Is it acceptable to try to win a game pack if you own some of the things in the pack and then create a giveaway for the things you already have? Better yet, when getting a pack are you able to choose what you download and what you keep as a gift?

If it is a pack you cant nick pick games, So I belive you cant enter for the game. Also retrading breaks the CV sistem so no also.

This seems dubious, at best. Check the FAQ!

  • Entering for a packfrom which you own some of the items - Depends on the creator
  • Giving away won items - Never allowed, it is to be for your collection, not to boost your CV

Most packs don't give you gifts at all, let alone let you pick what you activate and what you have in inventory.

Your second bullet is actually incorrect. If you win a Valve Complete Pack, for example, and own Half-Life already, you can give away the extra copy you get form redeeming the pack. It's not regifting, because it's technically a new item.

You have to ask the giveaway creator if he's ok with you having some of the games in the bundle/collection

Was just curious, I was not even sure you could pick what you wanted from the pack anyways. So, now I know not to try to win packs that include games I own.

As others have already said, it depends on the situation, and you should ask permission. Some packs will give you copies of what you already own (which you may give away), some don't. In any case, it is considered proper to ask the creator of the giveaway for permission to enter when you already own one (or more) of the games included in the pack.

Check Steam's Extra Copies FAQ for specifics, but usually no extra copies of duplicate games will appear in your inventory, they just go to waste.

Often a giveaway creator will write something like "please don't enter if you already own three of these games" or "please don't enter this just for the dlc" - but if they don't say, be sure to ask before trying to win it.

I wonder if any valve complete pack winners ever give the extra games back to the giveaway creator. That would seem to be the proper thing to do, so probably not. :)

>Is it acceptable to try to win a game pack if you own some of the things in the pack?

Technically, yes, this is perfectly "legal". Is it acceptable? It depends on how much of the pack you own, really. I would suggest asking the giveaway maker just to be sure — what is acceptable varies from person to person. Note that the giveaway owner has the option to re-roll the giveaway if he/she feels you own too much of the collection.

>[...]and then create a giveaway for the things you already have?

Once again, technically "legal", but imo proper etiquette would be to return these gifts, assuming you even get any extra gifts at all.

>Better yet, when getting a pack are you able to choose what you download and what you keep as a gift?

No. Packs are redeemed entirely, even if you already own some of the games. See fiftykyu's post regarding extra copies.

I was asking because someone put up the Assassin's Creed Pack and I owned 1 and 2, but not the other three. I entered before thinking to ask so thankfully I didn't win.
