Are MMOs still relevant?
+1 for SWTOR, but only from time to time.
Guild Wars 2 has a pretty fun gameplay as well.

Actually it was - if you recall, it went free to play not long after Hutt expansion - I spent hours doing the raids and the instances, reverse engineering the new gear mods etc and finally got to near perfect.
Free to Play'ers were getting around the subscription and gear limitations via the marketplace because for some reason the mods that most tanks used (Jugg tanks - not Assassin or Bounty hunter tanks) were not on the 'need to be a subscriber' list and could be inserted into the orange tier gear that was cosmetic (Available to everyone). On top of that some of the newer gear allowed jug tanks only - to get to almost 50% Evade, 25% block, 25% Parry - so instead of redoing the mod permissions etc they completely nerfed the jug lowering the diminishing return values, making it almost impossible to get above 80% total damage reduction.

Well, I haven't really played in months. Just checking my account & characters, but there is still plenty of updates & players atm.

Unfortunately there is nothing new about the bots. I have spent more than 200€ during first month, so yea. I know what you feel.
There is hella of updates, weapon/gear enchanting and gold is much cheaper atm.

MMORPGs are still the most cost-efficient games you can play if you have a ton of free time to devote to them. That's not even taking into account all the F2P ones. If I really took up playing any MMORPG seriously paying $15 monthly is cheaper than $50 or so I spend on games, usually more.

Which none of them is.
DOTA 2 has 10 people per server/game. So does CS in some game modes.
Heartstone is a 1v1 online TCG...

That doesn't mean you're right tho.
Facts are facts.

Hi, Fnord!
You're absolutely right, so MMO means many players, more than 10 on one place?
So if I play WoW and raid a boss with 8 of my friends, WoW isn't MMO because this location(same as dota,cs map) has not so many players, right?
Ah, nevermind I'm too train now, had to burn some hours...
Comment has been collapsed.
The 8-man instance in WOW would then be an instance within the MMO. You've still got the overworld map where all the players can mingle and annoy each other. If CS:GO had an overworld map (rather than a server selection screen) where you could run around with all the other players, then it would be an MMO-FPS.

i kinda agree here, the mmo tag gets tossed around easily when it should not..
i was debating with myself over ARK, it has mmo tag when i feel it should not.. yes, it is massively played, but its servers are limited to how many players per server... even though its upto 64players, imo that doesnt make it a MMO.. it is a massively played multiplayer online game(MPMO), but not the same thing imo...
Comment has been collapsed.
it's just a rant about how one aspect of wow isn't so much MMO. that one aspect of the game doesn't inherently make the entire game a non-mmo though. but it does bring up a valid argument about many other games claiming they are mmo when they are instead just a regular multiplayer game improperly tagged as an mmo.

I've always been interested in playing MMOs but I never manage to keep playing them. From way back with Ultima Online, I can play MMOs for a maximum of 3 months before I lose interest and quit them. I think Planetside and Planetside 2 are the only 2 game I played for more than 3 months (I think 10 and 6 months respectively)
I get tired of the grinding and time you need to invest in them to get to the end game content which usually ends up being disappointing. Also, I travel a lot due to my work, so I have to face the issue with IP block and other shenanigans that annoy me. For example, I'm in the Middle East right now and I can't play Riders of Icarus because they have IP blocked the region for some asinine reason.

Well, it's really well made, it has decent quests and memorable characters (Razum-Dar is hella cute :D), locations are beautiful (you'll often catch yourself looking from the tops of the hills and saying wow).
The thing I like the most is that MMO features aren't force-fed to you. you can play ESO either as a single-player game, or true MMO with raids and group dungeons (man, they're really hard to do alone :D).
Comment has been collapsed.
Sound interesting, I would like to as a single player first before moving to MMO stuff if I like it, not sure if I'll be able to enjoy with 300+ ping because there's no SEA server or closest enough to it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, ESO only has two servers - EU and US. But I think it might work for you after all - the combat is not that fast, you should be able to block, dodge and use abilities. My ping is usually 60 to 120, and it works really well - no stuttering or teleporting around when you move.

+1 for ESO, I've been playing about a year and a half myself. I've grown to love it. I tried it in beta and it wasn't for me at the time, felt like "just another MMO". It has went through a lot of changes and polish and I consider it one of the best if not the best action MMORPGs out there to date, and I've tried just about everything.
I played WoW for 11 years off and on including an early beta. ESO is the only game that truly makes the urge to play WoW go away. I still browse MMO-champion from time to time but as far as the urge to play it has pretty much vanished.

I used to play LOTRO, and Guild Wars. Now I'm playing Neverwinter. I don't know how long I'll stick with it; I like the idea of them, but in real life I rarely have time to play in the long term, and because of that I don't get close with fellow players.
Comment has been collapsed.
Man, I really liked LOTRO. Kind of felt bummed by Mines of Moria though; the legendary weapon system just sucked with random stats and almost every mob dropping 3rd to 1st age weapons / items. I could have lived with that BUT when the game servers were shut in EU, and the game became free to play, I lost all my interest. Especially the damn ingame shop and popups just made the whole game repulsive.

I was a fairly early F2P player - never played it before then. When I joined a lot of people were angry at the F2P move. I enjoyed it a lot early on, in part because I've been a great fan of the books over the years. A lot of the design is clever and respectful. The community was (by and large) fairly quirky and kind. I joined a Kin that was supportive and had good events, but at some point I got very busy and that was the end of that. I doubt I could ever get my house out of arrears at this point. It was good fun, though.
I had the same problem in LOTRO that I have with Neverwinter, which is that I leveled way too fast - since I'm not racing to the endgame, and am enjoying playing the world instead, I always end up way over-level for where I'm playing. Oh well.

MoM was really the only proper expansion LotRO received. Everything after that was kinda on "glorified content patch" side of things. It helps expansion had some the best underground zones ever put into MMORPGs. Speaking of servers now all of them are now hosted in New Jersey, I think? Transferring servers back to proper EU location was apparently cancelled, sadly.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, I thought that Rohan would have been proper expansion at least. I heard the mounted combat was kind of bummed but thought that there would have been more content otherwise still :( Yes, the underground zones were really great, as were the original zones in Shadows Angmar. The later added zone called Forochel was also really cool (oh the puns!), the familiar names could be a small reason for this (yeah, the place really took inspiration from Finland ^^ Quite like the mobs called Rauta-Lehmä Warior etc).
I didn't really like the whole deal of moving EU servers to US. Yes, the ping wasn't really bad BUT there was still some laggy times and hiccups. Also playing with guys with so different timezones could be a problem (US vs Finland). The original game had great atmosphere, great graphics (the engine had some problems but it worked quite nicely), tradeskilling was fun and oh the music. I really loved the soundtrack!
Comment has been collapsed.
From my experience a lot of people saw Riders of Rohan kinda devalued because the main draw, war-steed system, was made available to everyone regardless of whether you had the expansions or not. But yes, it was step up from Siege of Mirkwood, for example. It also had an amazing soundtrack that introduced a new theme.

I think you're pretty on the mark on that score, but it's the sort of game I like to play at times. They are pretty brazen about driving people toward the cash store, but someone has to pay for the thing, I guess. Do you recommend DDO? I've always been tempted.
Comment has been collapsed.
If you have a group of friends who will play it with you and take your time going through story as intended. Keep in mind that, for the most part, quests and dungeons are synonyms in DDO and each feels like a small adventure as your party goes through the intended module. It's kinda unique in that sense despite other games also utilizing lobby-based format aka you only see people in hubs, while adventure areas and quest zones are instanced for your party. Main "problem" with DDO is that you kinda need to know the D&D system to be good at it or put some effort towards understanding how it works - it's not the kind of MMORPG where you pick a class, get skills as you level up and maybe put some points in talents along the way.

You know that far from all MMOs give you the ability to buy power, right? Games like Ultima Online, World of Warcraft, Guild wars 1 & 2, The Secret World, Elder Scrolls Online and so on, are not Pay 2 win. I think you have a very very skewed view of MMOs.
Comment has been collapsed.
OH REALLY? THen you win the game by having top stuff but unable to beat up a completly newb with no gear? Well that's osme winning... The idea of the MMO is competitave... Now they just added story to the new onces to make you feel like you win it without even having top gears... Get real. Why would it be online hte first place if not the PvP? Why implant pvp if the PVP aint hte main goal?

and im just trying to make MMO fanboys to quit nagging me how great MMOs when I know they are bad and I answered the OPs question with my own personal opinion. Instead I got you and 2-3 more that argue with me and now blacklist me, because they cant accept the opinion of a person in the other end of the world.

I know many, many MMO players who don't give a shit about PvP, but have other interests in the game they are playing. I am one of them. In fact I actively avoid any PvP situation.

Just curious about your opinion: How would a script help you though a raid with bosses with a certain amount of rng in their attacks as well as random co-players?
Or are you stating that they're parsing the screen input within milliseconds to go through different tactics/move contained in the script?
I don't quite see how this is winning either way but was curious.
Comment has been collapsed.
You havent played a NCSoft game have you? Try lineage 2, there's parties of scripted players who literally do everything by holding space and nothing more. Auto aim, auto dodge, auto cast, auto on everything.
GW and B&S are with less but they have enough too, they just havent figuredo ut how to add the lineage 2 advanced scripts to them.... When they do you'll enjoy a botland there too... Just saying... nothing much.
Comment has been collapsed.
Lineage 2 Was pay to play game while the scripting/botting and ebay begane, NCSoft west just saw they can get more ppl to do it if it goes F2P... That's all I can say about it. And yes, they do offer. Even MOBAS like Dota and LoL have them, even FPSs liek CS go it, you think that old engine new mmo wont have them? The difference isthat in mmo is more massive than the other type of gaems and it's harder to detect. IF the anti cheat didnt detect him as a bot or something and he just stands there doing the same action going ahead, not giving any human reaction. Amused ^^ Stop replying to me, I dont want to argue, but I just keep getting stuff which are obvious... If you are a fan of MMOs good for you, I personally like RPGs, loved MMos back in the days, but this constant cheating there totally kicked me back to singleplayer games and to MOBAs...

How about the games where the gear cap is so low that you'll just save a handful of hours on buying it online, and where the progression is cosmetic? Or where the gear that matters comes from items you can't transfer between characters? (Like say some of the ones I mentioned above? The GW series used the fact that it's not reliant on grind to get gear as one of its selling points)
Comment has been collapsed.
Do you honestly plan to argue about this? I can do it for ages, I spent enough years playing MMos and I know the hell it is... You cant do jack about the unfair players and you just sit there and act like it's not happening, that aint fun... End of discussion.
Comment has been collapsed.
Alright, clear example:
Here you see the cost of different kinds of armor
Guess the statistical difference between those and the base armor that you'll be able to afford by the time you can buy it?
If you guessed 0, then you guessed right.
Also, if you intend to PvP the game gives you the best possible armor. You can just have bought the game, and you'll have equipment with max stats.
I've also played years playing MMOs, but apparently different MMOs than you.
Comment has been collapsed.
And your first reaction when I gave you a clear example of a game that does not fit in with what you were, saying, a game where in PvP you're given the best possible gear which puts you on exactly equal terms in terms of gear as with everyone else, and where in PvM the only thing you can pay for is to look different with"prestige skins", was to insult me... I would say that that's a clear sign of you not being a very mature person.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, considering you stated insulting me, are plain old wrong and refuse to admit it despite the evidence being right in front of you (which I guess is why you chose to insult me rather than being willing to /gasp/ admit that there might be exceptions, as that would ruin your limited world view). Here's another reply. And a blacklist.
And if you would like to prove me wrong and get me to change my view, explain to me how a game that literally gives you the best possible equipment without you having to do anything is pay to win.
Comment has been collapsed.
I LITERALLLY DIDNT INSULT YOU EVEN ONCE
I am LITERALLLY begging you whole day to LEAVE ME ALONE...
I'm LITERALLY NOT PROVEN WRONG... You can go to EBAY and find ALL THE GEAR U WANT... Go click, buy, pay, get, use, be happy. Quit living in your imaginary world where it's all flowers and happiness and quit doing fake arguments which nobody wants to bother with and quit claiming I insulted anyway, I am literally LEGIT TIRED, of you. Black list all you want, if you want find and kill me, do whatever you want. JUSt LEAVE ME ALONE, THANK YOU.. Do you realize that I'm not in any mood to do pointless arguments with block heads who refuse to accept a simple leave me alone from 10 posts now.
I'm black listing you and, if there wasa report function I'd report you for cosntantly trying to cause a flame war.
Have a nice life and get of mine. THANK YOU
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes you did..
And let me break it down to you in a simple way
-Buying an item on ebay or buying gold or anything here would give you 0 advantage as the game gives you the best items in the game. You can literally not get better gear than the gear the game just gives you right out the gate.
You can go to EBAY and find ALL THE GEAR U WANT...
Yes, and it's not better than what the game just gives you So tell me, how can you get better gear by buying gear that is identical in terms of stats to that gear which the game just gives you right out the gate?
If the gear is not better then you're not paying to win, you're paying to get a different skin. There's a difference, but I wonder if you're astute enough to know that 60 armour is exactly the same thing as 60 armour even if the gear you bought on ebay looks flashier.
So tell me, in simple words, how something that is identical is better than another identical piece. Because I would really like to know.

I did meet some people who are playing MMOs, but the past couple of years I never met anyone, playing them. Is this genre still relevant? If you are playing them, which ones do you like the most?
