Think about the way these people live. They get fed propaganda constantly, they are taught that their leader is some sort of perfect super-Jesus, that their country is the best in the world and all other countries suck, and everyone who disagrees goes to prison or is executed for treason. If you lived there, you'd be crying too whether you were really sad or not.
Besides, it's not like those things only happen over there. As you mentioned, celebrities over here are mourned by millions as well, and we are also flooded with Hollywood propaganda about how great they were and people are supposed to forget that they were humans with their own flaws and missteps. Look at the way the press portrayed Amy Winehouse before her death and after her death. You already mentioned Michael Jackson, who had gotten a very negative image before he died, but everyone suddenly forgot about that when he died. Look at Steve Jobs, who was essentially nothing but a very shrewd salesman, but who was practically declared a saint after his death.
I find it hard to point any fingers at those poor people when we have plenty of golden calves of our own.

Faster than an altar boy running from a priest! Able to leap tall churches in a single bound!
For what it's worth I think people who praise Steve Jobs are idiots.

I do, I didn't say anything about the South Koreans, did I? You don't think North Koreans play Starcraft at all?

LOL.
North Korea does not have imports of video games, and normal people can't get real access to the global internet. There's no way anyone could play Starcraft in North Korea. Their computers even use their own weird Linux-based North Korean OS.

You can't be sure, if you don't live there. I'd like to think there's someone smart enough to get it working, hidden from those who would oppress.

Maybe it's because he was a horrible, horrible person, but I find the fact that North Korea is BAWWWWing over Jong-il's death extremely hilarious.
To be fair, I also found it hilarious how people seem to forget, once he died, that Michael Jackson loved to touch kids.
Sure, to those who know any sort of celebrity personally on a positive basis, losing them sucks ass. But if you aren't directly connected to the person, don't cry as if you lost a loved one.
