<3 Criminal Minds. I highly recommend if you don't mind a darker, more morbid crime show (compared to the likes of, say, NCIS).

The Wire

/thread

Wait, I just read your description. Hrm...watching the Wire is like reading Charles Dickens if he got drunk with Mike Davis, Charles Bukowski and Sinclair Lewis then told the story to Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.

So with that in mind...the Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes and Edward Hardwicke as Watson
Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot starring David Suchet
Foyle's War
Broadchurch season 1 is quite good, haven't seen season 2 yet.

+1 for Hercule Poirot. You could also try Miss Marple.

As for Sherlock Holmes, I've heard good things about it, but have never seen it.

In my humble opinion that is the best version, but the versions with Peter Cushing (better known as Grand Moff Tarkin) and the classic Basil Rathbone series are good too. Brett just embodies Holmes so well, and he and Hardwicke complement each other wonderfully, rather like Poirot and Japp/Hastings. Unfortunately there is no counterpart of the estimable Miss Lemon:)

You should check the Soviet version of Sherlock Holmes. Soviet viewers were fond of heartful and sympathetic version of Holmes, and many foreign reviews praise this adaptation's Watson as one of the best.

Bones

It's writer is an actual forensic anthropologist, the subplots can be goofy at times but the main investigative part is brilliant imo.

I loved Fargo, easily my favorite new show.

TotL I have read good things about, that's another netflix queue item I need to watch. Instead I keep re-watching other series.

I'm gonna miss those characters, but season 2 might have Nick Offerman so...maybe that will make up for their loss.

probably more crime drama than crime procedural but enjoyed watching ... The Fall, Secrets and Lies (the show 2013), The Killing, Flashpoint (was a little cheesy and episodic, but still enjoyed it.)

I think these are all on Netflix.

Guys, he did not ask for a series which is in any way crime related, but specifically for procedurals for "casual fun".Dexter, Fargo, Sherlock, The Fall, The Shield, The Wire, True Detective - all great shows, but not procedurals and surely no "casual fun"!

That being said, here my recommendations:

-Castle
-The Mentalist
-White Collar

To be honest, I had to look up the definition of "crime procedural" and really it depends on whether OP is looking for procedural drama or police procedurals. Based on the first two comments and their respective replies, it didn't seem like the strict definition of the term was being enforced.

I'd still recommend Fargo which, at ten episodes, is neither overly complex nor a large time investment.

Columbo...best procedural show EVER. Something less hard-core and more casual, which also focuses on the characters' lives, not just their work: Castle. Best part about it: Nathan Fillion.

Luther. Because sticking Idris Elba in a British crime drama proved to be an excellent idea.

Speaking of British crime drama: Inspector Morse is a timeless classic.

And I have a bit of a soft spot for Cold Case., mainly because the flashback to the time of the crime usually do a good job at catching the spirit of the time period.
