Many of the mods are shared between the two but there are a number that are exclusive to one or the other. It all depends on the developers and where they choose to upload it

As Kon said, some are shared, but nexus would be your best bet. Much wider selection and easier to keep track with the mod manager.

I mod for Skyrim and I use both Steam Workshop (http://steamcommunity.com/id/syclonix/myworkshopfiles/?appid=72850) and Skyrim Nexus for my mods (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/users/59982/?tb=mods&pUp=1).

Although Steam Workshop has a larger audience, it's targeted more towards the lowest common denominator which means mods on Steam Workshop have limitations that mods on Nexus don't. So you generally get more complex mods available on Nexus.

If you're willing to do a little bit more work to learn how to install mods using Nexus Mod Manager and BOSS I would definitely go with Nexus first before Steam Workshop. FYI if you just subscribe to Steam Workshop mods without paying attention to load order you're bound to get lots of conflicts.

^ What he says. Plus you can get more "adult" themed mods on Nexus ... and you know, some of you people like those. guilty look

I like more to use Nexusmods because of the easy to use mod manager D: Also, there is a much bigger and complex selection of mods D:
