I don't think that's important. My name is Soren and it is very unusual in Australia (it's an old Scandinavian name). It has its negatives, like needing to be repeated when speaking to strangers, but overall it has been positive to have an unusual name.
Having said that, I don't have any suggestions for you, although I think it is sensible to be traditional in the sense of giving your wife's opinion more weight in the consideration than an internet poll. ;-P
(I'm only teasing! I know you're discussing this with your wife)
Congratulations!

Thanks! :-D
Does that mean I have to start pronouncing it correctly too?
(instead of the Anglo-Aussie version that rhymes with warren - "Rally Swedish", perhaps? Hahaha!)
Also, at the risk of upsetting you, I'm afraid that I must inform you that my parents heard of the name via Søren Kierkegaard, so I probably need the Danish line not the Swedish dots.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh no, not at all. Tack så mycket! :-)
My ex-girlfriend worked with a Swedish girl who used to tell me I should use the dots every time I saw her. :-D
Am I correct in thinking that in the Swedish (and Danish, I suppose) pronunciation, the sound of the first part of Sören is more like rhyming with bird or burn?
I only first heard the term "Rally English" a couple of days ago (on this site) to describe the Finnish way of speaking English using their standard sounds. I was hoping that you might appreciate my attempted humour that Soren rhyming with warren, as people say here, is Rally Swedish, for the way English speakers (mis)pronounce the Swedish language.

Depends on what you're trying to achieve. I just use a fake name when ordering a takeaway pizza over the phone because otherwise I have to repeat it a couple of times and then when I arrive to try to take delivery, I have to conduct an investigation to figure out what name they actually used. It's not that bad when meeting people, but I do generally have to repeat it. It's sometimes confused with the Serbian name Zoran, as there are a few people here from the former Yugoslavia. At least that's not a potentially life-threatening situation anymore like it was in the 1990s (Croatians wanting to kill me when they thought I was Serbian).

It's good to hear you survived the Croatians. I hope the threatening situation didn't last long time. Is not nice to bring the war to new place like that.
I'm lucky to have the name Stefan, which would only get few different spellings but pronounce the same or close to same everywhere.

I totally second that. A classic name is timeless and your kid will never hate you for his name, even if it's maybe a bit boring. ;)
As for suggestions, well, no idea. It would depend on where you live. What's perfectly fine for one country would be insane for another.
Lastly, CONGRATS on your first child. It was scary when I became a parent myself, but then it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. I hope you'll feel the same! :)

I agree with Alegarsion on Alexander.
"The name Alexander is derived from the Greek Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros), meaning "Defender of the people" or "Defending men" and also, "Protector of men""
If I have to pick another: Michael.
"Michael /ˈmaɪkəl/ is a male given name that comes from Hebrew: מִיכָאֵל / מיכאל (Mīkhāʼēl, pronounced [miχaˈʔel]), derived from the question מי כאל mī kāʼēl, meaning "Who is like God?"."

Thanks for a very complete suggestions bro, we will keep it.

As someone who happens to be called Michael, who loves studying Biblical text and who has also worked as a translator, I have to say I find the standard translation "Who is like God?" to be slightly misleading :D
It's accurate as a very direct translation, but the best English translation to capture the real meaning would probably be "What is God like?"
I love my name :)

That's interesting, thank you. I just copy-pasted the info from wikipedia XD

Congratulations! May he live long and prosper.
As for the name:
I saw you're from Indonesia. Looked over some Indonesian names and found one: Berkah. It means "God's gift" and I think it is fitting.
Also, my name (Bogdan) has the same meaning but comes from Slavic languages.
And thank you for being so generous! Have a great day!

Congratulations on your first son! :D
I'm completely clueless about Indo names but in our culture(Greek) it's tradition to name the kid after one of the grandparents as a way of honoring them. I was named after my mother's father while my brother was named after our father's grandfather(we skip the father on his request :P )

We like some Japanese name, but any name would be considered ...but we wants to mix Indonesian name and any foreign names. :)

I hope everything goes well with the delivery and after.
I'm sure you've heard that the first month (the first two weeks, especially) are rough. It's all needy, needy, needy, and the only thank you that you receive is silence. But once you hit around the 1-2 month mark and you get that first smile, it'll melt your heart. When when they start hugging back and saying "I love you", it's the best feeling in the world. It makes all the bad memories disappear in that instant.
I have two little boys, and though they piss me off to no end, I wouldn't trade them for the world <3

Hi, I see from your steam profile that you're from Jakarta, like my wife, and that brings me good memories of when we were looking for a name for our first daughter at 7th month of pregnancy :)
About the name, if you're Muslim, maybe I can suggest Raihan Naeem which means Heavens' Flower Blessing.
Many congratulations and best wishes! :D
