In the current version, it's actually...
Settings --> Scan --> Advanced Settings --> Full Scan Settings --> Additional Settings --> Scan only new & changed files
Then choose...
Files scanned by format. File Anti-Virus will scan only the files that can be potentially infected (.exe, .dll, or .com) using the analysis of their internal headings (txt, doc, exe).
That will significantly speed up scan times.

The only way you did a full scan in 3 hours with Avast and then 9 hours to do it with Kaspersky was you used a custom scan with Avast or your PC was under heavier load while you were scanning with Kaspersky. I have a feeling by your comments you actually kept Avast on your system while you installed and used Kaspersky.

I prefer ot live in the past, it's much more predictable.

Kaspersky has just released their Windows antivirus software completely free with no ads or nagging unlike some competitors. You get all the basic antivirus functionality and then stuff like parental controls is in the full version.
They are slowly rolling it out so your region of the globe might not have it available yet. Here's the link for USA/Canada: https://usa.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus
As long as you're not under investigation for collusion with Russia, or the ones investigating collusion with Russia, this is probably a good deal. :)
