Like a collapse button, except instead for the comments, it would be for the discussion? Interesting idea, but not very useful. If you don't want to go back to a thread, you'll remember the title.

I have a lot of threads I don't want to go back to :) And each time I load up the discussions section, I often end up reading the same titles numerous times.
Think email threads. There are some I still want to follow up on or reply to, but many that I just want to archive and not have sitting in my inbox when I look at a list with 20+rows at a time.

Try this http://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/7euKx/steamgifts-beta-updated-030-now-includes-popup-giveaway-user-tagging
And enable Track Comments

So I got the script and enabled track comments. How do I segregate the threads I no longer have interest in?

After using it for a week now, it's much more useful when viewing individual comments as you can scan through them all and just pick out the ones in the tier that are red flagged as new. Thanks for the tip to try it out.
However, I've not found it useful for browsing thread titles. It marks threads I've already read with new comments quite visibly, but I may or may not want to continue reading those threads. And threads without a red box can either be threads I haven't yet viewed or threads that I have viewed with no new comments. So I still have to read all the thread titles each time I browse discussions. On average out of 20 thread titles read, I am only interested in 4 (gross generalization). It would be great to flag the other 16 so I don't keep reading them.

True, you can 'forget this topic' so the red number doesn't show up but other than that I don't know. You could always make a suggestion to the developers of SG++ or maybe there's something in the other add-ons for you. Anyway, I hope you can find what you are looking for. Bump with hypothetical: If I go away for 6 hours, I come back to find about 100 discussion threads active during that time (either new replies or freshly created). So I have a whole page full of discussions to filter through. I'm only interested in opening a couple of those threads, but I have to skim through 100 thread title lines to find the 5 titles I'm interested in. It would be useful to have some way to mark the other 95 so I don't read through their titles again.
I know this isn't a high priority. Would others find this useful as well?

Necro-ing this.
I was going to make a similar post, but of course I searched first. ^-^
I am obsessive–compulsive so sometimes I exhaust myself really hard because of my constant need to keep refreshing discussions and inevitably reading every single thread title there is.
This will really make my life easier. ;c

I'd like the ability to flag discussions as something I don't intend to return to (already read as much as I wanted, not interested in the topic, in an ancient blood feud with the author, whatever reason). It's not a big deal, but I figured I'd put a suggestion out there for convenience and see if it got any traction.
All discussions that I flag would then either be clearly noted on the discussions list so I can skip over them as I browse topics, or simply moved down with the closed discussions for viewing purposes. By clearly noted it could be as simple as greying out the text, tinting the background color, changing the font to italics, anything that is easily noticeable. Personally, I prefer they just get moved to the bottom of the list.
