Windows 10 or Windows 7? OR Windows 8 (haha, just kidding. Everyone hates it.)
two things, after 98se MS stopped caring about backward compatibility somewhat so you are better off getting as much mileage out of your win 7 system as possible on win 7 and earlier games.
the other issue is each new version of windows lags more than the previous one, it might be part of a conspiracy to keep individuals from accessing the full power of their supercomputers and taking over the world, or just that someone at MS may be mining bitcoins on everyone's pcs in the background....

windows dosen't want compatibility as much anymore because there is a linux app called wine which seeks to make windows obsolete, so windows needs to be a moving target.
back with 98se i used to use linux to delete and put back system dlls to clear stuff out of the task manager that windows wouldn't let me kill from within windows, and see how much I could remove without the system crashing or it interfering with my gaming, amazing how much faster deleting about 3 dlls made a system, been a while so I don't remember off the top of my head which one's they were but they usually had "server" somewhere in one of the properties info tabs. there would be a missing dll window when a game launched then the game would run beautifully..
What those dlls were actually doing I don't know but they weren't doing anything good for my games.

Yes, it stays free. No, they won't send you a bill.

If you have reinstall after the free year ends, you have to buy it or reinstall earlier Windows from which you have to then pay to upgrade.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not true, Windows 10 "links" the activation to your Hardware ID, you can format everything, and after reinstall you have Win10 activated, no need to put the serial again.
Proof: Reinstalled 3 times, everything is fine and activated.

what are you reinstalling? is it a windows 10 backup you made or are you reinstalling windows 7 and then upgrading to 10 again?
Comment has been collapsed.
Not even one among these, installed from the official ISO, formatted, and reinstalled with the Fall Update ISO, but it was activate even when i installed from upgrade on my friend pc.

Is there a reason to upgrade to windows 10? Windows 7 works fine, way more stabile with programs and games.
windows 10 is basically spyware from microsoft.
the only reason windows 10 > windows 7 is directx 12. but it's still a long way till many games will support it, and who knows, maybe the game industry will favor vulkan over dx12

So change the privacy settings? It takes less then 5 minutes to go through the privacy settings to turn them off.
As far as I'm aware, In Windows 7/8.1 you can't just turn them off, you have to uninstall the updates that contain the "spyware".
Don't see how that's a problem, to be honest.

It takes less than 5 minutes to google how vastly more significant the data mining on Windows 10 is, its compatibility issues, and how the automatic updating can cause critical system failure, also.
Lots of software and the interface all are still declared to need work by many users, as well.
The main issue, however, with Windows 10 is that there's just not enough reason for most users to switch, even if most of the kinks got worked out, especially with how poor its backward compatibility with older games has been declared to be.

I think I might actually install Windows 10 on my new computer [whenever I manage to get THAT], since it is supposed to be a noticeably faster, more efficient, etc OS than 7.
Then, I can keep this clunker for older games, at least till it dies completely. :')
Well, that's the hope, anyway. I'm sure I'll find several games that are too demanding for this computer, and too old for Win10. -.-
So still on the fence about that decision :)

Well I'm actually using windows 8.1, so maybe you are better off with windows 7. I'm thinking about waiting until I'm closer to the deadline, as I'm planning to get a desktop as my definitive playing machine (the laptop would still be great to carry with me when i travel, but limited to older games).

Win10 actually uses a very similar framework (in some respects) to 8, and I've heard pretty universal opinions that it's definitely better.
Worth noting that Win8 also had backward compatibility issues, so if you haven't had any problems with your games yet, perhaps that indicates they won't have a problem in 10, either. Maybe?
I don't know what 8 is like now, but it was a pretty awful OS. If the upgrade to 10 is in fact limited in being free, it definitely might be worth doing, even if it causes you a few issues.
If nothing else, Win10 should keep getting better over time. Win8 is all-but-disavowed by this point :P

I'd say I had exactly the same old games compatibility problems on Win 10 as I had on Win 7 =)
But, thanks to the grown steam communities, I managed to solve them and even played a couple of games I couldn't before.
Can't say it for every game, of course, but I haven't encountered any unplayable one so far.

Made the same experience. Some old games did not work on my PC, no matter of W7 or W10. But steam community (and some others) are so awesome, it helps a lot:) Although I have to admit I had Problems in the beginning with comptibility of SweetFX and W10, finally I ended up using RadeonPro for some games to fix SweetFX, works out fine now;)

You can only turn off the spying completely if you have the Enterprise version of Windows 10. You can't turn off all the spying and you have to keep checking the settings after updates to see if they have been re-enabled, which is what happens with the Threshold 2 update. That update also removes 3rd party software without asking and then you'll have to reinstall them.

I upgraded this week, only because I had to. I was having a problem with my computer, some sort of virus I guess and nothing could fix it. So I upgraded as a last resort, to try and fix it before taking my computer to a store and pay for it to get fixed. It did work. I didn't have any kind of problems since the upgrade regarding the virus issue.
Honestly, I was disappointed at first. I felt win 10 was much slower than win 7 and was kind of afraid it wouldn't run my steam games.
I'm no expert in computers so a friend of mine helped me. He said it was like that in the beginning, but after upgrading drivers and such it would be much faster. Truth be told, he was right, at least in my case it worked like that. It's much better now and I didn't have any problems at all. So, after my initial hate, I'm satisfied now.
The one thing that bothered me was that when you choose to upgrade they don't give you the option to erase everything. I wanted that. Your programs and files are automatically saved. Everything was there after the upgrade and all programs were installed and working.
Don't know if you should do it or not. If I hadn't had problems I would've stayed with win 7. Now that I use win 10 I do not have the desire to go back to win 7 anymore. Hope it helps a little bit. :)

Still using W7 myself ... pointless upgrading for now at least for my purpose - will,
most probably upgrade a month before this "Win 10 is free shit period" expires.
Comment has been collapsed.
10 is simply better in every way but updates and privacy. I'm pretty sure most of the people who picked 7 never tried 10.

Windows 10 has been flawless for me. If you do upgrade to Windows 10, you have a 30 day trial period in which you can revert back to your previous version of Windows if you do not like the upgrade. You don't lose any files or programs in the process, either.
Comment has been collapsed.
You also could run a VM to just test it ;) like https://www.virtualbox.org/
Easiest is to download a built from here https://dev.windows.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/windows/ and mount that

I'm happy with Windows 10, its fast, my laptop battery seems better, but if you are good with your Seven installation, keep it, or make a dual boot for testing ;)
I didn't try reverting, but the dual boot works perfectly with 8.1, i think it will be the same with Seven

"Also, do you lose files and programs when upgrading? Do you suggest any form of backup?"
yes, windows 10 is a different os from windows 7, it will wipe completely your hdd when you change os, back up your files.
as for me, I will do change my OS next year when the FREE Win 10 is about to expire.
Some steam games have issues with windows 10.
imo I like the UI of win7.
if you like windows 8, you would very much like windows 10. (I hate the tiles on windows8)
I say just upgrade into windows 10 next year a couple of days before the freebie expires. It will become much stable at that time.
I believe they will cease support on every previous version of windows, that's why I am changing os before it expires. take advantage of the free os change.

if the game is working on win8, it will do just fine on windows10.
most of the time issues was due to drivers not being supported by win10.
or drivers being lost or corrupted during the file transfer from the backup, or the user simply forgot to reinstall the drivers properly.
it is best to back up the games/programs/files
then simply reinstall all the drivers from their respective official sites.
if you are using an old gpu like from 10 years ago, there is a chance that it's drivers will not be supported by win10.
here's a list of some games that are known to be ok and are having issues

Upgrading to Windows 10 will NOT wipe your hard drive. I upgraded from 7 to 10 two days ago. The upgrade process will preserve all your installed programs and data. It will also warn you if any programs won't run on Windows 10 and give you the opportunity to update or remove them.
Backing up your data is always a good practice.
Comment has been collapsed.
If you have 7 stick with it. If you have 8 then might as well upgrade. I'm using XP, 7 and 10.

Windows 10 is pretty stable, though there are some down sides like force updates and tracking however it can be managed, Otherwise windows 10 is very nice.
You will not loose any data or program from the system after the upgrade, while checking for the upgrade it will let you know if there is any application which is not compatible so you can make the informed decision whether to remove or upgrade that app.
Backup is always important, I would suggest both a cloud backup and local external HDD backup.
Downside of windows 10 from games perspective: if you play a lot of old games with Securom or other third party DRM those games will not work in windows 10 unless you crack them with a NO CD crack.

I was skeptical at first, but I upgraded last month and...
Let me say it, I didn't regret at all, you won't regret either.
Windows 10 is soooo much faster than 7.
Sometimes my system used to freeze at random when using windows 7. It still happens, but the freezing times are reduced to like 20% the previous ones.
The few things I hate about 10 are just the input icon not going away (I tryed at least 7-8 times disabling it, but after every reboot it comes back) and not being able to move icons freely in the start menu trough folders. (You can actually create a right-side menu moving icons just like you want to. Any file or shortcut you have can be "Added to the Start Menu" and placed wherever on the right side of it. Just like in the image.)
I'm also using windows shop apps since I upgraded, one thing I thought I'd never want to use, and that's a huge improvement, for me. Screw the default email app (yeah, that doesn't work well yet), I installed Touch Mail and now I'm receiving email notifications directly in the notification bar. I no longer have to use Outlook or similar programs to read my emails, neither I have to open my browser for them.
I still have to find a problem I'm really concerned about, yet I found so many things I like that W7 didn't have.
After this post, Microsoft should pay me, goddamnit. This really seems like and advertisement.

i don't know if this is a sarcasm or not.
Anyway, w8.1 is a great OS with good performance (better than w7). The only thing you could critique is all related about tiles, but this is more about likes and dislikes. So i don't understand why people talks bad about w8.
I'd tried w10 time ago (2 PC), but i had issues with RAM and my nvidia cards, so i've returned to 8.1 (yes, i'd made clean update from the ISO, installed latest drivers and else). I will try w10 later, now seems they have some problems with the last update. But, at moment, w8.1 is the one that gives the best performance for me.
Comment has been collapsed.
I was actually being serious about it, but I know nobody would really listen to that.
Performance-wise it is indeed the best Windows so far. It is hated for interface, which is acceptable after a while. At least that's what I felt when using a borrowed laptop with it.
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree with you. But as i said, the interface thing is something about likes and dislikes. At begining i didn't feel confortable with it, but some time afther i got used to the new interface, really i only use it a few times, most of times i need a program that i don't have in my desktop y open it by using the search (ctrl+q) that is very fast.
Anyway, good to know that i am not alone whit this thing.

Two questions:
What is the cut off date to get Windows 10 for free?
Is there any easy way to check if a certain game won't run on Windows 10? Is there a list of popular games that don't support it?

Alright, thanks! Looks like a still have some time to wait.

I would upgrade for sure, the price (0) is woth it. But wait until spring or so until it gets "finished" (although last build improver significantly). You can see performance improvements especially on older machines. But watch out for build upgrades. Initial upgrade went well, but installation of the latest build reset my IE and some other system settings.

Well I've heard just 2 complaints of users, one was my grandpa that apparently didn't have all his speakers sounding with 10, a driver issue I guess. The other one was my best friend's gf, but that was a weird stuff... she deleted by mistake her "My Documents" folder and then couldn't retrieve her files from the bin, I had to format it back to W8.1.
A driver issues is fixed with time, the other stuff was dumb to begin with. I will upgrade between february and june to W10, when most of the "glitches" (I can't find a better word) are ironed out.
Comment has been collapsed.
You are not far from truth... I did asked wtf was passing through her mind and it was like:
Well the My Docs icon was bothering me on my desktop and I just thought it was a shortcut so I deleted it, then I panicked later on when I couldn't find my stuff, I clicked on restore from the bin but only a couple of folders managed to be recovered and I don't know what to do (intensifies crying)"

There is no actual reason to get windows 10, least not right now.
There are no Direct X 12 only games. There are a couple of games that use DX12, but generally you can do without it.
Windows 10 might be a bit faster, but not much and if you know how to configure a system you won't notice a difference.
There are some major and I do mean major privacy concerns with windows 10. Yes you can turn most of it off, but did you know that many of them get turned back on when there is an update?
Forced updated. These are harder to turn off, not even sure they can be.
If you use the edge browser, it can and does ignore at least somethings that are put in your hosts file. If you don't know what a hosts file is, its whats used to make sure certain sites are blocked or get redirected. When it comes to bing, edge will ignore the hosts file.
If you do decide to go with windows 10, I suggest looking up stuff about how to get your privacy back. Do all this BEFORE installing windows 10 as there is some stuff you can do while you are installing it. Here is a good video thats recent and does a good job of explaining what needs to be done.

Hello,
It's now been 3-4 months from the release of windows 10 and, as you probably already know, it's free for windows 7 and 8 users.
Now... Do I really want to upgrade to Windows 10? The new features seem to be pretty good, but I've heard some bad comments on it..
I mainly play games, record, do video editing and 3D modelling. What do you think, should I upgrade?
Also, do you lose files and programs when upgrading? Do you suggest any form of backup?
(I'm a Windows 7 User)
