Because Valve would get hacked and it would get changed to GETALIFE.WAV.

Actually, people would just find it annoying.

Valve has probably more important things to do.

Would be messy for achievement heavy games.
Arcen games' A Valley without Wind for example would be a sound fest.

If you actually hunt achievements or trophies on console, the sound that plays quickly becomes one of your favorite things to hear. Tough to understand if you don't give a shit about achievements, I'm sure... but it's fun. Adds another little element to the whole thing.

At least make it optional, off by default. :-)

I agree. Getting achievements has become it's own little meta game for me. Although I'd much prefer a scoring system like psn or live have. The fact that some devs can put in 500 achievements makes them feel less special to me and since they don't contribute to a global score feel less valuable. I'd love to see valve revamp the whole achievement system but since so many gamers are pissing on them so much, it seems less likely that would happen.

Yeah, and all those people using Achivement Managers and stuff are making the whole thing even worse

But there is a sound. Every time you get an achievment, a random quote by Gordon Freeman is played.
