This is the best place I can think of to post this right now, I hope some helpful people read this :)

Ok, so my problem is this: for about half a year scammers started adding me on steam. It's gotten really bad lately, it's so frustraing!

Every day (!) at least 2 people add me on steam with zero level, private accounts and yesterday 2 comments on my profile, to click some stupid links. So I have to block 2-3 friend invites every day, and it's ruining my time on steam to be honest. Even if it's just a few clicks each day, this is not something I want to spend a second of my gaming time on. Besides, I don't want to block anyone with honest intentions. (Well, we're on a giveaway site, so you know what I mean)

So three questions to you kind people:

  1. Do you guys get this, too? Do you constantly block scammers all day long? Or is it just me?

  2. Where do they find me? I never did nothing on scam sites. Is it just something everybody gets above a hundred games, and a steam level of 20? What am I doing wrong? I'm not even trading games with shady people for godssake, I'm just playing my games.

  3. (most importantly) How do I get rid of these idiots? Anybody with a solution, or any kind of suggestion?

Thanks for the useful comments!

P.S.: If you have a crazy/funny story about scammers, they're welcome, too :D

EDIT: Thank you all for your awnsers! I'm glad I'm not the only one, and I'm sad that so many of us are suffering from this :( Have a scammer-free day everyone! :D

i hear that they catch username of anyone who trading a lot, and that all, those who never trade anything like me , nearly never got one
And when those people got your name, it will go around , and several different people will try add you with their bot (it the same as those insurance or banking people have your name and phone and call you several time)

There was a level 0 that was trading with me before that was on steam for 2 years, he was real, so you can trust some people

There might be lots of ways they use to find people. What i've noticed is it always gets worse for me if I post in trading subforums especially for games like CS:Go, TF2 etc. with busy markets. And I think it's very probable that there are scripts running, checking random public profiles and checking the size of your inventory. If it's above certain parameters then you'll probably be dealing with this.
Unfortunately I don't know of any way to counter that other than going silent and setting your account to private which honestly is not really a solution.

I got two requests the other day, minutes after bumping my SG trade thread. Added them & was instantly hit with a message containing a phishing link.

Same thing....

They usually add me not when I bump my trading threads or something like that, but... when I'm playing. Every time, every game.

I got 2-3 request daily, more when i start to play any game and sometimes they post scam links in my profile´s wall. Most of them are the super popular [unassigned].
I tried leaving some public groups but still they keep sending invites, sometimes i wonder when it will stop... but then i remember that bots never forget... D:

1 - Yes... normally 2 to 4, depending on the week..
2 - Like other people said, it is most likely from you going/talking on threads ,but probably also from being on steam groups... for example, my friend with 3 groups only receive 1 invitation, has i with 150 (i think...) groups, probably already have got 50 invitations.. and him and i never talk on threads... on fact this is my first time talking in a steamgifts discussion.
3 - No, to be honest, everytime someones adds me, i will come where (steamgifts) to see if i won anything.. if not i just block them... on the beginning i was just ignoring, but they appear to send multiple invites...

4 - For the honest people.. i just have this on my steam profile:
"I, will not accept friend requests from profiles which are not public. Sorry, but there are a lot of scammy people out there, and i will do my best to avoid them... Be warned, because you will get blocked..."

They're everywhere, all the time. Just infinite scam robots.

Your only hope is to just ignore them as they come, really. I don't expect Valve to do anything to restrict level 0 people anytime soon.

I get one scammer invitation or comment once a week or every two weeks. Sometimes in the middle of a match : " HELLO CLICK THIS LINK MY FRIEND WANTS TO TRADE HIS SOUL TO YOU LALALALALA"

I just came to this messageboard to complain about scammers too. These past 2-3 days I got 3 friend invites on steam every day (they have private profiles)..and say some crap like 'hahaha is this your screenshot'then they post a link. I googled the link instead of opening it and someone else says if u open that site, it leads to your pc getting infected with a virus.

BEWARE AND DON'T OPEN STRANGE LINKS ON STEAM.

Well today I've got my first comment phishing link, am I famous now? :D

Anyway, they're still there and even taking up ppl that are not too active, I've been practically off the site for the past month - exams are bad for your health). Even longer from ST, I trade only once in a while - twice a year or less.

As for today I've come to see if those shortened links are something new, since it was my first receiving one of those, but well seems they've been around for a while :P

Hmm as for more interesting links, that I received (from random invite) was steamcornmunity one

I get 10+ invites a day. Sure, I do display my inventory on my profile, but that's beside the point. The phishing links being posted on my profile recently got so bad that I had to change my comments to "friends only". You don't even want to know the size of my block list.

You really don't.
