Basically, someone won my GA and I detected a rule breaking record. Is there a way to know if the person has been punished before I pursue the report?

Thanks.

there is not really a way....so you have to guess. As you spotted someone that did not obey the rules in the past.... you can´t expect he will obey them now...so i say...

On other hand, should you trust more ppl that never made mistake, or those that made one and learned from it?

write it again, cause fucking server
Thats the guess-part, if someone did a one time fault in the past, and since then nothing wrong...there is no reason for reroll, but here are members that violated the rules multiple times, traded their gifts....and those are also back after a couple of weeks....and I really disagree with the opinion, that some have here, that thouse should be reintegrated into the community as a full member

It always comes down to guess-part. No system will always be right. Some ppl need more mistakes to learn than others. Some will always look to game the system.

It all goes down to how much trust debt were willing to give as community i guess. Or cg, since hes law round here.

Not that I know of, even so I think that goes into the public shaming category if there was one

Agreed: if the offense was bad enough to get perma-banned, the user should have been; if not, after they've done their time, they should be reintegrated into the community as a full member. And when there is a genuine risk of future harm, there's a feedback system (e.g., reporting and the feedback system for trades). There's also personal blacklisting, for whatever reasons you choose.

You're thinking, "Oh I just want to protect myself." But in general this kind of thinking is just as perverse in real life as it is here. This is why we have high rates of recidivism, for instance: felons have to wear a scarlet letter on every job application, so they don't get an opportunity to change their circumstances, and lo and behold they turn back to crime. I don't mean to get ranty, but a violation is either ban worthy or its not, and perma-shaming or branding non-ban-worthy rule-breakers is barbaric.

That all depends on whether you think the punishments handed out by the establishment's justice system do truly fit the crime.

If a justice system "punished" child abusers with a single night in prison, would you consider the guilty parties to have "done their time" once they had served this arbitrary sentence?

I'd say that justice and redemption are a very subjective thing, and certainly not as straightforward and binary an issue as you suggest. Still, it's all about opinions, and I respect your enthusiasm for re-integrating even the worst offenders into the fold. For people who have very bad track records, however, I'm unconvinced that any length of "served time" would persuade me not to attempt a re-roll or, if it came to it, to hand over a game against my better judgement.

For any hard-of-thinking simpletons out there who think I am making any sort of direct comparison between child abuse with non-activation of a computer game, please take a leisurely stroll into the path of a fleet of fast-moving double-decker buses, and do your bit to limit the spread of the "imbecilic" genes that you have the misfortune of harbouring. Thank you.

Good points all around: endorsing a system totally depends on the fairness of the system. Gotham City needs Batman, for instance, and we're all glad that John Wayne shot Liberty Valance. And of course there are people who are beyond redemption, like the Joker or James Holmes, for reasons of either nature or nurture or both. And we shouldn't be blind to evidence of current risks. But to presume that someone will behave badly without good evidence to that effect is a nasty way to live.

Thanks for engaging!

Well, I agree with you that they should be reintegrated. I don't mind giving the person the gift. I just wanted to know if I should report them or not.

Absolutely report them! If they've already been suspended for it, nothing will happen; and if they haven't but deserve to, hopefully Support will do what's appropriate.

I check all my winners for non activated wins and ask for a reroll when one of them has non activated wins that are not too old. In a matter of hours, support always end up suspending and rerolling, or telling me that the user is clean.

  1. Add winner.
  2. "Congrats on winning! I need to ask though, have you ever been suspended on SteamGifts?"
  3. "OF COURSE NOT! Why?"
  4. "OK, great."
  5. Reroll.

If you ask for a reroll and specify your concerns, support will determine if the person is still a qualified winner and let you know.

I've reported things I've found, for which people had already been given "timeouts" in the past apparently. At those times, the staff in charge left a quick note it was already done before, when closing the ticket.

did those take the usual time of weeks/months to get closed or did you get the information faster?

I've had reports go months backlogged before closing them myself, so the timeframe is similar.

Typically less than a day if the report is in a reroll request

I'm sorry for hijacking this thread, but I just made some giveaways and it seems like one of the winners has not activated some of his previous giveaways. Should/can I ask for a reroll because of this? I used sgtools and I also checked my self. Also the last time he didn't activate was a year ago, but should I still ask for a reroll? (I haven't sent the gift yet)

Edit: So when I click the reroll button I can choose "did not activate win in last month" as an option. Since the not activated wins are more than a month back, I guess I can't reroll? Please help Guys =/

You can ask for a reroll. Even if the non activated wins are older than a month, you'll get a reroll if the user hasn't been suspended yet.

It works like this :

  • the user has some non activated wins and has never been suspended for those : the giveaway is rerolled
  • the user has some non activated wins and has already been suspended for those, and the last non activated win was less than a month ago : the giveaway is rerolled
  • the user has some non activated wins and has already been suspended for those, and the last non activated win is older than a month : the giveaway isn't rerolled

Also, one last question: I know the support has lots of stuff to do. How long do you think it takes for a reroll to be processed?

Not long at all, usually 1-2 hours
