Well I just wanted to get my friend a copy of GTA 5 and I found a guy who was selling it for keys. The gift wasn't tradable and he agreed to go first and gift it to me. I traded him the keys and few hours after that the gift dissapeared from my inventory, it has been revoked probably. So have been left out without my keys and without a gift, going to steam support is useles because this : " Items or gifts exchanged in separate trades are not eligible for restoration." or maybe I can still get my keys if I file a report on steam support ?

Do you trust people that they won't revoke their gifts at some point ?

Well you can try it, but don't hope too much. The new trading policy is shit.

Sorry about your loss, I wish you good luck.

There's not really much you can do besides contacting support and wasting some time. I'd recommend you to try your luck.

Considering the state of current steam support I would wait a month for a automated bot to respond like : "We can not assist you, Sorry but not sorry, you are on your own" LOL. I already accepted the fact that I won't get my keys or the gift back. Life huh?

It has something to do with stuff being bought with stoled credit cards. That's the only way afaik, tho how it works exactly, no idea.

Wouldn't their account be suspended ?

You need to report the user for 'Attempted scam attempt' in their steam profile, if you want there to be a reliable chance of Valve actually suspending them.

Or contacting your bank and telling them that the charge was fraudulent? Could work, though stolen credit cards are the usual suspect in these cases. Just came up with that theory since some have done chargebacks with Green Man Gaming just because they haven't read carefully in which currency the game prices have been when they have bought them (dollars vs canadian / australian dollars).

It has something to do with a chargeback on a credit card, if I recall correctly.

I remember reading that before the refund system, people that did a chargeback on games they didn't like/want would get banned instantly by Steam. Not sure if that still applies or if it was true.

So I guess that he buys a copy of the game, gift it and get the keys from the victim and then refund it witout getting suspended ? Well damn. I guess Valve should check on accounts that do a lot of refunds.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not a refund. Through the refund system that's currently in place, the gift recipient would need to be the one to initiate the refund ticket and allow them to remove it from their account. Then the original buyer would be refunded.

That's why I'm assuming it's a chargeback, which is a bannable offense.

I suppose they do that with dummy accounts, no reason to do that with an account with some higher value stuff on them.

I think gifts can be revoked. I heard somewhere that sender can ask steam to revoke if he proves that he get nothing in return of gift. sokol251 can't prove that he traded so it was easier for scammer to prove that he didn't get anything in return.

When you sent him the keys steam asked if you were expecting nothing in return and you said yes. I don't think they will revoke it for you.

I don't really have money to buy it from sites or steam directry, that's why i put A LOT of time in trading. I even got my steam level that way, by getting all small little games with cards and then farming them. Well RIP keys. I'm sorry about your loss.

I just talk with people and give there profiles a rundown and can usually pick off the scammers. I didn't see a reply to your trade thread so just accepting random adds is a good way to get scammed. People sketch over private profiles but I don't mind them as once they add you can take a look and get a feel for them. But random adds are definitely instantly sketchy. I also find CS GO players with lots of hours and LV5 and BG to be super sketchy most of time but that's just from personal experience.

It wouldn't hurt to try Steam support but I wouldn't count on it. Sorry to here you got scammed, it happens to some of the best eventually just try to be alert next time and hopefully your loss wasn't so bad.

Damn that somehow makes it worst. Did you add the guy in the Steam Trading forums? Because there is one guy who is a known scammer that does this. His profile makes him look pretty legit too if you don't dig properly. Has stuff listed like Fallout 4, Battlefront Origins, GTA V, StarCraft Legacy of the Void. I hope you weren't another one of his victims because that guy has gotten quite a few people.

Well you should have found someone who had a copy that could be traded, most likely they did a charge back or they knew it was stolen and they want to fence it,this is why games should not be able to send a gift of an item that can not be traded for x amount of days.If you want to gift it then you should send it as a gift during purchase to person or email if you opt not to,then you can not trade it at all for said amount of days.

Never ever send keys or items outside of trading window or send items first unless you really know the person and are willing to risk losing items. The only time i will take a risk is trading bundle game for a bundle game i will most likely go first if everything checks out.In mostt cases the cost of the item most people are not going to be bothered with scamming and two if i do most likely its worth very little and the loss is so low it is not worth worrying about.

Trying --------> Small chance of success
Not trying --------> 100% chance of failure
Simple as that. Yes, you should open a ticket on steamsupport, report him with proof, and ask them if it's possible to get back your keys. Also, report him on steamrep and -rep him on steamgifts. If he also has a profile on tf2outpost, report him there too. Just don't let him get away with it. Good luck.

There is plenty of ways to not become scammed, it's a shame but all you can do is post reports here and there to prevent others for making same mistake dealing with this guy, but as you see there is no point in writing to support since they washed their hands long time ago, claiming all restrictions are for safety reasons while all they are doing is support scamming and having clean hands by saying "you trading ? go f. yourself then" unfortunately. Its a shame you got scammed so wish you more luck in future.

I don't get it... if one person can revoke a "gift" why can't the other. Honestly, if he can pull the GTA license, why can't you pull the access to the keys? Someone is going to have to 'splain this one to me.

Oh, also worth noting... the license may have been bogus to begin with, and it could have been revoked by the publisher. Either way it would be likely the person involved knew about it, but it would be possible they did not either. Is there any definitive way to know whether the user revoked the license or if it was Steam at the publisher's request?

I know I had a license revoked for a Kinguin purchase like four or five years ago, and Steam told me that the publisher had pulled it. However that took weeks to get a response... wondering if you can find out quicker these days or if there are more efficient methods than Steam support (and I realize that is not a high standard).

If a fradulent credit card had been used to buy fradulent gifts and the card owner then chargeback the money, Steam will automatically revoke all the gifts associated with the card. Steam Support will restore all the items ASSOCIATED with the fradulent gift, thus if he sent you the gift and you sent him keys in seperate manners, your keys are as good as gone, I'm sorry :(

Add the Enhanced Steam extension to your browser, it'll add useful links on user's profiles.
But most likely the scammer isn't registered here, and impersonated someone else to "steal" their reputation.

Also, nice necroposting, this thread died 6 months ago... although we seriously need some anti-scammer guide stickied.

If you have the serial that steam assigns to every profile, you can simply use:
www.steamgifts.com/go/user/ "serial"

For instance:
www.steamgifts.com/go/user/76561198034451372

Goes straight to your profile. If said person does not have a steamgifts account, you'll be directed straight to the home page.

If you do not know their serial but do know the custom url, the you can use a tool such as https://steamdb.info/calculator/ to find them. I also recommend reporting said user to https://steamrep.com/ who keep track of scammers.

Sorry this happened to you and best of luck in the future.
