So I've heard that when you get the game/redeem a key/whatever, you also get a copy to give away. Is that true?

It depends on which copy you receive. The first copy, when activated, gives two copies in the persons inventory. These two copies, once activated then spawn one copy of the game. The person who then activates this copy will not receive any copies, thus meaning there are five in total.

That was true of the giveaway copies. Does the same happen when you buy from the Steam store?

Yes it works with newly purchased copies as well. Two friends bought it last week and got giveaway copies.
