I've noticed a lot of people making giveaways lasting about an hour just to give a better chance to people entering.
What if, in the giveaway creation process, you could close a giveaway to entries after a selected number? The contest would still go on, but the chances for everyone would increase.

As always, questions/comments welcome.

I like the idea of a limited number of entries... but once the limit were reached wouldn't it make sense for it to end immediately? Since the odds wouldn't change over time if 50 people out of 50 people entered. It could be cool to make a 5 day giveaway, but with a cap at 150 entrants or so, whichever came first.

I think what he was trying to say was that when some people leave the giveaway, someone else will be able to enter it

That just encourages lurking. If you want to limit it, make a group or private giveaway.

But the OP is suggesting a public and random giveaway system with limited users. If you make a private or group one it would not be random people and limited. If you limit it by invitation, then it's not public and random, and if you leave it open for everyone then it's not limited.

My point is that I don't like the idea of limiting public giveaways. Its not fair to people who aren't on constantly. Plus the spirit of public giveaways seems to be a pure lottery. You do nothing, free chance at games you don't have to work for.

The part about private giveaways wasn't a potential suggestion, it was a solution already available. Create a private giveaway group with the amount of people you want, maybe post on this forum to jumpstart the user base, or post it in S.Gifts steam group if you want a surefire way to drastically reduce the giveaway entry numbers. This way you get people that actually participate (or at least somewhat) in the community rather than people who open the front page habitually every 30 minutes. From what I've read in your OP, this is the type of thing you are looking for anyways, just far more fair and less arbitrary.

I like this idea. But like jesse said, it would be nice if the giveaway ends once the limit were reached. Would do no harm. But I sense a lot of people complaining about not being able to join the giveaway because they have other stuff to do. Anyway, I still like the idea. Maybe it should be done just to Private/Group giveaway?

It sounds like a good idea, but just like Kogut & Polytope said, make it to the group or private giveaways.

As long as that's just an option, then I'd be fine with it.

With the big ones, everyone might have less of a chance, but it's still an equal one. Maybe I just don't care much because I'm super unlucky when it comes to giveaways/contests/raffles, but as long as someone's winning and happy then I'm okay with the crowds.

That would be a cool detail to add.

Yeah, but it would be optional, of course.

What difference does it make to you, as a gifter, if there is 10 or 100 people in a giveaway?
This idea cannot be added to anything but private or group giveaways, because it is an easy way to get extra points by cheating.

I personally feel that it makes it far more satisfying when you make a giveaway to see more entries than you expected. With a system where you limited the number of entries, you would know exactly how many entries there will be. Aside from that, think from the point of view of the person entering for a giveaway. You may be thinking that people would like that they have a better chance of winning...but that only applies to the people who can actually enter the giveaway. If a person doesn't visit the site frequently then it's entirely possible that they would never be able to enter a giveaway because the same 200 or 300 people would enter every giveaway, meaning the same group of people will keep winning while a majority of people can't even enter.

I'm sure you had good intentions with this idea, but it would have way too large of an impact on the actual usefulness/enjoyment of this site.

I think the entry cap would be optional. So it would depend on how you wanted to do it.

If people wanted to potentially limit the amount of giveaways possible, they would either do a private of a group giveaway. Limiting public entries has been brought up before, but doesn't really seem to have a purpose or place at the moment.

My only suggestion would be to create a private giveaway then just post it publicly on the forums. This seems to cut down entries by up to 50%.
