AMD. Too be honest would buy 3080 or 6800xt. Right now even other cards like 6800, 6700XT, 3700, 3600ti it they would be on MSRP (or close enought to MSRP) :). This card generation from nvidia and AMD are both good but not market situation and general crypto situation which disrupt many markets + covid.

I should upgrade soon, but I'm going to wait for all the craziness to die down. I'm also still using a 3570K with 8GB of RAM. I'll probably just upgrade the CPU, motherboard, and RAM towards the end of this year or maybe wait till 2022. I'll keep the GTX 980 for now since it does what I need it to, but I would like to switch to 1440p by the end of 2022 or 2023 (depends on GPU pricing and monitor quality). I really hope monitor technology improves by then. An OLED would be awesome, but I've been waiting for at least 6 or 7 years already.

I didnt hold my breath for DDR5 since SK Hynix's first prototype didnt get much higher than DDR4 max speeds and not near the DDR5 max speeds. Maybe some other company will swoop in and be first to consumer market. Hopefully it won't be more expensive than DDR4.
I highly recommend 1440p for a monitor - Its a great sweet spot for 27" with normal use on a desk, and pushes more frames than many 4K monitors. OLED monitors still seem really pricey, but if latency isnt a huge deal then maybe a small OLED TV will do for you.

I bumped up to a TR2 2950X about a year-and-a-half ago. That proc costs more now than what it did when I bought it, even though there is a slightly newer gen out right now. I could actually make money off of it used (but I don't want to...it's awesome and I'm keeping it 😁). Still running a 1070ti, which I had originally planned to upgrade this year, but GPU prices are just too stupid. Not doing it.
We desperately need for GPU companies to put buy limits on things (same for resellers). Warranties invalid for anything sold secondhand within the first six months. Squash the vultures creating sky-high prices in the secondhand market by mass-purchasing all of the inventory as soon as it drops. Only system builders should be allowed to mass-purchase.

it's crazy to me that people have the money to do that kind of market manipulation.
But then again it's also crazy to me that the mob is still wasting time in the drugs market when there is so much money to be made in hardware and you don't kill your customers so the potential is infinite :P

Well looks like I'm in the majority. I badly need an upgrade in hardware but I haven't been working steadily in just over a year so I can't afford it right now.
I'm picking up shifts here and there from buddies who work in restaurants that have pivoted to food delivery so I'm getting by but I have no extra money to spend on the kind of hardware I wanted.
It's very useful to read of others experience and opinions with recent hardware though. When I can pull the trigger on getting parts to build my new rig, I won't have a lot of time to research things. Like you say, the market moves fast

I have a few buddies who work small kitchens that had regulars asking if they would do take away since we're still in semi lockdown;
But even with regulars, they are struggling staying afloat with just that so they started using delivery services but now they have too many orders for a small crew so I have been picking up shifts with three restaurants in the past couple of weeks.
It doesn't pay much but it's good to be in the kitchen again and I have been working bigger places for the past 10 years so it's nice to be working in a tight crew where you are responsible for a dish from start to finish. They are putting a lot of care into it and it'd be a shame to see these small bistros go.
Now if the government could start vaccinating people other than politicians, and old people, maybe we could get back to business.
How about you? You've been staying busy, no?

I have a Macbook. No PC. Really want one but it's not a smart move to buy parts rn.

I managed to get a RTX 3080.
Damn! Nice!
I'm still rocking my trusty i5 6600K and a used 1080Ti I managed to pick up a little over a year ago at a huge discount.
One of my monitors died this past year and I'm holding off on a replacement - I feel like I should get something better than the 7+ year old monitor that I had, but I'm not sure what, and everything is so expensive.

Yeah, part of my delay is that I don't know what to get. I feel like HDR is the new standard, like it currently is with TVs, but it seems like such a crapshoot on the PC monitor side. I feel like anything I get should have HDR and Variable Refresh Rate like G-Sync of FreeSync, but then it gets expensive. And that's before you get into the whole IPS vs VA vs TN panel technology thing...
What did you guys go with?

She got herself a 27" LG 27GL83A-B (it's a mouthful!) for about half the Amazon price tag.
I haven't seen it or tested it myself yet since traveling is still a problem (2021, you suck too!) but she's been very happy with it. She uses it for office work, photo editing, Netflix and ofc gaming.
Even though she's not a hardcore gamer, we've been playing together and she says she can get a very sharp picture even with games that move a lot, which was a problem with her previous screen. It's blurry when it's supposed to be and not any other time.
Colors look amazing despite some difficulties calibrating the contrast at first.

December 2018 for me. Bought an RTX 2080 and 32GB of RAM, so there is nothing out there I can't play at decent settings. With the size of my backlog, it will be years before I'll be worried about upgrades.
Although, I did technically upgrade in 2020 since I added a 2nd SSD over the summer.

For PC hardware in 2020, we had high profile launches of:
Intel's 10000 series CPUs
AMD's Ryzen 5000 series CPUs
Nvidia's RTX 3000 series GPUs
AMD's Radeon 6000 series GPUs
At the start of this year, we also had:
More from Nvidia's RTX 3000 series GPUs
More from AMD's Radeon 6000 series GPUs
A reviewer break the review embargo on an Intel 11000 series CPU
There were some other hardware launches as well, and there will be more to come this year. Feel free to discuss those here too :)
I thought I'd make a post & poll about them, as I haven't seen other posts here about this (if I missed them, sorry).
Many of these have been paper launches and selling out quickly because of holidays, pandemic increasing demand, and some scalpers (though analysts only estimated it at ~5% of NVIDIAs Q3 consumer GPU sales).
Hopefully stock will get somewhat better as the year progresses, though there's an issue with not enough silicon in general being manufactured to keep up with increased demand.
I am the kind of person who only learns about new hardware when I'm wanting to upgrade major components, and the winter of 2020 was my time to research in preparation of upgrading my 3570K CPU and RTX 1060 GPU and finally replacing them with something newer.
Online retailers were hit and miss for me on getting the latest hardware. I got an AMD 5600X CPU from Best Buy, but not GPUs online despite trying multiple drops for multiple sites. So I went to an actual hardware retail store (Microcenter) two different times waiting in line before they opened, and I managed to get a RTX 3080.
Please enjoy these two giveaways that reflect this climate.
