Hi SG,

After the recent discussion, updates to the point system are now live. They are as follows:

  1. Users receive 5 points every 15 minutes.
  2. The point cap has been increased from 300 to 500 points.
  3. The maximum number of points to enter a single giveaway has been decreased from 100 to 50 points.

I think these adjustments will provide a number of improvements for the site. However, I'll keep an eye on user feedback, and try to make sure the changes are working as intended and meeting the needs of the community.

This update will filter the bots out, as only them can use the points optimally. I think cg is preparing for Bot Hunting.

So now that points are so scarce, the best use of points is to join these 1 hour giveaways, putting more pressure than before to refresh the page every hour in order to not miss out. Wasn't that a behavior you wanted to eliminate?

Also, your response to the ever-increasing number of giveaways is to reduce drastically the points earned?

The only good thing is the new point cap.

No "Oh, new bundle ?" joy, no rush to spend the point after a big amount of drop...
Now the website is more like an appointment, every 1-2 days, that at a certain point we won't even pay attention and leave...

Big NO for me.

I have no problem with the second and third parts, but the first causes more problems than it supposedly solves.

Ideally point generation should be based upon a multiplier calculated from your sent/won ratio (either raw or real).

I would love to see it personally, because it would make winning by auto-joiners and extreme leechers waaay more difficult...while giving the more generous members here an ample supply of points to enter as many wishlisted games as they'd like. It would solve a lot of problems without negatively impacting those with decent ratios...and would provide a compelling incentive for members to actually do more giveaways...resulting in a robust and healthy community. IMO! : ]

This could be a GREAT idea.

But would it be with the shear number of (low value) games or with an amount of the games worth? ;)

Definitely the games' worth (raw or real)...that would make the most sense.

Personally I think that too many points were being distributed with the old system, but I also think that not enough points are being distributed with the new system.

Here's my suggestion: I suggest that the point distribution should be based on how much points a user would have to spend to theoretically join all active giveaways for their Level. If the user would get like 0.05% - 0.15% of that amount every 15 minutes (4.8% to 14.4% in 24 hours), it might be better than the current system and it would still be easy to understand. That would also mean that users with a higher Level would get more points every 15 minutes. Level 0 users can only join Level 0 giveaways, hence why Level 0 users need less points than Level 1 users. Level 1 users can join Level 0 and Level 1 giveaways, hence why Level 1 users need more points than Level 0 users, but less points than Level 2 users, which can join Level 0, Level 1, and Level 2 giveaways, and so on.

Of course the example amount of % of points distributed every 15 minutes would most likely have to be adjusted because I don't have any statistics of how many active giveaways there are for each Level right now and how much points a user would have to spend to theoretically join all of the active giveaways for their Level.

It makes sense, based on "Per Level" stats: https://www.steamgifts.com/stats/community/giveaways

I think it's a bit too slow, but still an improvement over the dynamic points system.

I like the new system. So people think carefully what giveaways to enter and don't get into everything only because "it's free / has cards / +1".
I hope that one day will be introduced a rules about the number of games that can be won in a week or month

Hey cg, what about a hybrid system, the current system + a small percent of the created GAs?

I would prefer a small percent of the given value.
Quality instead of quantity.

It's impressive how quickly one can ruin a good thing. Can you send out an email to everyone when you change the system back so that we may return?

It's like watered down alcohol-free beer now - no point...

P.S. thanks for helping to break the bad habit that is SG! =D

Changing the system way ok, but you guys went from one extreme to another extreme. On Friday I could join anything, and my points kept accumulating no matter how hard I tried to use them... this was very wrong and irritating. But now it is the opposite... I can only join 1-2 giveaways per hour. Did you guys even consider a half-way option? I do not see that the "recent discussion" warrants this strict system. It seems to me that the admins want things to be as they are now, and they will decide all in the end.

The old system was something unique, I will miss it, but I can accept the new system, it seems to work well.

I had no issues with the old system. This one kinda bothers me a lot. I'm a casual user but I do like spamming into one kind of giveaway if there are 20 or 30 of the same while also putting in towards a few large ones and now I can't. Like a few have already stated, it went from one extreme to another.

No offence, but I think this new system doesn't make any sense. I mean for a website that is just starting or a small community I could understand, but with the amount of users and giveaways on SG it looks like a stingy system (it's even impossible to enter in all wishlisted giveaways, the gap with the old system is really too big) and it will surely affect motivation.

This is good but I'll have to be more discerning which giveaways I enter now.

I love that whenever I check someone complaining how they cannot enter even wishlisted giveaways, they never played at least half of their wins anyway. Considering they are theoretically wishlisted games too, makes you wonder…

I tend to wishlist games I really want to play, but my game time is severely limited as it is.
I really should stay away from the site, but winning games you know you'll play eventually is nice.
