It has been mentioned previously in this thread, but it needs to be mentioned again:
No One lives forever (both games)
System Shock 2 is not a pure shooter, but it is also stellar.

Portal is a very different game from Half Life, so I can see why someone would like one but not the other. HL is a shooter, Portal is a puzzle game.

Mafia 1, no question.
It is older one, but it has some special atmosphere and charm. Story is top notch, every person I know which played it felt in love. Even non gamers.
I probably dont know anyone who finished it only 1 time, it is impossible IMO.

No really, I have tons of first person shooters like, both Metros, Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 2, Medal of Honor Warsomething(was that first person?), Battlefield 4 and 3, Insurgency, both Paydays, Arma II, DayZ, Far Cry 3, Dead Rising and I have a couple of third persons like Alan Wake, LA Noire, Resident Evil 4 and 6. Still the best one is cry of fear. If she liked HL2, Cry of Fear was made on the same engine. It has a mind twisting story and it's really fucking fun to play. That's one of the only games I felt in love with. The second one you can get for her is LA Noire. Beautiful story and fun to play. But it's open world. So the last games I'll recommend for her are the two Resident Evils I have. 4 and 6. Don't get the other ones, because they are crap. Oh and Silent Hill Homecoming. Personally I loved the game. The music is nice, it's atmospheric and it's really fun. If you read this, please leave your opinion on this. Just want to know if my taste on games is good or bad.

Wait for the Christmas sale and i think it will be around 10-15 dollars. That's the lowest it will get, but its worth for every penny

One I didn't see mentioned here is Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. You can get it for $3-4 on a seasonal sale and is fantastic. It is one of the few games in the past couple years that I finished and instantly replayed. It is a fairly guided experience but the story is great, the storytelling itself is a feature in the game, and the gameplay is basically the quick draw system from Red Dead Redemption made into a full game.

Also, everyone should play Spec Ops: The Line.

Since she is a new gamer maybe she should try other genres as well? It may turn out that she'll like something else even better. I suggest Bastion - definitely great story, fantastic art and incredible soundtrack. Oh, you played it, than you know it already! Or Transistor - all same greatness applied, but more romantic and futuristic. And you should try it too, btw.

Chaser

It is my favourite video game.
Although it is an old shooter game, in my opinion this game has an excellent story (much better than the newest games have) and it is a very atmospheric game!
