I just saw that they're coming out with The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit on June 26th, which is supposed to be a free demo / prequel / teaser to Life is Strange 2. Some choices and actions will carry over to the game.

Do note that it does incorporate Denuvo Anti-tamper, so don't even think about pirating this free demo!

Absolutely!
It's one of my favorite games ever!
No, for I am a heartless monster.
No, for I am a potato, and thus incapable of feeling emotions such as love.

Isn't Denuvo or any other DRM a reason that some people pirate games? So they don't have to deal with DRMs?

Yes, but I am very amused by the idea that someone thought DRM is necessary for a free demo, or that people would try to pirate a free demo. Putting DRM on a free demo seems like such an asinine thing to do, and it wouldn't surprise me if some people see "Protected by Denuvo" and decide not to download it because of that.

By protecting a free demo with DRM, they're actively creating a reason and market for people to want to pirate a free product.

Yeah, the first thing I thought was how pointless and stupid is having drm on a free demo. That just sounds absurd.

Thinking about it some more, I can come up with two guesses for why they might have done it. They might be afraid someone could look at files from the demo (if they weren't protected) and try to use that to figure out how to remove protection from the full game when it comes. Or maybe they just used the same system that they're using for the full game in the demo, and were too lazy to take the drm out. Why bother to remove something like that for something they aren't even getting paid for?

If neither of those are the cause then I don't understand. I would also think it would cost them something to have the protection in the demo because it's a separate product than the main game. So it sounds like they'd lose money over that. If that is the case, then even my second guess would be a dumb reason because it would cost them money to leave the drm in.
