does rock band count? XD I actually play most games muted or just don't pay attention to the songs. I like the 2 songs from portal that play in the credits, and the tetris theme... the songs in rhythm heaven were cute. I'm really trying to think, I know there must be more songs... oh, the music when you fight team plasma in pokemon black/white! I do remember liking that very much.

Not really haha. Otherwise that'd obviously win @ Rock Band

Recently? Soundtracks that have impressed me were Bastion (by the time the game was released I had already listened to it a few times), Spacechem, Frozen Synapse, VVVVV, Super Meat Boy... Fallout 3/NV are great, that swing just has timeless appeal and it contrasts nicely with the post apocalyptic setting. Civ 4 had great background music, and of course its main theme has won major non-gaming awards. God of War 3 had an awesome main menu theme, pity it wasn't a full-length song. It's a shame when a dev pays no real attention to the music in the game, it has nearly sold a few titles to me.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle = Absolutely Perfect for the game. (minus the rap sections for Knuckles).
But, seriously. Have you ever heard Escape from the City or Live and Learn and not been pumped?

I agree completely (Rouge's music didn't really fit in particularly well either).

Cool great theme, but what about sonic heroes? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw6KRkx0vNg

Sonic Heroes was good in the music department, but I honestly hated playing it xD

I have a few good songs to recommend:
-Super Meat Boy Light Worlds 4-5 (Hell and Rapture), absolutely PHENOMENAL pieces of music!
-"We Are Finally Cowboys", this one is from the end of No More Heroes 1 and therefore may contain SLIGHT SPOILERS. Otherwise, it's an awesome song with awesome guitar. Nuff said! :D
-"Tor's Theme", this one is from a game called Iji (also look that up, it's a very good free indie game.), and the song is pretty sweet as well. It plays during the final boss as well, so there may be slight spoilers with it too.
-"Solaris Phase 2", this one is from a fairly bad Sonic game, but the song is actually quite good. Great guitar like pretty much every song I like heh.
-"02", this song is simply amazing, but a lot of people consider it overrated or overpraised. I however, think it is still a very good song. It's from the original Kirby 64 on.... guess what? The Nintendo 64! :P
-"Riku Battle" from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days... 'nother amazing song.
-Pretty much every song in VVVVVV....yes, every single one I like quite a bit.
-Eh, this one plays way too much during the course of the game, but Morrowind's main theme song! HOLY COW! I was seriously impressed by how epic and grand it was when I first played it, in fact it really helped get me into the mood of being a wandering adventurer in the low-quality-textured land of Morrowind. ^_^
-"The Almighty" from Persona....4 I believe. The guitar in this one is nice as well.
-"Philistine" from No More Heroes 2. This song will literally get stuck in your head for days and days! (And creepily enough the character who sings it WANTS that to happen in the game as well.)
-"Still Alive".....no comment needed honestly.
I can literally list billions and billions of awesome video game songs, but really I just don't have the time. I gotta go play some GTA 4! If you like the ones I listed and want more, just add me on Steam I guess. ^_^
P.S. I haven't played Bastion but I've heard it has really good music as well so....yeah.

I am in 100% sync with you on the Super Meat Boy soundtrack. I bought the signed edition of the soundtrack, because I absolutely love the game, and the game is a much better quality game exponentially with its soundtrack playing in the background. I could a long time on a single level, but with the songs never got repetitive to me and had me humming along as Meat Boy died awful deaths.

I like the VVVVVV soundtrack. I once chatted with the creator of the soundtrack (nickname: SoulEye) on justin.tv which lead to me winning a copy of VVVVVV from him in a contest-ish raffle thingie.
Also, kudos for promoting Iji, it's a great free indie game (with great music, too).
One of my favorite soundtracks is from the X series. A lot of it sounds pretty generic, but some sectors overwhelm you with tracks of epic awesomeness

Chrono Cross: Scars of Time
This is my all time favorite song in a game. As for others, I've gotta say the Kingdom Hearts, BioShock, Deus Ex, and Drakengard series all have some pretty great music.
In case you managed to miss out on Drakengard (much more likely than missing out on any of these other games), the music is just amazing.
Edit: After some thought, I've decided to add in another game: Ogre Battle 64. Most of the music was rather simple, but it always seemed to capture the mood perfectly.

Well, for me it is Advent Rising ("Greater Lights", as example) and Mirrors Edge (im old fan of Solar Fields). Also i like compositions "Pit of Maledictus" and "The Great Devourer" from Wh40k: Down Of War II (this game have not very impressive soundtrack, but not bad at all).

WTF!
Now. My Top OST List(full albums):
And a list of individual songs
Cthulhu Saves The World - A Moment of Clarity
Team Fortress 2 - The Art of War
Torchlight - Town
Radiant Historia - Where the Wind and Feathers Return
Ace Combat Zero The Belkan War - Zero
Final Fantasy XII - Rabanastre Downtown <-- I know Final fantasy has a lot of great songs, but I never played any Final Fantasy games so I only know songs other people gave me. This one of them.

They're good, but I definitely have things I like more than them.

It definitely had a good soundtrack, but I personally didn't put it in my list because it wasn't really its own soundtrack. To me, putting it in this list would feel roughly the same as putting a radio station in it.

One topic I do not see discussed very often is music in gaming. Some games have fantastic soundtracks, flat out. Seeing my two favorite hobbies are gaming and playing and listening to music, figured we might as well talk about some of our favorite music in gaming here. Doesn't have to be a Steam title, even though those are easy to relate to.
To start us off here, I'd have to say my Top 3 Gaming Soundtracks would be Team Fortress 2, Cthulhu Saves the World, and The Uncharted Series. The main themes of TF2 and Uncharted are phenomenal, but the music just throughout the game in Cthulhu Saves the World is astonishing. TF2 has such a wide variety of fantastic songs composed for it, too. Well, I'll leave you guys to it, interested to hear ones talked about.
