That's good, but
CAN A FRIEND AND I SHARE A LIBRARY AND BOTH PLAY AT THE SAME TIME?
No, a shared library may only be accessed by one user at a time.
= I still have to buy the game twice in order to play it with my girlfriend in co-op; that's lame.

Can all Steam games be shared with friends and family?

No, due to technical limitations, some Steam games may be unavailable for sharing. For example, titles that require an additional third-party key, account, or subscription in order to play cannot be shared between accounts.

So games that have another DRM such as Uplay, Rockstar Social Club, Stardock, and Bioware won't be able to be played I believe. There's probably more but I can't think of much right now...

Also, games like EVE Online and the new FF game which requires monthly subscriptions won't be shared.

But how will it work for MULTIPLAYER GAMES? For example those that require keys or making accounts like TWO WORLDS 2 etc will friends be able to get me banned /steal items from Two Worlds 2 MP etc?or get us banned in VAC games & stuff?:) Better it would be for their steam to create accounts for the multiplayer games even if they dont have it & when they buy the game(s) they use the accounts they played on trough the shared library..Just a thot :) ... Also it would be nice to be able to co-op with people u share the library with...Trine etc :(

If it needs a CD-key or a separate DRM/account info to play the game, they won't be able to play it.

I wonder how will work:
Trading card drops.
Item drops in games like TF2/CS:GO or items which you unlock in Poker night at the inventory.
Achievements.
Cloud saves.
Time played statistics.
"Game owned" in the steamgifts point of view.

Games that come to mind are - all that use EA accounts,GFWL,Uplay etc & others that have their own multiplayer keys and/or accounts :)

So my ideea of Vouching is also applied?XD i see :P . Tough now that i think bout it ,you can't ALWAYS know ALL the "good friends" you have & share games to :P
quote by a classic alive (<--- me ofc) "Social life is for fake friends" & now i underline the FAKEFRIENDS xD :P . They should erm banhammer or stuff like that all the cheaters that borrow games & not the friends they ahve the games from and if you say they can make new accounts, there are ways to track them and heck if they want even track them with the Police to their ISP etc ;) depending on how serious they hack the game servers for multiplayer etc.

That is kind of cool. Though it only works for those who are willing to take turns on the account. Those who do not want to do that are S.O.L.

I don't understand the point... I might as well share my information with my family and just let them login...I guess this is good if you have trust issues or bad friends/family.

it's also more convenient for them to set up a separate account since then you won't have to worry about passwords in case it's compromised. and they can use steam community features... etc.

(you should use steamguard.)

If the game use single save file, your family won't messed up your save file. They even get their own achievement and progress.

So... this is dumb... i play games everyday and if my sister wants to play GMOD then i can't play a single game on my game list? NOT even the single player games?

THEN WHY are this even a function if i'm not going to be able to play! >_>

You can play whatever the hell you want. If the person that is "borrowing" your game is playing when you decide to play the same game, they get bumped off. Owner will always be able to play his game whenever.

No, if you read the FAQ and read valve respond, we are sharing a whole library and any game can't be played by my family if I am playing any other games.
So, yeah, it's not as great as it sounds.

Quemical's reply is correct. Although you share your entire library, the lender has precedence over the borrowers in terms to accessing games from their own library.

yeah the system is redundant though, if I sat down to a 24hr stint of BL2 then no one else in the house could game during that time... whats the point?

Can the person borrowing the game play the game while the lender is online, but not playing a game? Wish they shed some more light on this

Yes you can be online but if the other person is playing YOU CAN'T play games at any cost!

Really wonder how they will handle VAC bans with this system in place. If a family member/friend cheats while playing a borrowed copy of a game, it would obviously be extremely unfair to ban the owner of the game.

... but I can see a problem arising unless they do that. Cheaters could just buy a game, then share and play it on fake accounts. That way they could keep on cheating with zero risk of loosing the game or getting a permanent VAC ban on their main account.

It's going to be interesting to see how they actually implement this feature.

They stated that if the borrower commits offenses, the lender could have his library sharing privileges revoked.

I'd prefer lending of single titles and not the whole library. Only 1 account/device can play a game of that library at a given time.
But cool enough for now :).

I'm sorry I just can't do it... can we all please post in the same thread? I mean do these really need to be new topics?: This and this.

Think before you start a new topic please!

Edit: sorry to be a party pooper but I spend alota time in forums that have pretty strict standards, I understand its a bit more relaxed here but lately browsing the forum has started to become a bit toxic."

I think that will create a space/time continuum breach and the entire world will collapse in a big black hole..
On a side note I think asking on the group will provide you an answer..sometime...

As an additive to this... If you can play at the same time as a friend (which I highly doubt) what's the possibility you could play it together in multiplayer / co-op?

EDIT: scrub that, you can't.

FAQs: When I authorize a device to lend my library to others, do I limit my own ability to access and play my games?
As the lender, you may always access and play your games at any time. If you decide to start playing when a friend is already playing one of your games, he/she will be given a few minutes to either purchase the game or quit playing.

Also: **Can a friend and I share a library and both play at the same time?***
No, a shared library may only be accessed by one user at a time.

I think you missed what I was saying. The FAQ answer was answering something I knew.

I meant.

Can I play my friend's library of games while they play my library of games? Cross sharing I guess would be the word.
And it seemed the answer to this is still not known.

Is this thing LOCAL (computers in the same house)? Or digital (me and a friend far away from my actual position)? We still don't get it

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is semi-local, you have to approve a device on which other users can use your library, for example, I walk to my brothers PC, login with my steam account and then approve his PC as a family sharing device, log out, then my brother can login with his account and play games in my library, have his separate saves and achievements, so in other words if you want to share your library with people far away, you still have to give them your login information at least once.
