You'd probably get more out of it if you haven't played either Witcher 2 or 3.

I've played a couple of hours of Witcher 1 but not the others. It was fun and I plan on returning to it some day. It's a bit more linear than the other games, so don't expect something like a TES open world.

Haven't played 2/3, but i got the 2 on my steam a long time ago.
I'm considering to buy it for real. It's a pity that isnt an open world, but i guess i can deal with that =p
thx

The story is so amazing (for me) that I did not even realise when 50 hours passed. I was not bothered about the open world at all to be honest. And maybe that is the only bad thing I noticed in the game. except when it came out and I first tried to play it where there was a bug that did not allow me to play after a point in the game.

But 2 years ago that I tried again it was perfect with no noticeable bugs

It's a good story game if you get used to gameplay fast you'll love it. The combat system in the first one isn't that great but it's survivable.

I dropped it a couple of years ago because of the awkward combat, but played it again and finished after finishing Witcher 2.
My opinion: it should be played to learn more of the whole Witcher story and its characters, not for the gameplay.

No, but if you're interested in story then yes, about gameplay, big no.

I love all Witcher games, but be warned that the first Witcher has a very different combat system than most RPGs. It takes some time to get used to. Some people don't like it, give it some time and see if it grows on you XD. I would suggest you play 2 and if you have the money 3. Witcher 2 is great, but 3 is amazing!

You should play first to better understand storyline in next ones. Well, you should also read books, because game story takes place after the books scenario, but game is still playable and you will catch with story even without them.

I read somewhere this exactly, they are based on a book and there are like 3 books that you should read before playing, didnt read the books or playing myself, its in queue xD

No, there were 7 books: two with short tales and 5 with main story (witch taking place after those two). Lately Sapkowski wrote another book (like 2 years ago), but that isn't "affected" game storyline for obvious reasons.

Oh, i thought that only 3 "affect" the first game, thanks for the info :)

Well, "the third" was in 5 tomes but also available as one(I think, didn't saw it in that form, but heard about it), I suppose, so you are somewhat right. Ah, the stories from fisrt two tomes are base (with characters and such) to "pentateuch"!

Play it, but don't forget to set camera to the top-down view. The game looks better this way, and early development videos show that's the way it was intended to play.

Story is amazing, if you'll get to survive first somewhat 2 hours with that combat system you'll have an amazing experience in front of you in which you'll sink into.

It's a lot better than 2 or 3. Actually just play the first one, 2 and 3 are bad ( please don't kill me, it's merely my opinion ).

The Witcher 1 hooked me. Branching paths, different endings, decisions and whatnot (GOG DRM. I only recently bought it on steam along with TW2). I'd say it was well worth it but if you don't have the kind of patience to stick with it, it may not be for you. It goes the same for the trilogy actually. If you've already played TW2/TW3 and only now just decided to play TW1, the combat system is vastly different. OH and if no animated sex scenes are a deal breaker, well..yeah there are no animated sex scenes in TW1. Just some nice looking nude(?)/boudoir cards instead of cutscenes. But that's just a minor thing.

I'am playing it right now, it is 2nd time in fact 1st time i didn't complete it ~2years ago and now i decided to beat it so far i'am happy with the game, combat may be strange/weird etc but it's easy to understand and get used to it, so yeah buy it great RPG with a lot of hours to spend in. I'am playing on hardest difficulty and i love it. Buy it.

It's alright, I started playing it as my laptop struggled to run the second one and the story is its strong point so it's useful to playthrough if you plan to play the others. I never did finish it though, I think I stopped around the middle due to a bit too much running backwards and forwards between locations but there's plenty to enjoy if you can accept it's not going to be perfect.
