I'm looking for games you can play while doing other things - such as chatting / reading / learning things you have to learn

Any games especially good for that?

To clarify - I mean things like turn based games where you can switch back and forth between turns.
Or things that don't require alot of focus / skill / brain power to operate.

Some games as suggested by you guys, so far:

  • F.T.L
  • Terraria
  • Binding of Isaac
  • Hero Academy
  • Dungeons of Dreadmore

I do have a second screen, but I need games that don't consume all your attention.

A game requires you to look at it and focus on what's happening so that automatically means you can't read something else and game at the same time and because of that also eliminates learning...which leaves chatting only...and honestly you can do that with just about any game.

It'd be better to run some show or something at low volume off to the side somewhere instead of looking for a game to try and relieve some of the boredom.

The only thing I can think of that breaks what I've said above is running an isometric ARPG with god mode/invulnerability cheats but even there you'll want to focus fully on the screen occasionally for special scenes or to find out what loot you've scored one your inventory ends up full.

Or "playing" FIFA by having 2 COM opponents square off against each other.

Well I meant stuff that you can easily pause and not get too involved with. Maybe things like turn based stuff or very light story wise you don't have to focus.

Lots of MMO's are like that. I've played Guild Wars 2 and APB Reloaded while doing some other stuff.

Not a huge fan of MMOs but mm..perhaps. Is APB any fun?

Definately not APB. great game but think of it as an online free roaming GTA. You can't leaving during missions and you have to be in-game to "accept" missions.

Its really nothing like GTA. GTA has much better story and level design. I wouldnt compare it to GTA anyway as the game play is radically different, for GTA just get GTA.
Main reason I'm mentioning APB is for the fun to be had outside of missions. As a criminal you can drive around with one hand and mug people, steal stores and such while still being in an online world surrounded with other players.

The Binding of Isaac, Hero Academy, Borderlands (if you know or don't care about the context or the story), Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed, Dungeons of Dredmor, Serious Sam 3, Counter Strike (whichever you like, specialy in DM) and VVVVVV. That's all I can remember for now.

X series, maybe? Switch to autopilot (without SETA if you're out for longer) and let your factories earn money for you while you're doing your homework.

Terraria isn't bad for multitasking. Most of the time I was playing, I was also looking up items and whatnot. Unless you get a Blood moon or something... Other than that, any game you can pause is good too

Civilization games are great for it, traditional turn based RPGs might work, The X-Com games are great as well. really depends on your personal preference

Civ indeed, the late game tends to load slower to process the AI turns, so its a good game to do somehing else, i would even say that you SHOULD do something else.

I guess Hearthstone's a hot contender these days. At least chatting works fine, learning probably won't.

Me too, heh. Sucks that EU and US are separate, but that's always been the case with Blizz stuff.

Apart from that, maybe Frozen Synapse, Zen Bound 2, Obulis. Plenty more I can think of for short bursts, but nothing that wouldn't draw on your attention too much.

Evident +1
Been playing MTG for almost 12 years, so i like HS. But comparing to magic, hearthstone is poor and rudimental. I guess it gets the job done for "free".
Playing MTGOnline would be an option, but it gets expensive, atleast at start.

Turns in civ 5 seems to be quicker than before, but i can guarantee that in civ III after the militar tradition technology is researched, If the war starts, it literally takes like half hour per turn, you can speed things by pressing shift, but it still takes a while.

^That. Great game and also great for multitasking, esp. if you don't mind grinding. Set up the level for 5 minutes, then look over occasionally to watch the pretty lights and upgrade your team.

It's not a Steam game, but Minecraft's good for this. Especially on creative, if you're building something big. I've been laying floor slabs for days now while I watch Netflix.

Heartstone - FTL - X-COM - MechWarrior Online (as matches are short and fun as hell) - Frozen Synapse...

Pretty much anything turn based, or that requires little time. Personally i do short bursts of online games, turn based strategy (Civ V/shogun being a prime example) or else, depending on the situation at hand. (if you're studying, look for something that doesn't require too much concentration and can be finished quickly, for example).

Also i tend to spectate on LoL/DotA matches from time to time, using sound cues so as to know whether or not they're just farming or in the middle of a teamfight. I tried doing the same on Starcraft 2, but it's a bit more difficult.
