Immortality.

Positive effects: live forever.

Negative effects: live forever.

There's many downsides to immortality other than the fact that you live forever.

yep, like caught an incurable disease... you have 33 types of cancer, but you are inmortal... good luck with that (and no, you are not Wade wilson)

Even more interesting is the situation in which you are immortal, but the cancer is the only thing that remains of you. (And yup, our lab uses these cells in research. Science is awesome.)

"Living forever" is a downside, it's basically on top of the chain reaction and i stated that because i was too lazy to mention anything else. People could get bored and wish for death or to rest in piece eventually. Plus it's already a punishment, seeing your friends, loved ones and relatives vanish, possibly see the end of your family root and have no way to fix that.

I only consider immortality good if you ever plan to see the outcome of humankind in the future, and to what would happen to us in the end, aren't you curious when you think about stuff like that? I am, and i would like to see it, even if i had to endure alot of negative effects. Like being left in the void when everything goes poof.

Excellent point.

I have this story in my head about these immortals that live as long as they want.

They can kill themselves at any time, but most of them decide to live pretty long.

They can have relationships and families, it's pretty cool, but it would be a better form of basic "immortality".

After you have lived for centuries, even millennia, what is the life of mortal? But a fleeting heartbeat to you. The first couple of centuries would be hard, but grieving will soon lessen each time. The only downside would be stuck in an era where it feels like things have stagnated, you'll soon be bored. One would assume then many attempts at committing suicide would stem forth, then hopeless bouts of depression will worse, but eventually something worthwhile was come long, maybe a lifecycle of a star or the discovery of some new race and then you have the next eon(sp?) with something to keep yourself busy. Looking back on it a century of depression would feel but a week or two.

If you contract a disease your body will develop anitbodies, for those that dont and your health suffers you cant die, so you have something to work towards, failing that you'll become the universe's biggest walking biotreat. Unless you wanna look at immortality like Cpt. Jack Harkness :3

being left in the void when everything goes poof

Reminded me of this:
"Imagine a steel sphere the size of the galaxy. Imagine that every trillion years, a fly lands on it and flies away again. When the steel sphere has eroded away from the friction, infinity will not even have begun."

I think the better decision, would to be able to choose when you die. Hence, nullifying the Negative effect.

True, true... never thought of that actually. I did think of reencarnation, rebirth, spirit possession (change bodies with someone to avoid death untill there was no vessel left), so many things to think about....

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, I like that Spirit Possession idea.

Though it would suck to not ever be in your own body again, But it would be pretty fun to be in other's. :P

What would be cool is if you combined the 2, Pick when you die (In this case, your main body), but able to have Spirit Possession, and when you do that, your body just goes dormant wherever you left it (or you instead switch bodies with the person). The negative would be that there is a cooldown between being able to switch back (Say 1 week of being stuck in the person?).

I was mostly considering spirit possession as a power that would work as long as there was a living being next to us to control by ourselves. Basically like a virus, takes over the host and controls it, only way to stop it would be having no vessel to take control of. That way, a person would be immortal since it could take control of pretty much anything that moved.

On top of that, would be mad fun to control somebody elses body just for the heck of it... xD

Sort of like the movie Fallen, although there the guy could also hop body to body through means of touch, but when he died he could possess someone again as long as they were within a certain range

Immortality.

I mean come on, who wouldn't want it?

Actually, there are a lot of downsides to that, so I'm going with 'magic'.

Not Harry Potter shit, but like actual fireballs and lightning and shit. Standard Elder Scrolls stuff.

How about space-time manipulation? You could basically make fire pop into somebody and see their insides burn from within. Oh and you'd be able to portal around.

Mixing those is interesting. You move twice as fast as normal, but appear to move at normal speed, so you have to stop and wait for your image to catch up with you before attempting to cross the road (or cars hit you because they won't see you).

Teleportation, pretty much what Gokus "Instant Transmission" is(But i don't need to sense energy, i need to picture the place i want to to go to in my head).. NEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD

Downside? Depending on the distance i travel, my life is shortened. Don't know by how much on what distance, that's something the godlike being that grants me the power has to decide.

You wouldn't want to spam it, you would have to have a good reason to use it.

Power of granting own wishes.

Pretty self explanatory.

Downsides? Well if I, for example wish for lots of moneys, it can cause an economic collapse, so I can only wish for small wishes to not make too big of an impact on other people.

Simple It would be To Be Able to Exist Outside Of Space And Time.
so I would live forever and be able to move instantly anywhere in space and time.
the downsides is never being able to tell anyone bout the future and since i dont age i couldnt realy be with anyone due to the space time collision issues that could screw up everything
