I myself am a complete movie nerd. It's really hardcore. Creative intent is uber-important for me which means that I want to see the movie or TV-series the way the creators intended them to be seen. As such, I always try to get my hands on the uncut and/or longest version available.
I also disable every feature on my TV that fiddles with the picture quality or changes the picture. I want to see the movie as it was intended. I could write more about my setup but because I don't know if anyone is interested (in the technical details), I will do this in a reply to this comment if anyone asks.
It is very important for me to actually own my movies and TV-series. Yeah, I do have Streaming Services, but we canceled most of them. I am still collecting physical media and that took over my spending habits for games.
Here is a picture of my collection:

That's impressive mate. Nowadays, people rarely buy physical copies of movies, at least in my country.
I have to ask, if its not too much, what's your favorite movie in that holy pile?
Comment has been collapsed.
Out of all the money Movies and TV-Series made in the last fiscal quarter in North America, physical media made up only 1.8%. Yes, that's right: 1.8%!
You can imagine my shocked and sad face when I read that a few weeks ago.
But I am sure that physical media will stay, albeit as a niche product for enthusiasts. And at a high price, way more expensive than today.
My favourite movie? It's close. Batman: The Dark Knight might take the second place. I have to think long and hard about second and third place.
But the winner are three movies I consider as one: Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson. I am a Tolkien nerd, although I haven't read all there is. But I am actually one of the rare people that loved the Silmarillion :D

Physical media ftw! I just started buying blu-ray and 4k movies over the past 1-2 years. Have about 100 now, so nothing too impressive but it's nice to know I can go back and watch my favorites any time I want instead of relying on streaming services to have them (or sailing to open seas).
Mostly avoid regular DVD's though (despite their menus normally being way nicer then blu-ray and 4k ones) since they often look terrible on my 65' OLED :p
Comment has been collapsed.
I am 100% with you: Physical media for the win! :D And a big and warm HELLO, fellow collector =)
Oh, I still do buy the occasional DVD here and there, if the movie or TV-Series is not availabe in HD or if all HD-releases are cut or the HD-releases only offer the Theatrical Cut but the DVD offers the Director's Cut

I am sitting in our living room which is really less than optimal as a home cinema. Wish I had a whole room to transfer as a Home Cinema but I have to live with what our flat provides us. So it's a less than ideal setup but I made it work and get the most out of it.
I am watching on a premium 77" OLED-TV (wall-mounted) and have turned every technical enhancement that fiddles with the picture off. For sound, I am using an AVR linked to really good speakers. As a setup, I am using 5.1.4 but have placed the height speakers according to Auro 3D, not according to Dolby Atmos. This enables me to enjoy Auro 3D and Dolby Atmos. Installed like this, Atmos even sounds better than in the way Dolby wants you to install your speakers. A very good UHD-Player and a middle tier CD-Player are also connected to the AVR as well as a Fire-TV Cube directly to the TV as a streaming device. To protect the OLED from Sunlight and to dampen the room, I have installed a blackout curtain in the back.
Devices:
TV: LG OLED77G19LA
Front: 2x Dali Rubicon 6 Black Edition
Center: 1x Dali Rubicon Vokal
Surrounds: 2x Dali Oberon On-Wall
Subwoofer: 1x Dali Sub E-12 F
Heights: 4x Dali Alteco C-1
AVR: Denon AVC-X 4700H
UHD-Player: Panasonic DP-UB824EGK
CD-Player: Denon DCD-800NE
Lowboard: Spectral Scala

Very good setup, the 77" screen looks small in the photo xD but I have seen TVs like that in person and they are huge (and expensive).
I own an LG OLED C2 but the 48" version, like a PC monitor compared to yours. About your audio setup... poor neighbours (if you have them) :D
Having seen your movie collection I expected that you already own a UHD player, I am proud of you :D
Congrats and enjoy that setup to the fullest.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thank you very much :)
The C-Series is a fantastic choice if you go for how much performance you get for 1 Dollar/Euro/Sloti/whatever. Congrats on that.
The neighbors are okay ^^ The AVR doesn't have enough power to be super loud, but that's not our goal. It gets super hot, though, and needs to be cooled when you go for volumes beyond 70% of it's capability. Which we don't. 60% at max is enough for us, most of the time.
I will also answer your question regarding the front speakers here: No, the distance to the wall is fine. Dali recommends to put them 20-30 cm away from the wall and I have them about 24ish cm away from the wall.
Comment has been collapsed.
The AVR doesn't have enough power to be super loud
200 W per channel seems like a lot of power IMHO :D
Dali recommends to put them 20-30 cm away from the wall
I always heard that you should put them as far as possible, with a minimum of 50 cm, but the manufacturer of that model should know better than anyone. In any case, you are using a subwoofer so the lower frequencies will be reproduced by it instead of the front speakers.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes and No ^^
Since the fronts already are capable of producing a full and "round" bass sound, I am only using the sub for frequencies lower than 80hz. Everything above is handled by the fronts.
And for music, I am going full stereo, so 2.0, without the sub, to get the intended sound as it was mixed in the studio.
Comment has been collapsed.
Those are personal preferences but I would use the subwoofer to play music too. The front speaker specs are 38 - 34,000 Hz while the sub can go as low as 28 Hz (28 - 190). I know that those extremely low frequencies are inaudible, yes, you can't hear them BUT you can feel them. Probably in some studios were using monitors which can go as low as 20 Hz (they do exist) so you are missing the ultra low frequencies between 38 and 28 Hz in some records.

I'd also consider myself a huge movie and series fan but I've long abandoned the idea of collecting everything.
This year I've so far watched 125 new movies and 49 TV series.Storing them all would be madness.
My only regret about going digital only is the horrible availability of niche products. Yoji Yamada is one of my favorite directors but none of his movies are available on ANY digital platform in Germany.
On the other hand streaming has its benefits too. I'd never have come into contact with K-drama without Netflix .:-p

In my country, I was part of the first wave of people who were totally hooked on Anime. This was at the start of the 1990s when the first VHS-tapes from Manga Entertainment found their way to Germany. This phase lasted for approx. ten years, when it began that the focus of those animes shifted to a good look at the knickers of the female protagonists.
I couldn't stand those movies and the hypersexualization and the anime genre lost me abruptly and completely.
I know that the genre is more alive than ever but I don't know any name of anything that comes out and I don't have any interest in in. What is a popular title called? Something like "My life got better as a slime in a dungeon"?
I am still watching Studio Ghibli, of course, and am eagerly waiting for someone to release the movies of the golden era on UHD or HD.
Edit:
Quick question: Those movies in your list, do you own them all? Or have you seen them online, at Crunchyroll or something comparable?

"My life got better as a slime in a dungeon"?
True that. Butit's not anime in general. You do realise that there are different genres inside anime right?
At least watch Frieren xD

less being canceled and more anime served as an advertisement for the manga/LN's. It is only relatively recently that they have realized there really is a market for animating the entire series.
Its been nice seeing series come to an end, Quintessential Quintuplets, Attack of Titan, Demon Slayer(ending soon, only a few movies left), My Hero Academia(has one more season coming and its the final one). Looks like Spice and Wolf might get the entire series animated with the new series(TBD)

Oh, you have a noticably big library. Since you planned Angel Beats, I can say, it's absolutely worth watching. And... if you don't mind, I give you some other recommendations.
You should watch (or, even, read) Suzumiya Haruhi.
I make all the way down your completes, but didn't find that brilliant title. You know what? If you want to, I may uncover it to you. But be careful, you could be addicted to it, so... Intrigued? Then watch Bakemonogatari before Kizumonogatari. It'll give you more understanding of what series is.
Also, I found that you plan to uncover the Cicada's secret. I thoroughly recommend you to read the visual novel first, beside starting with anime. Keep in mind that secret may be unfolded just once, so make sure to enjoy it yourself as much as you can. So novel is highly advised. You, may, even, start with not-original VN (I mean, voiced version)
Thanks for reading my scribble. Have a nice day 🎃

part of it is... is they are harder to notice when they come out.
I don't pay attention to what comes out at theatres at all, and movies are just silently released on streaming platforms... maybe get put on their home pages(which I don't visit, I have the watchlist pages bookmarked)... add in that sub groups and such don't frequently pick up movies its hard to use their releases as a notification that something came out to.

I did expect something astronomical from you :)
Aah, i love that collection of board games and I am sure those are not all that you own. Bought my wife Dorfromantik for christmas last year since she loved the video game. We both would like to play more board games but we are missing the friends to do so :-/
Most of our friends either live far away or are completely occupied with their families/kids and when it's just us two, we prefer to watch a movie or play a game. Board games are more enjoyable for me if you're at least four players.
How do you do that? Do you have a dedicated group of friends with whom you play?
Comment has been collapsed.
There might be some more boardgames around.
Right now I have like 2 dedicated groups (4+ players; 2 players) + some irregular board game friends. Was better, was worse over the years.
Most kids around are old enough to either join the board game or be for themself, why I play with their parent(s).
Depending where you live in NRW, there should be plenty of boardgaming near you. Too late for this year, but take a look at "Stadt-Land-Spielt" next year or similar ("<Stadtname> Spielt"). In addition there might be a Brettspielcafe or offener Spieleabend (zumindest entlag der Rhein-Ruhr Schiene gibt/gab es da einiges).

There are some excellent board games designed for 2 players that you might want to try sometime for something different. Since you are a LotR fan, The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth might interest you. Other personal favorites are Schotten Totten, Lost Cities, and Patchwork. If you would like to try a cooperative game with your wife, Sky Team is challenging and interesting.

I like it, but I only played the digital one for a little bit. It is quite expensive though. Try to find some place (game fair, ...) to test it, before buying.

That's completely fine in itself :)
I didn't want to make it sound that it is neccessary to have another hobby besides gaming or that people without another hobby are somewhat "lesser" or anything like that. And I hope it didn't come across that way :-/
If gaming is your hobby and you're satisfied, that's very good! As long as you're satisfied :)

Yay books! Our library has regular cheap sales, that make it very hard to constrain my collection to that amount you have of 5 shelves... Your tabletop gaming shelf is intriguing as I don't recognize so many! Except some older AD&D hiding in the middle with those orange spines.
I've been taken in by some recent kickstarters. Waiting for Obojima. Ran a game with Brindlewood Bay. And I picked up Coyote and Crow out of curiosity. Sometimes settings are just fun to read, like Wildsea.

You have a keen eye!
It's mostly French old Pen&Paper so no wonder you don't recognize them. There is also an old Warhammer (when it was not yet called battle or age of sigmar). There is also Hawmoon and James Bond :)
And Torg was an American one if I'm not wrong!

Do my eyes deceive me, or is that a whole shelf of HH books?
At least The First Heretic is easy to recognize :D

Military. The F-14 Tomcat, BAE Hawk, and E-2 Hawkeye are my favourites. I also have a few civilians as well. All of them are die-cast except for a Spitfire which I built and painted. It was a fun experience but since it was my first time doing a model kit, the final product looked super crude. I had a display cabinet built 3 years ago to display my collection. Would have loved to share some pictures but I have been living away from home for more than one and a half years now.

A fellow movie buff and collector! Hooray! Hello, beautiful soul :D
At the moment, the number of physical media is 2783, according to the My Movies-app, but it's missing pre-orders. I also keep track via an Excel-Sheet, including pre-orders and movies or TV-series still missing in the My Movies-app. Excel says 2815 movies and TV-series.

Wow! That's a lot. I also used to keep an Excel spreadsheet (so I wouldn't buy multiple copies) but it was on an email that I no longer have access to so I had to restart and just made a list on IMDB.

Damn I'm so jealous, to be able to watch it for the first time! It's such an incredible show, it made me want to get into Ping Pong and I haven't played since I was 6-7 years old. Couldn't imagine a bigger love letter to the sport, and the music for it is something else entirely

This might look like a normal tin box, but it's a trophy to me!
My hobby is chess, I play a lot online, the first time I played over the board I got second place! This was the prize: a tin box to hold pre-grounded coffee, and 500g of arabica coffee inside!
The first place got a lousy t-shirt of the event, so I was very happy to win this :)

Like many, I read (90 books this year so far). Have played in a TTRPG or sometimes run a campaign since I was little. And I print-and-play and sometimes design/help design boardgames. Generally prefer to focus on art and retheme, to practice drawing and such. Here's some of my more unique builds.

Actually, gaming is pretty much the only hobby I've got left - and I play A LOT to compensate for that. I gave up cross-stitching because apparently it was the only thing that helped me relax after yet another death of a loved one, and, of course, at some point cross-stitching got connected with death in my brain. I barely watch TV-series because it doesn't make sense without an ability to discuss them with my dad. Since cinema is almost dead in Russia (sure, there are awful Russian movies and some pirated Western movies, but the very idea of paying for this stuff disgusts me), and Moscow is off my favourite musicians' tour map, I've also pretty much stopped listening to music and watching movies at home - I don't quite understand the logic myself, but that's how it is. Same with exhibits, Russia is in cultural isolation (for obvious reasons, yeah), and this sucks so hard.
On the positive side, I'm reading again - mostly re-reading sci-fi classics I haven't touched since I was a teenager, apparently Bradbury and Simak are even better in English. Also, my job is closely connected with gaming, I actually translate games for a living - and I love it!

For what it's worth, and even if I completely understand how you feel and why, I'd advise you to not let your other hobbies disappear slowly. I know someone who lost also her last interest and found herself without any reason to continue. She's better now, but it was tough.
Keep doing some usual stuff , just to not lose the taste completely!
Sorry if it's a bit intrusive.

here you can follow me or commission me if anyone is interested :)

whoa.. looks awesome! how does one get started with the whole drawing thing?
Comment has been collapsed.
I can jump in with my own experience, though it may differ. First you draw something, and it looks totally wrong. Then you redraw if 5-30 more times, and it looks more like you wanted. Repeat until desired results. ;)
I have found it useful to look at the various books or resources that show you how to draw figures based on basic geometric shapes, and then fill in. It gives it a good structure, and then you can branch out as you get the idea. Also, some people are just super good at drawing (and sometimes that's just because they started at age 3 and didn't stop). Another option: Find a style you like, and try tracing some ideas and building your own from that, then eventually you'll find yourself tracing less and doing more yourself. I would draw a picture, then put tracing paper over, redraw what worked and rework what didn't. There are also useful shading/warmup exercises if you Google.

Well I love to cook, not as a daily chore . But Im usually hesitant to share pics, as whatever I make doesn't look as presentably sexy at the end. Which is fine, asocial dude who isn't good enough for an insta worthy post ? No problem🐒.
But mind you, it tastes fantastic most of the time! I probably need to learn photography theory or something (maybe patience!) + experience.
On second thought, I guess I'll upload today's experiment here to highlight my point. First is what I made, lighting makes it brighter. Second is how it was supposed to look 😂
It did taste divine tho, heck my tummy and my taste-buds even thanked me! O(∩_∩)O

Starting to look fancy! A softer light might help, but I love how the colors of the food pick up the brown lines in the bowl. Also, sesame is delicious. As you say, with a saucy dish like this, you're going to get shine. Ooh, what kind of fish?
Sometimes, for a picture, I'll use a fork to distribute the food more evenly, for instance, so the bell pepper shows a bit in more places. It's fast to do without fussing too much. (I usually forget and start eating my food first...!)

Sorry for the delay in reply, the fish in the previous pic was Tilapia usually people go with Basa(catfish) or Salmon fillets. Id been procrastinating on cooking a photo worthy dish, and it has almost been a week. So I gave up and decided to put some effort and share with you my breakfast🫣
This is an attempt at Benne dosa(butter dosa). I went stingy on the butter, cz I like the idea of not dying early!
I know it looks a little pretentious, ive never done the smear thing ever. I wanted to capture the major elements in a succinct look. So I put the potato masala mixture there to show that, that was enveloped between the dosa. Kept the onion, curry leaf on top to highlight them as key ingredients. Usually people add a tiny bowl with the 'gun powder' coconut oil chutney thingy. Its this regional South Indian thing. But since I use less, I decided to smear😬. A tiny amount was also spread onto the dosa, while frying it.
The dosa in restaurants are usually picture perfect evenly brown and round, I was struggling and this was the 3rd attempt at a near circle.
So yea, some goof ups but it tasted great. Obviously the restaurant ones are divine...cz a ton of salted butter. The lighting might be on issue as I dont have good natural light into my kitchen. I definitely will keep practicing!
Thanks a lot for the mini crash course in here. I don't think Ive given so much thought about how my food is served. I loved doing it 😁

I think that the hobby that has lasted most in my life has been moviebinge. I have almost 4000 items voted in iMDB. And I know there are a couple hundreds watched but not voted. I also like to know about cinema, the stories around and behind a movie. To give you an example, the last 3-4 hours of documentaries I've seen are about the Alien saga. There are two 2-hours making-ofs of Jaws, and I've seen them several times. And of course, one of the best, Surviving the Abyss. I can also recommend Hearts of Darkness (about Apocalypse Now). Sadly here in Spain no BR release has that documentary. Yes, I do have Blu-Ray discs and a player. I have about 400 DVDs I'm going to donate to the local library, and 200 BR/DVD I am keeping for myself. Not that big of a collection, but I was always proud of it.
Music for me has always been so important that I never took it as a hobby. My tastes are very eclectic, tho there are lines I don't cross - reggaeton, and this endless fad of autotuning. Otherwise I can hear Cannibal Corpse, the Four Stations by Vivaldi, tho my fav musicians are Jean Michel Jarre and Mike Oldfield. I like a lot of 80's and 90's music of course, and let me say it again: Freddy Mercury was the best frontman of a rock band ever. Period.
I did a lot, and I mean a lot of reading since kid. My rate was consistently 100 pages per hour, which once allowed me to read The Lord Of The Rings (without anexxes) in one night, without stopping. However for some reason, after decades of constant reading, a few years ago I started having heavy concentration problems, I mean heavier than usual, and I couldn't read more than 5-10 pages before closing the book to do something else. I tried 2 years ago with one of my favourite saga ever, The Hyperion Cantos. I got stuck in the middle of the last book out of four. Now I've restarted with Dune, next planned is The Invincible, and then probably War with the Newts. Yes scifi is my fav genre both in reading and in movies.
Of course gaming. When a game really put its grasp on me (Doom, Quake, X-Wing, Uukrul, FH4, Assetto Corsa, ATS...) I'm really addicted.
I have other little things that I take and then leave. Learning is something I always like.
Finally, I always wanted to get more deep into origami/paper folding and in general working with paper (gift wrapping and such). It's something I have not kind of left aside, but I've done several things I'm very proud of. The link below will show you many japanese boxes, a heart with a blossom (hardest one I've done), tests of seahorses... I've done more, but I'm so hyped about finishing something properly that I end giving it away (can't keep everything, no space here) before I remember to take pics. The seahorse, done properly and with coloured paper, is pretty realistic. The elephant is done at double size with think cardboard, hard to work with when you're folding 4 layers at the end... I also did the same elephant in tin foil. Tin foil behaves opposite of paper. No matter how much care you put in holding it, wrinkles and lumps appear everywhere; and then, once you make a fold, inversing it through the same line (which is easy in paper) is an almost impossible task. The elephan in tin foil took me 90 minutes of sweat to make it. You'll also see three japanese boxes one inside the other, with a minimal one at the center, and a zoom of it. IIRC it is 13mm long (less than half an inch) and done with normal 80g paper from a notebook. I just thought "how small can I make these things?" and in microorigami you usually hold the piece with one hand and do the work with a special tool. I did it with my fat clumsy fingers. Yes microorigami is interesting, metal folding too (I don't mean tin foil, i mean bright special metal sheets), but in the end I just prefer to do the normal stuff. I have several books on origami and even a book with +300 paper planes.
Want to try paper folding? Get a normal paper sheet, cut a square from it as large as you can, and in YouTube type "easy paper folding" and try any of the hundreds simple things for starters. No need to buy books or special paper. Tho if you want, I know a place where they make high-quality paper sheets for origami professionals, starting at only $10 per sheet, and you can customize your paper requirements from IIRC $40 per sheet. Cheap as you've never seen.
I also like to write unnecesary lenghty posts/emails/messages. But it's not really a hobby. It's just that I seem to be unable to explain or tell things briefly.

100 pages per hour, [...] However for some reason, after decades [...] I couldn't read more than 5-10 pages
I have this same problem in the present tense, just that it probably happened while transiting to adulthood and things got busier. These days, I just try to tell myself to read 2 pages of something every day, after which the inertia hopefully takes over and I can aim for at least a chapter, but even then I may not achieve starting the 2 pages.
For paper folding, I had this odd hobby of taking paper ads (e.g. delivered to our mailboxes etc) and folding them into flowers (that four-petal lily design). Better than throwing them out instantly. It made for a very colourful bunch as they're all of different sizes, textures, and designs. But as you would expect, I put it in past tense because I no longer do it. Ad paper 😅 The things you achieve when younger...
[Edit] Just finished checking out the link... the tiniest box is indeed very cute and impressive! If it were years ago, I'd probably take your idea and start doing it with the advertisement papers!

Musical theatre. This was my first love before I needed back surgery a few years ago. Haven't gone back to the stage since then. There was covid, then my cancer diagnosis in between then and now. However, I am not too bad healthwise now, so am planning to rejoin for the next major show.
I also take part in the choral competitions whenever my old musical society is entering. This has helped me keep in touch with everyone, even during the times when I wasn't physically able to dance around a stage.
Just completed a one-year postgrad course in Video Game Design, so I'm dabbling in that too at the moment. It's so fun hehe.
