I'm finally back to work after having been unemployed since June 1st of this year. I went 4 long months without work and coming to Steam Gifts really helped me in a big way. It gave me something to pass the time, made me happy when everything else in my life was horrible and I wanted to jump off a nearby bridge, and just plain kept me out of trouble. So with my first paycheck I feel like I kinda gotta give something special back. I just don't know what it's gonna be. I'm thinking of spending around 50 bucks next weekend and I just don't know what exactly I should spend it on. Should I go out and buy 50 bundles and give all of it away? Or should I go out and get one AAA title and make just one person very very happy, as opposed to making a whole bunch of people moderately happy?

It got me thinking about childhood and how my parents always asked whether or not I wanted one big present or a bunch of little ones. It's not quite the same thing, but what did you prefer when you were a kid? Or what do you think is the best thing to do when you want to do something special that you don't always have the opportunity to do?

Not even sure how long this job is gonna last. It isn't a very easy job, and if I screw up once it's over. I could still wind up on that bridge. But, I'd like to do something nice while I have the chance.

When you were a kid what kind of presents did you like getting for Xmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/CharlesDarwin'sBirthday?

Congrats with your payback, you have gone a long way. :)

Both are nice.
One big gift would be more uncommon and special.
A bunch of little gifts will help you long-term, because a lot of people here put people on their whitelists or blacklists based on mere ratio.
It depends on what you want to achieve, really. ^-^
As a child, I'd always choose just 1 special gift. :D

More importantly, congrats on landing a job!!

I dunno, I guess I just wanted to accomplish making someone's day better, hopefully someone else who needs cheering up. Now I just need to figure out whether I want to make a bunch of people smile, or one person jump up and fist-pump and say F-Yeah! I won F-ing [INSERT GAME X HERE]! And thanks for the congrats. :)

Eventually, all games become cheap.
You can offer one big gesture, but the chances of hitting someone it'll truly make a great impact on, is small.

Initial price doesn't mean quality.
Most of the games at the top of my wishlist are $10 or so, retail.

Rather than a bunch of bundle games- which doesn't suck either, the people who enter those [leechers aside] can't afford those themselves, so we appreciate the games just as much as any other game- I'd suggest getting several good non-bundled games, especially if you can get them at 75% off or so, and make a lot more people just as happy as with one person and that one overpriced unbundled game.

Another way to look at it is the Orphanage Paradigm:
You can buy one really expensive namebrand bike and give it to a single random orphan;
Or you can get several just as functional and good quality bikes- but shy the bigger brand name and price tag, or even just having been manufactured a year or two before- and donate them to the orphanage, making several kids happy.
In this paradigm, bundled games would be cheap but functional bikes- meaning you could make everyone happy to have a bike, but lacking any of the spark a truly nice bike'd offer.
IE, a 2-speed bike can be just as functional as a 16-speed, but it's definitely less impressive :)

In the end, it's up to you-
I'd say, put it to whatever makes you least likely to seek out the side of a bridge. :X

good, that you are feeling better now. you are saying, that your job isnt safe and you could be soon again without job. so i would suggest you, not to spend your money for us... keep it for your own, cause you could need it later! and please visit a pychotherapist or if you cant, talk at least with your family and let them help you...
wish you good luck for the future

edit: i know you want to show, that you are thankfull for the guys, who have helped you here through your hard time. i think its more than enough, that you have written it ;)

I know, but when you were speaking about suicide I think you were not considering alcohol as an option. Drunks are doing stupid shit, and there are accidental deaths, but actual intention by ingesting alcohol to kill yourself? That takes years of practice and is called an alcoholic. :P

Anyway, I agree. With the alcohol guy, Even if you'd like to spend any of your first pay check on SG (which I think is a waste), 1 small gift, and use the rest on something fun for yourself and some friends.

I know. I was in AA for like 7 years after I had my 2nd and 3rd DUI's. Then I met a girl in AA and she introduced me to things far far worse than alcohol. I'm in a good place with it all now though. It's okay, don't worry. Things are what they are. But booze isn't a major problem for me right now. I really appreciate the concern. Thank you. :)

Try linking this, instead: http://www.mces.org/pages/suicide_fact_alcohol.php
http://www.webmd.com/depression/news/20050728/dopamine-may-play-new-role-in-depression is important as well: Alcohol generates dopeamine. That may be part of why the clinically depressed seek it out, as a sort of response to their own chemical imbalances, and also why it can aggravate their depression further.

In my case, I suffer from occasional bouts of low dopeamine, which generates suicidal tendencies, despite my having neither emotional nor clinical depression. Alcohol helps me in that regard, removing those surges near-immediately, with just a shot taken.

Alcohol is NOT bad. It has plenty of medical uses. And your reaction was pretty extreme, even if the comment was a bit tasteless; namely, since it wasn't bigoted/hateful, and thus up to the OP to determine the value of, not you.

That being said, I fully appreciate and support your sentiments and outlook, and hope your friend improves.

All my suicidal, depressed, or otherwise out-of-sorts friends would have as well.
I think it's more the kind of joke that'd upset those that have friends with suicidal or depressive conditions and don't know how to help or deal with them, than it is the kind of joke that'd upset most suffering from such directly.

Then again, I don't profess that my experiences need necessarily dictate the norm, either.

I think, it was a tasteless-yet-amusing joke. It can be both, right?

Jesus... Are you serious? First of all - he didnt jumped right? Thats means that he have brains in his head. You can say whatever you want, but if guy is dumb then he will suicide anyway, even if he have dream job, Megan Fox as his gf, best parents, huge penis, 4000 games in steam library. I know that for sure, i had a friend like this long time ago (yeah, Megan Fox wasnt his gf and i dont know how large was his penis).
Sooooo... a little joke about alcohol may encourage ppl to jump off the bridge? Are you 2004 emo teen?
Ppl who says alcohol forced them to suicide is so funny xD Like - "whos fault Bob hang himself"? - "ohhhh that all that god damn beer!" xD

upd. anyway all i wanted to say is:
bFunk: "1 small gift, and use the rest on something fun for yourself and some friends"

Hello,
Just dont lose your hope:) I would say save the money and see how the next months goes? If you want to give something now maybe really take just one bundle so you have still much money left:)

For my childhood, we always got one big present with some small ones and 1 new super nintendo game for the family^^ Which was always great:) We played hours Zelda, Secret of Mana and Co together:)

Have a nice weekend and maybe go out with some friends which cheer you up:)

I remember getting the first Zelda for Xmas. That was the best game ever when I got it. Also remember getting Kid Icarus and Metroid on the same day, but that wasn't on Xmas, it was while we were on vacation in NY/NJ and my dad was just being nice. That was an awesome day too, and getting both of those together made it memorable. Man now I've made my decision even harder. Thanks for the well wishes. :)

If you really want to spend so much on steamgifts, then you could also get like $ 10 on bundles and then get maybe two $ 20 games. That way you have two kind of special games, plus you make more people happy with it

Smart. I was kinda thinking something along those lines for a minute. Mix it up a little. I think it may depend on whether or not something awesome goes on an amazing sale next weekend. If not then I'll just take a look at what's new and/or upcoming. If I had the money this weekend I might just do a TellTale GA since I think their games are amazing. TWD Season 1&2 were absolutely incredible in my opinion. Wolf Amongst Us wasn't bad either, and I've been thinking about checking out Borderlands and GoT too. They are all currently pretty cheap and also pretty darn good as well. Okay bedtime, I'll sleep on it. :)

I'm really happy for you, that you felt good despite the difficulties you had, and from your text it seems that life hasn't succeeded in breaking you :) Keep goin!
Gift-wise I always preferred more and less gifts, but ones that made me happy. Even to this day if you would get me something big and fancy like a brand new huge television... I would be happy because gifting makes everyone happy, but I couldn't, and wouldn't really use it, it would feel as a wasted money on me. But for example a good coat that I needed and cost one tenth of the TV would make me happy. Or an invite to a restaurant. Or a better controller for the computer that doesn't cost as much as the TV, but cetainly I would get more enjoyment from it.
So, game-wise I would recommend you to get multiple copies of a good developer's game that's on sale - for example now we have a telltale sale - from 50$ you can get maybe one copy of every single game they have, including Game of Thrones and Tales from the Borderlands (let's ignore Minecraft for now :D ) This way you still give high quality game, but more than one people can enjoy it (I think it's better than giving away one copy of 50$ game)

Totally just said the exact same thing in the last response I made. If it had been this weekend that I got my first check I'd probably be doing a TellTale giveaway. I love those games. Thanks for the input and the congrats! :)

I'm feeling the "bridge" way now too ='(
But I still can advice so I think you should choose "mid" option - buy some games, which are cheap(or on a decent sale) and cool at the same time =p
The most important thing in gifts isn't the price but your thoughts on it. And as I'm totally bad and selfish person(asshole?) I can say that one big gift would be received by only one guy, who will PROBABLY enjoy this game, so let's count it 1/2 "happinits"(new unit of measurement invented by me just now), and if you decide to give away in the way I advice you to, 10 games for instance = more people will be glad to get the games, and 50% of them will JUST enjoy their games and 15% will LOVE them (which doubles happinits, so it's already (7/10) * 2 "happinits" = 14/10 = 1 "happinit" + 4/10 of "happinit". More "happinits" = more happiness(obvious?!o)
So the final decision will be made by only you! More happiness or less? More good gifts or less? More not so interesting gifts or less more interesting? You can build a list and then make a poll so you'll get it all sorted and filtered! Yeah, I'm genius!
I hope someone will read it _)

I do hope things work out for you in the future, don't give up and forget about those bridges ! It might not be easy at times, but stay positive regardless of whatever adversities u might face !

As for gifts-wise, it would be more advisable to mix-and-match, spend a portion on bundles and a portion on sales... I'm pretty sure plenty of people will appreciate whatever you're giving away, regardless whether its many small gifts or one big gift.

Take care of yourself, cheers ~

When it comes to giveaways, any giveaway is a good one imo. Peeps will advocate for AAAs of course but in all honestly you should only give as much as you are comfortable with. It was kind of you to ask, but don't fret over popular opinion.

Best of luck to ya and have a good weekend :).

If you feel like you want to spread some joy to several people, and not break the bank, why not go with some relatively cheap games that a lot of people seem to want? Besiege is one of the most wishlisted games in the S.Gifts group, and it's only 7€

And good luck with your new job!
