"Prior to Steam, Valve had problems releasing updates for their online games, such as Counter-Strike, wherein a patch would result in the disconnection of the larger part of the online user base for several days. They decided to make a platform which would update games automatically, and implement better anti-piracy and anti-cheat measures."

I'm aware of the situation and misunderstanding. However I chose to not give a shit because I'm a badass. Furthermore, I clearly specified "Mine were" as to differentiate my post and intention.

I think there should be intelligence- instead of contributor-value, pretty sure that most of the people in this thread wouldn't be allowed to even enter a 'the ship' giveaway then.

I got Steam to play Hoard. Funny enough my old laptop couldn't handle the game and so I bought it for the PSP instead. I didn't really get into Steam until I bought a new comp and saw the summer sales. But I wouldn't have minded just getting Hoard as a direct download. Shame you need to have Steam for that game.

Lol at all those answering their own first steam game :)

Wikipedia's list gives the 1st steam game not to be published by Valve is Darwinia.
The very first game would be CS while the first non Valve developped (but still published by) would be Half-Life: Opposing Force by the great guys at Gearbox Software.

Half-Life 2

Ooooch, how I was angry that I had to be online to register the game. Times has changed. Btw I was hating Steam those days (times has changed x2) as I am hating now Origin. That's the only good sign for Electronic Assholes.

The first game on Steam was Impossible Creatures which was never officially released on Steam. This would also be the first non Valve made Steam game as well.

This was shown on March 22, 2002 at GDC which would put it before CS 1.4 which was released on April 24, 2002.

There is something called Google, my friend.

The Steam client was first made available for download in 2002 during the beta period for Counter-Strike 1.6. At that time, its primary function was streamlining the patch process common in online computer games. Installation and use of Steam was mandatory for Counter-Strike 1.6 beta testers, but Steam remained an optional component. 80,000–300,000 gamers tested the system when it was in its beta period
