MW3 is going to use Steamworks so it's definitely and ONLY activatable on Steam
anyways thanks for the info, hope I can grab my hands on BF3 :V

I gave you another chance to win, even though I'm pretty sure both will be awful because of EA's stupid decisions on BF3 (no server browser, no mod support, no steam, origin, etc) and MW3 because it's MW3.

I'm at the alpha and the battlelog/outside server browser is great, trust me on this I'm not even afraid to say it's better than an in-game browser, it's intuitive, fast and not at all laggy or intrusive. The game is top notch so far even with only some small scale maps as of now. Mod support I gotta agree though, which is a shame since BF2 had a lot of awesome mods.

Like NachoPiggy, I also played the BF3 alpha trial, and I don't have anything bad to say about how it worked on Origin and I'm not one of those that going to hate it just because it's not Steam.
The in-browser server browser worked wonderfully and only made the process of quitting the game/switching servers faster using alt+tab, as a result of the removal of the requirement to press escape to get tp the in-game's menu, to only quit to the main menu to then get to the server browser and wait for it to refresh completely (just like in BC2) to join a different server or just quit the game from the game's main menu.
With how it works with the in-browser server browsers, it's just much faster and smoother. You just select a server you want to join, click join and the game loads. Then when you find the server you joined is not to your liking (for what ever reason), you just alt+tab without quitting and select a different server to join. And if you want to quit the game, you just alt+tab from the game to the browser, and click "quit" on the game status screen that pops in browser lower part when you join a game; which closes the game instantly. Unlike the "press escape > quit to main menu > quit from game completely".
Now about mods; I don't agree with their decision too and found the "the tools are too complicated for the "average" user" excuse really poor. They should release the modding tools and let us decide if it's too complicated, or not. But then they also said “We’re considering mod tools” recently, so it's not lost hope yet.

I also played the alpha and I could not disagree more. Having to run two separate programs linked together with a shoddy plugin does not make for a good cohesive experience imo.
Yes, Dice usually makes absolutely horrible in-game browsers and has been for the longest time... but that's no reason to convert the whole thing to a website. There's lots of games that does it right, as in you can just press ESC and click "servers" to bring up a list quickly. ALT-tabbing out of the game to anything is not intuitive, it's just bringing you out of the experience.
It's also forcing you to be online while you play singleplayer. Something that for example UBIsoft gets a lot of flak for but for some reason people don't realize BF3 will be exactly the same.
Not to mention that a browser with plugins etc. running can very well run half a gig of RAM as well as having things auto-refresh etc. It's not something you should be running in the background while gaming.
As for the mods... yeah, we're never going to see them. They said the exactly the same thing prior to Bad Company 2's release. There was all the excuses like how the engine was "too new" or it would take too many resources for regular people to compile maps etc. They also said it would be a security risk somehow (don't even know what they meant with that one).
However they always followed that up with "We'll consider adding it post-release", basically it means nothing.

"Having to run two separate programs linked together with a shoddy plugin does not make for a good cohesive experience imo."
The only thing you needed Origin for in the alpha, is to download and install the game. After that, you launched the game through the web browser after loging in to battlelog. And battlelog is pretty much works the same as Steams "community"; it shows you on which server your friends play and lets you join them, share screenshots/videos, comment on each others personal page, see different stats of games/weapons, chat in the forums and etc. And yeah, forces you to keep you logged in, just as much as every game on Steam (which you can't even launch if Steam isn't running in the background).
And seeing as Steam is pretty much a modified Chrome browser nowadays (built on its engine and every page on Steam is just a webpage), you can't really say both services are really different. The only difference here, is that you can log in to battlelog from Firefox/any other different browser of your choosing and not be forced to use Chrome.

The difference is that Valve has full control over that "browser" though, they can keep it lean and mean. Steam with the store/community windows open takes less than 50mb of RAM and efficiently unloads all of it when you minimize or run something else.
Using the regular browser for running games is something else entirely. Keep in mind that a lot of people run old version of FireFox or Internet Explorer, which with a lot of tabs open etc. eat resources like there's no tomorrow. They aren't designed to be launchers for other resource heavy programs.
Steam does not force you to be logged in. You need to login once and then you can go into Offline mode, which disables all those community features etc. allowing you to run singleplayer games without an internet connection. BF3 will require you to be signed into Battlelog the whole time even if your just playing singleplayer though, requiring the internet connection as you need to reach the website to launch it.

I'm personally using Firefox, and I never really saw it go above 200mb in usage (I'm a light surfer, that restarts his browser every few minutes and only keep three tabs at max open). When you combine that with the amount of ram that the alpha of BF3 used (which was the highest of 1998mb in my tests), you only get ~2.3gigabytes of ram used. These days, the minimum for people that play PC games, is four gigabytes. Now if you'll try to run BF3 with only 2 gigabytes of ram in total in your system, not even closing the browser and launching Steam instead of it going to help you gain more performance out of the game.
And Steam does force you to run Steam in the background and be logged in to your account (in offline mode or not). Origin on the other hand, does not. After you downloaded the game through Origin and it installed it, you can safely close Origin and launch your game directly without it. Here's a fine example of it in action: Launching a singleplayer/multiplayer game that was installed through Origin: It launches without opening Origin after you input the game's cd-key. Launching a singleplayer game that was installed through Steam: It launches Steam instead, for you to log in to your account
And it's well known that Steams off-line mode, isn't always properly working. Even sometimes when you'll unplug the ethernet cable/wifi card; which is the most known fix for that problem.
Now I don't know where you've read that BF3 will require constant internet connection to play the singleplayer (I'm not arguing for that fact for the MP part :) ), but I'm gonna call bullshit on that rumor (if it's even a rumor). Even in the MP only alpha, the game had signs of the singleplayer DRM (if you still have the alpha installed, check the "core" directory). It was the same DRM as in BC2. Which the only authorization that required internet there, was the MP section. And it was activated using your EA account, just like battlelog.
The singeplayer section was separate and only required cd-key authentication, and if you didn't have Internet connection, could be done using the DVD check.
And until the game going to be released or someone from DICE/EA going to say otherwise about the DRM on the singleplayer; that's the version I'm going to stick to, as it's the only one with some "back" behind it.

I'm pretty sure that you can never completely uninstall origin if you want to play the games. It stays in your computer luring information, even though it's not showing up completely.
Steam on the other hand asks you if you want to share your info, and provides you with the community/Steam Overlay.

And here's one without the referral, if you don't want to gift me the extra chance to win: link WITHOUT referral
Good luck all.
And before anyone asks; I also don't know if MW3 is going to be activatable on Steam. BF3 isn't going to be for sure, as it's Origin exclusive game.
Edit: PEOPLE THAT THANK ME FOR BASICALLY USING MY REFERRAL LINK, PLEASE READ: I'm the one that suppose to thank you. So, THANK YOU!
And please, try to skip my referral link from now on. I already got more than I deserved for just pasting two links :)
From now on, I'll paste referral links from people that want to gain a few extra chances on their side. So leave your referral link in the comments and I'll edit them in here whenever I can and as many as I can, so others could see them and click them on random (I'm not saying not to, but please don't go for the first link on the list if and when there's going to be a good number of them on it. Make your mouse cursor dance a bit and then click on the closest link to it) instead of my link.
HEY, LOOK OVER HERE (and click one random referral link)!
