Do Steam keys get used if you already owned the game?

Do Steam keys get used if you accidentally redeem a key for a game you already have? If they don't, then here's a free key for The Showdown Effect:

Nope. They don't get used. It will give you a message that you already own the game.

Yeah I got the message, but I couldn't remember whether or not that message meant that the key was now invalidated.

Nope. The key is valid until the game is on someone's account.
