Looks like my choices are a bit different than the people here.
I use some programs from GNU, it's much better than the "common" ones. interface is more clean and in my opinion a way more beautiful.
Gedit for text editor.
Evince for pdf reader.
You can get them on https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps.
I personally love Transmission for torrents.

I'm genuinely surprised more people haven't mentioned it, but get some imaging/backup software. Acronis, Paragon, something along those lines, and do regular backups so you're not another one of those "My HDD died and I lost everything!" people.

My recommendation would be f.lux, a program that I'm certain to install on all my new installations from when I found out about it. Not for everyone, and it does take a day or two to get used to it, but I do find it really useful.

Steam (battle.net, origin and uplay for me personally too), Chrome, MSI Afterburner, Speccy, office pack and that's about it for me :P

If you reddit, get imagus and RES. Imagus is useful for other pages as well.
Configure Windows Services to your needs, get a windows hosts file (some apps do it automatically - spybot search and destroy).

i always wanted to try SVP, and i finally did thanks to your post (thanks for that!). in fast scenes i get artefacting, unfortunately. did you have the same problem? is there a way to fix it?
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, I'm on an older CPU + MOBO, so I guessed, that it can't handle the full processing, and thought that artifacts will disappear on better hardware. If you have the rig to toggle everything to max and it still shows artifacts, well, I guess than this is what SVP project can handle currently. The benefits of 60 FPS outdo the artifacts for me, but if you want a clearer picture, maybe it's not the best solution. 25 FPS or 60 FPS with artifacts is the question here :) I do hope that it gets better though.

oh, i didn't yet try to alter any settings. i really just tried it out for a few minutes. my rig shouldn't be the problem (6700k, gtx 1080). i wanted to invest more time later and see if i can get it to work properly. i thought maybe you had the solution and could save me some time, that's why i asked. i read on a forum you need the pro version in order to fix those artifacts. which would be alright, i have no problem paying for good software. i just would like to be sure it works before i buy. :)

Did a quick test with the Pro version, and it seems better at masking artifacts. Bonus is that is lets you fine tune video settings too, and works with streaming videos too. As I said, I can't use the highest quality setting, but with ~80% settings, it gave nice results.

i bought Pro as well yesterday. i know i said i want to test it first. sometimes i can't help myself. impulsive buyer... ^^
i have to say that upping the quality and artifact masking to maximum did not eliminate artifacts to an acceptable degree. well, i would say the only acceptable degree is if they vanish completely. ^^ so i tried out a lot of stuff (forget the slider, use the advanced options) and the most important setting is the frame interpolation mode. as you probably already know, it defines how many original frames are used and how many interpolated ones. the more you interpolate, the smoother the image gets. but more frames to calculate also mean more possible bad motion vectors and therefore artifacts. the setting 1m produces a very smooth image. it's this almost unnatural feeling smoothness that takes some getting used to. this is what i originally wanted (i wanted to see, if i get completely used to it after a few weeks). but no matter what i try, it produces artifacts. but 1.5m (=1.5 repeated original frames) works very well. the image is not as smooth (which for many people will be good, since it doesn't look like watching news ^^). but it is definitely smoother and sharper looking than the usual 24fps. and absolutely no artifacts. so until they improve SVP, i think that's what i'm going to use from now on. i am also happy that it works well with my preferred video player (Zoom Player).
here are my current settings. i am sure they are not perfect. but they work for me right now. and i will definitely play a lot more with those values. ^^

A couple of Chrome extensions I consider essential:
Tabs Outliner: Manager for tabs. Large amounts of tabs. I can't remember how I managed to manage tabs without it. I only remember I always had more than 20 tabs open in one window and the setting was what is now called "Continue where you left off" (open all old tabs on startup) because I was afraid to lose some tab forever.
Cloud To Butt Plus: The title is mostly self-explanatory. I could certainly live without it, but that life wouldn't be very fun.

For uninstallers, I would suggest Revo Uninstaller. You'll have much more flexibility on what you want to remove (since there are 3 different uninstall options), but I use it for complete uninstallations for programs. It will first run the program's own uninstaller, then look for leftover file folders and registry entries and it will give you the option to tick or untick each individual entry it finds so you can decide if you want to keep anything or just delete them all.
It has its own webpage, but I prefer to get it through Ninite.com
Disclaimer: The computer repair shop I worked for a few years ago, used Revo Uninstaller as a standard tool on all the machines that came in, which is how I found out about it.

Oh god, I read "Internet Browser" as "Internet Explorer" and thought you had gone mad for a moment.

If it's for gaming, get MSI Afterburner as well. Good all-round monitoring/overclocking tool.
Also Rainmeter because customization skins are awesome.

Thanks
