The point system was updated with a few tweaks. It seems like the general consensus is that everyone has too many points, and they're able to enter a high number of giveaways without focusing their attention to those of higher interest.

  • When a giveaway is setup, all users, excluding the creator, now receive 5% of the gift's value in points. For example, a game valued at $9.99 would give everyone 0.5 points, while a $50 gift would provide everyone with 2.5 points.
  • Although your points are rounded in the top navigation, they're now tracked to one decimal place.

We'll test it out for a week, and see how it goes. The goal is to find the perfect balance, that helps to give everyone the best odds to win a game they're excited to play.

An extremely strict system needs to be set up to ban anyone who makes fake giveaways! Usually FRAUDSTERS are able to be easily tricked into doing things that majorly violate STEAMS EULA or whatever and they lose their account, BUT I can't chase down every n00b and it can be time consuming. So, if we could just give them a chance to fix it

People should also have to giveaway a game to activate their account with the ability to enter giveaways.

AUDITS! Gamers who win a giveaway and then who are not found to have even played the game will subsequently be banned unless they giveaway 2 games of equal or lesser value. Their could be a time delay of a week to a month.

Anyone who types like they have Downs Syndrome e.g. "How r u doing? OMG Hai! So nice 2 c u sk8erboi cul8r boi" or any person who creates a single sentence with >3 words spelled improperly = BAN unless of course, a game is given away.

Also RUSSIAN...posting a single Russian character forces you to live in a tundra filled wasteland where dreams die before they are born and the only comfort comes from the bottom of a bottle of potato vodka.

I'd also like to be able to link accounts so that my bro and I could link our accounts to give games away under both our names. Right now we just use his account to giveaway and he'll just buy me something of value if he wins on his account. Linking might be a bit confusing though....oh well.

all users, excluding the creator, now receive 5% of the gift's value in points

Does the gifter receive a different percentage, or no points at all? Is this a new change or has the gifter always received a different percentage/no points and I'm just behind?

yah they dont get any points...I think the idea is to stop fake giveaways. Gifting a game should be its own reward anyway so I like it

I think quite the opposite. If the creator gets more points than the general populous then they would have more incentive to create the giveaways! And if a person does create a fake giveaway, a system should be in place where the person would get banned, and everyone who entered would get their points back.

To promote healthy growth in game selection and appreciation to those who provide gifts, the creator of the giveaway should benefit.

Agreed. However, we're still trying to figure out the best way to reward contributors. I'm wondering if we could work in the wishlist page. When their gift is marked received, we could send them a certain number of points based on the level of interest for their gift, how unique it is to the site, and the overall value. This way, a user would be better rewarded for gifting something like Universe Sandbox, a $10 game that's found on a large number of wishlists, compared to another copy of Dirt 3, even though it's valued higher.

+1 This! Best idea of the week!

Edit: If this is going to be implemented. Private giveaways should be excluded otherwise it could be easily abused: make a private giveaway; don't share the link to no one; only person who joins is you on a secondary account; you win(doh! you're the only one); then you click gift received; Rinse and repeat.

I have a possible solution for implementing this: Give the gifter a certain (unsure how much) percentage of the total points/ballots accrued by the raffle. Since a greater demand for the game would naturally mean that more people spend their points on it, it would adequately reward the gifter on a scale according to how much the community was in want of that specific game. Give a (smaller) percentage of total points cost accrued by the raffle if you want their reward/incentive/tanks increased based on the cost of the game they decided to gift (after all, they invested more/ were more generous/ whatever), or simply a percentage of the ballots submitted if you want it based solely on community demand.

I agree. I also wonder if the reason for the fake giveaways is the 10% of the point value or creating a point sink for everyone else's points so the creator has a better chance to win geniune giveaways. If it's the latter then it should be safe to reward the creator with 10% of the point value.

Just a thought.

This is the first thing that came to my head when i read that gifters don't get any points. I was going to giveaway a 30 dollar game but then i realized that the only thing i would receive in exchange is the good feeling of helping other people, but no points. I was interested in getting points too.

Here's hoping that the new system works. I like the idea of gifters receiving a benefit once the gift is received.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Granted, I am new here, so my opinion doesn't carry much heft. I think the gifter should be rewarded with something for adding into the system. Why give away games to strangers if nothing is gained. Granted, being philanthropic is its own reward, but I'm sure a few added points will also tempt those in it for personal gain.

That being said, if the issue is about fake giveaways being abused to gain free points, then add in a verification process and for those who fail it should be reviewed and subsequently banned if fowl play is afoot. If that is too harsh, you could put in a three strike rule.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The problem is it isn't very easy to verify if the gift is valid or not until it is received. Once it's received I like CG's idea of getting a bonus reward depending on how many people wanted the game.

Ok, idea time: I put up a $30 game. /so long as it isn't private/ when the giveaway ends & I give the game, the recipient marks it rec'd & I get double? points. This way the giver only gets points when (s)he actually gives the game, can't game the system because no private & the giver has (more) incentive to give.

So this changes nothing for the invites right? The points required are computed by the points generated which derives from that 5% right?

I don't like this system, because it does not actually solve the flood problem. Once, there is a HIB4 flood (or some other free giveaway like Dirt3), those, who has those already will get lots of extra points. And to make it enough as it was in the previous system, we'll just get twice as much HIBs...
also if i have 2 accounts, i can share HIBs from one account and get points on the other.
hope, that is just a temporrary solution, untill a better solition is online.

It shouldn't make any difference since the relation is always 5% of the points in gift value.
Whether there is 5 million dollars worth of giveaways of $50, the proportion of points available is always at the same level relative to gifts.

If I would want every game that I see in the Steam store, I would want around 900 more games than I do now, ergo your argument is idiotic.
To crush your argument even more, I'll add what games I do add to my wishlist:
Games that I would complete at least once,
Games that I would spend hours playing.

And to crush the left-overs of your argument into small, small, dust-like pieces - not everyone loves gaming and/or PCs, therefore not everybody wants to play many games. There are a lot of great and beautiful games, as I discovered recently. :)
Feel crushed yet or do you need another bus thrown at you?

It MIGHT be plenty when you have double the points I have, and doesn't seem to care much about games. Although I think that you wouldn't say no to more points. :P
Besides, why shouldn't I write what I think (taking in account that other people with the same opinion did), a comment on the topic? I never intended for anything to change, or do you think I did?

I like this more than the the current rules, and I'm not really feeling what good lowering the percentage count has done. Somebody on SA said it best - "I'd rather enter 100 giveaways I can't win than 5."

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Keep in mind, the odds of winning always stay the same. What changes is how many gifts you distribute those odds across. For example, you choose 100 gifts to place in one hat, and 5 gifts to place in another. You're able to pull one gift from a hat. Which do you choose? Without question, most people would draw from the hat with 5 gifts, because they're guaranteed to get a game they're more interested in. It's the same with the point system. Would you rather enter 100 giveaways, each with 100 entries, or 5 giveaways, each with 5 entries. By lowering the percentage, we focus those odds on a smaller number of gifts. In short, you win the same amount of time, but better gifts.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, the odds of winning always stay the same. So I choose the 100 giveaways, because the five giveaways with five entries don't exist and never will.

Permalink

So basically you don't want to win a game you'd like, you want to win a giveaway?

Permalink

I don't enter giveaways for games I don't want to play. I never have. There aren't even enough points to go around for these mysterious boogeyman who are entered in every single giveaway to even exist. For some reason you people seem to believe that easy accumulation of points is the problem with the site rather than a bloated userbase.

On the contrary, sometimes I think I'm the only one here who doesn't have an entitlement complex. Point out where I bitched about not winning giveaways and as Orson Welles once said, I'll go down on you.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I suspect the problem is the proportion of people leeching free gifts to those contributing. The largest balance issue is that this system appears to reward greed rather than generosity. Before you know it people are somehow upset that they didn't get enough free stuff, or enough opportunities for free stuff.

Some algorithm that distributes points a little more balanced based on contributions, or at least creates tiers, might be reasonable. That way there is an incentive to give to the community and not just take what you can and run.

I haven't seen anybody address this, or attempt to (I'm new though, this is a cursory observation), but I look forward to seeing how it is addressed.
