I need some recommendation of open world games for my low end pc (64 mb vram dedicated after river upgrade a really weird 128 still acts same)

Anyway i want games with open worlds and item collection and character progress but with a good combat.
Preferably not a top down game and before 2007.

Please dont suggest an upgrade it aint an option for me .

Probably worse, the selling point for it was something close to No mans sky, like infinite world.
And till No mans sky it was the biggest game world ever created =)

A lot worse, but so is the AI.
On the other hand, the dungeons are massive and there are thousands of them.

The older GTA's, maybe Prototype, but they aren't RPGesque... maybe:

  • Knights of the Old Republic
  • The Gothic Series
  • Thief
  • the original Deus Ex

Dunno, all from the top of my head, but there's a lot more out there.

Stardew Valley
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Space Rangers HD: A War Apart
Space Pirates and Zombies
Sunless Sea
And not to forget classics, like Divine Divinity

Yeah, no 3D. Still great games. And all Open World RPGs.

Stardew Valley is less of a fitting one to the question, but a really nice game - Sunless Sea and Divine Divinity are two games I ought to get into for way too long, I should install them soon :D

I know. None of those games is great regarding combat. Not the way he seems to want it.
But considering his hardware limitations, he should be probably be a bit less restrictive about gameplay. ;)

Minecraft (FTB) is probably a weird suggestion? :)
Other than that, maybe Witcher 3? (I know.. newer but I tried running on old PC and with all on low it seemed playable) <-- aww 64Mb vram I see now.. never mind :)
Also: Risen and Fallout?

I never intended for a joke or something funny, sorry :o
As for Risen.. looked up specs and it seems you are a bit short there too.
I don't know what the rest of the box is like but you might consider getting a cheap GPU?
I played all the games I mentioned (except Witcher) on a 5 year old PC that I retired over a year ago. Only good thing it had that allowed me to play was a cheap 512Mb GPU that I bought new for I guess around $45.
Just did a quick check, you can easily buy a graphics card with 1-2 Gb now for under $50
I would seriously consider looking into that.

I'd like to recommend System Shock 2 and Jagged Alliance 2, but they're less Open Worldy but more RPGy (and JA2 top down on top of that ...).

So, err ... WoW is from 2005. ;P

How about Inquisitor? Not sure about the combat since I've never played it, but you might be able to run it on your rig. It's available now in the Bundle Stars Fantasy Heroes Bundle. Good luck.

I had a one lowend machine that ran Mafia 1 perfectly (with some reduced settings) and then another that wouldn't run it without horrendous geometry issues to where it was unplayable.

But it's worth a shot.

I suppose

Microsoft Windows® 2000/XP. (Windows® 95/98/ME/NT not supported)
Pentium IV 1.4GHz (or AMD AthlonXP 1700+ processor or higher).
256MB System Memory.
3D Hardware Accelerator Card Required - 100% DirectX® 9.0c compatible with 128 MB and Shader model 2.0. (GF FX 5700 or ATI 9500)
100% DirectX® 9.0c compatible 16-bit sound card and latest drivers
4.0GB of uncompressed free disk space (plus 600MB for Windows® 2000/XP swap file)
100% Windows® 2000/XP compatible mouse, keyboard and latest drivers.

Try also
Giants: Citizen Kabuto (was free on GOG some time ago)
GUN
Gothic 1 (and maybe 2)
Mount and Blade
Arx Fatalis
Ziggurat
Risk of Rain
Rogue Legacy

how much system memory - I have had it running on a low end before - but had to add another stick of 256mb memory - to top it up to 512mb, so that the onboard graphics didn't steal all the memory for its own purposes - then you just play around with the vid settings if I remember right

I'm sure that How to Survive won't run because I had alike setup and it was impossible to play.

Not necesarily RPGs, but Terraria and Don't Starve will probably run in a potato. I used to play any of the STALKER series in a pretty bad PC, at least the first one. Mount and blade looks as if it could run.

Maybe Steam tags can help you

How about Dont Starve and Terraria? It is 2D games after all and they shouls run on your spec. Dont sure about Starbound... Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale series also should work even in remastered and Enhanced versions
Dungeon Siege First and second (not sure about third)
Sacred Gold.
Enclave
Fable - The Lost Chapters (old and first. It have a realy low system req.)
Space Rangers from wery first one and to HD steam remake of last part.
Postal 1 and 2 (and postal one remake, maybe?)
First Far Cry. (Dont sure about another parts)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Sid Meier's Pirates! (both classic and remake in 3D)
Lords of Xulima (this is not so old and great game. And really - you can run it on your PC)

Dark Souls 1 with proper patch, Dark Souls 2 right off the bat. They run incredibly well on clunkers.

You might be able to also get away with Dragon's Dogma or Dragon Age Origins.

I've played Dogma on a toaster before, it wasn't pretty, but it definitely wasn't unplayable.

Lol? Ds1 requires high end cpu to even go above 30 . It's so badly optimized that it rely mostly on cpu insted of gpu.

I was at the same boat as you, I had hp pavilion g6 which is not for gaming, I am making a computer of $1700, I've spent $1300 already.. I am buying it very slowly with credit, so basically buy 1 part, pay it off slowly, buy the next part.. and so on. Maybe you can do that? building a computer is pretty easy, if you watch a few videos, and your budget doesnt have to be above 1k, it could be $600 or so and that can run most games. A lot of people from this community are also very helpful. I've actually asked for help about my build before, and i got my help pretty quickly.

and that is the end of wall-o-text. Its about upgrading and my upgrading experience if you wish to read it.

If you want combat, the best medieval combat would be Mount & Blade Warband.
Renowned Explorers is also pretty good, with classic rpg combat.
Don't Starve is a really good rpg/survival, but it is kinda top down, but not really... its like, top-side.
Don't Starve Together is multiplayer version.

I sugest:
"Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines" - Action, FPP, RPG, but you need few patches to enjoy it
"Jagged Alliance 2" - tactial, turn-based, isometric, one of my favorite game, but it's "kind of open world"
"Gothic 1, 2, 3" - action RPG, fantasy
"Fable: The Lost Chapter" - again action RPG, fantasy
"GTA 3, VC, SA" - but you propably know them
"Baldur's Gate series" - RPG, isometric, fantasy, it's "kind of open world", also you can check Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment
"Mass Effect 1" - S-F, action RPG, shooter. I know it's from 2008, but i saw you are playing Killing Floor so 1st ME should work on you PC
"Revenant" - hack'n'slash
"Gun" - western action
"The Godfather" - action
"Sid Meier's Pirates! "
"Age of Pirates"

Some of theme were already listed in this topic, but i wrote it again to mark them as relly good!

Have you thought about using emulators to enjoy the beauties of the past? Any computer can run ZSnes.
Just read the "no top-down" requirement, which rules out the vast majority of emulated games.
