Because some people make a life out of playing victims for not being able to victimize others anymore I guess.
They just don't see the irony in constantly bitching about other people being "too easily offended".
That or they feel people being able to live their lives as they really are without fear is somehow taking something away from their own lives.

I get that contemporary political correctness can be annoying and sometimes so contradictory that it makes no sense. But aren't you just complaining for the sake of it? I mean, is much better to have this discussions out in the open than the old way of stomping on any subject matter found uncomfortable, the only real issue is how sensitive people have become and how easily they get offended.
Now, because I apparently have no self preservation instinct, I'm gonna share a couple of opinions:
In my eyes the immigration problem is not that people move to a different country but that most countries do an awful job at integrating said people. Instead of asimilating them into the culture as fast as possible so their children would be true locals they are segregated and allowed to remain as a small, closed subculture with a poor sense of belonging to the place where they live. When an individual arrives they should be set into a path that will merge their identity with that of the country they now reside, just dump all ingridients into a single pot and stirr that fucker untill you can't make out where a thing ends and the next starts.
And about the damn gender thing, the only thing even resembling a shard of proper understanding that I've managed to achieve so far is that it is too complicated and sometimes even counterproductive due to the way it is normally presented. At this point I'd rather just try to get rid of the whole concept of gender all together and see if it makes things easier, after all, the only part somewhat necesary is to keep a basic separation of biological sex so kids can understand reproduction properly, other than that we might as well abandon gender roles and allow people to just search for their identity on their own. I've been stuck in limbo for years now trying to figure out if I'm straight, bi, gay or whatever (while also struggling to drag myself out of a depression hole I digged myself into) so I can't even begin to imagine how confusing and anxiety filled trying to find out what gender you identify as might be. Give those guys a break.
And now I prepare myself for the blacklisting that tends to happen every time I express an opinion here.

Oh right, I almost forgot, what does the end of the world has to do with all of that?

You have said it nicely, but I wonder, what if they don't want to asimilate? You know many of them (not all!) just come to another country, another culture, religion, principles.... and they want to stay the same way they are. They don't learn the language, don't respect the country law, the differences in thinking.... I don't know how about US but in Europe they are allowed to be like that, because they have the rights to keep their culture and religion. And as we can see it's not doing any good. They are hardly forced to change, more likely they are changing their surroundings and everyone make concessions to them, because they are afraid that they would be called racist or xenophobic or something like that.
I believe that when you are going to another country, just visiting or to live, you should respect and honor them.

People who don't want to change anything and refuse their part of the integration, hurt themselves in the long run. Of course they're allowed to, because you can't force someone to get friends of another culture etc. As long as they aren't committing crimes, they'll stay. But they won't get a better job if any at all, they won't learn the local language, they don't learn other aspects of the local society. And as more immigrants become well integrated, the more they would want to as well (even if it's only for more money).

Against my better judgement, I have to ask:
"England still having unarmed policemen..."
How on earth can you have the slightest impression that this has a negative effect on your life? The overwhelming majority of citizens and police officers do not want more armed units, and the UK has an average of about 1 gun death a year for every million citizens. That's a pretty damned spectacular statistic. The system is working just fine - and even if it wasn't, how is it any of your concern?

Well, there are some videos on the net which show English police unable to safely handle a potentially dangerous situation... but you probably know what I am talking about already. Anyway, while I agree that the English model has it's benefits and sounds very nice, in theory, I wouldn't exactly call it "working just fine" right now..

Permalink

Have you never seen videos of heavily armed American police handling a situation in a catastrophically inappropriate way? In any case, internet videos are thankfully not, to date, decisive in policy making.

And if a bleach eliminated 99.9999% of bacteria you wouldn't say it was working just fine? You, sir, have exacting standards.

What is your point? It's okay to fuck up, as long as others fuck it up more?
I have probably seen those vids as well, but how is that relevant? Oh, wait. It's not.

If I were you I would take those "internet videos" a tad bit more serious. People in England watch those. They notice. And they can vote, it's still a democracy, right? I mean, a sad joke of a democracy in my book, but still..

Just pay a visit to some random forum on the web frequented by Englishers and you will probably see it as well.

You were implying that the English model of only arming specialist units was obviously not good enough, because you've seen internet videos of situations when it worked badly. I was pointing out that this argument is flawed, by referencing the globally renowned, systemic problems in the heavily armed police forces of the US - as extensively documented via internet videos.

When you say "It's okay to fuck up, as long as others fuck it up more?" you even seem to be acknowledging that the UK system is functioning better than the US system - but if you recognise that, it would seem illogical or outright contradictory to suggest that the UK model would automatically be better if it was closer to that of the US.

Finally: I don't need to base my understanding of the English on the impression I get from random people on internet forums. I'm English.

You are focusing on the distractions of daily life instead of "the Big Picture." It is not your job to save the world. It is your job to believe in your Creator, try your best to do what is right and avoid what is wrong, and to be constant in that for whatever amount of time remains to you. You are responsible for your own behavior, not that of everyone else.

Permalink

Of course we are not responsible for the actions of others. But does that mean we should not care about what happens in the world? If more people cared about climate change and a million other things that go wrong in this world instead of minding their own business, we probably wouldn't be in as much trouble as we are. Praying to any of the available creators obviously doesn't reduce pollution. ;)

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Khalaq didn't say you should not care, just not trouble yourself about others, while you do your best. You can not control others. You can guide them by giving information, educate them to make them see, and if they can, accept that there are issues with Earth that are shared and affecting everyone. You can't do that with passive-aggressive comments on a completely unrelated, small community.

And on a more grim note, civilians can't do much against pollution unless everyone collectively turns their back on fossile-based fuels, plastics, modern medicine (They create tenfold of the pollution / kg product than oil refineries), and basically every industry from food to beauty products, and development/growth. When the US or China refuses to sign limitations on CO2 output they basically cancel out every improvement other parts of the world are achieving,
With the current politics being pressured by various lobbies, honestly it's pretty unlikely to be changed. But unless one plans to blow up the congress or bomb a country back to the rock age,it's impossible to change it on the personal level. Either you start a party / lobby to improve on the situation, join one that exists, or wait until the situation comes and you can make a difference - likely by voting. With this we're back to the original quote.
And I say this as someone who's writing their thesis for masters, are super stressed, have some issues with family, is a bit anxious about finding a job in a few months, and honestly, sometimes I feel on the verge of panic how the current state of world politics is similar to the political climate before The Great War and WW2. But I can't do anything against Trump destroying the reputation of US, protecting and making friends with dictators, Brazil's new President, not even Putin aggressive steps against a country that is a neighbour of mine. Hell, not even against my own PM who spreads bullshit, manipulated the election districts to gain more votes and hinder others. Voted against him, can take part on demonstrations.
There are many things that would worth caring about intensively, but I can't afford to be more of a nervous wreck. Many things worth following and being informed but not really be included.

But does that mean we should not care about what happens in the world?

The one does not preclude the other. In fact, caring, by itself, does not solve problems. Taking action solves problems. That is why I mentioned "trying your best to do what is right." Action is necessary.

"No matter how many people complain about sitting in the dark, it won't turn the lights on. However, if every person solemnly resolved to flip that switch, the lights were certainly be turned on by someone. Actions speak louder than words."

It's not even about 'right' or 'left' anymore. Heck, everyone in my family is on the same 'side' politically and we're all close. And yet, lately, we are so divided. My father can't accept any opinion but his own, my mother takes most disagreements as a sign of hate or insult -- and even when we're not talking about politics! It might not be the end of the world but it sure is the end of civil discussions with my family, that's for sure :(

I think trying to have empathy and compromising is key. It's just that when negative emotions are running high and everyone feels attacked, no one likes to compromise because a win-win starts to look a lot more like a lose-lose. Scary times for us all.

The end of the mayan calendar was not about the end of the world, but the transition to a new position of the solar system on the galaxy, we are getting a bit near the center of the galaxy following the ellipse cycle of our solar system, the mayans warned that this transition would drive people more anxious, depresive, irritated, extremist, etc. Sounds familiar?

Trump didn't order the military to kill anyone, he said they could protect Border Patrol agents from being injured or killed with force.. If people are trying to immigrate to your nation, the last thing they should be doing is getting violent or trying to injure or kill agents trying to keep them out until their due process can be finished.. As for the rest of what you put, some of them are like, meh, others are like, yah, still others are like deh.. BTW I'm neither a Trump supporter or basher, just someone who understands how the US constitution works, including the US immigration policy..
