Can I choose a whole series...as they're essentially all the same game? If "sure you can"......Civilization. However, If I have been booed down unmercilessly, I'd have to say, Civ IV.
Honourable mention to:
Football Manager Series
Truck Simulator Series
Tropico Series
I know...supposed to choose one game, but us Wombles have never been good at following detailed instructions...what can you do but carry on Wombling?
And happy Saturday all.....

Civilization Series. I have played it from the early days, starting with Civ I (Yes, I am an ancient player). It's like taking an idea or a play and evolve it through time. Add something new, whenever technology and new resources come up. And win. Pretty much what that game is all about. :)

I know, right? Normally, a city with a wall should have higher, massive defense bonus against non-ballistic units. A well-fortified location usually could be hold several months even years, if water and food was available.

It's hard to choose just one and only one. But, if I am allowed, I'd love to write some of my fav games and why ^^
At first: Beyond Good And Evil (what is saddest, I've never finished it...), because I loved idea of taking photos to get the cash. To be honest I guess this game initiated my love to photography :D Especially animals (I do macrophotography)
Next position is: Gothic. One of my first RPGs, overall, first game of all my games (before I had Kao The Kangaroo, Ghost Masters, which I had not understood, old Bionicle game and some Need For Speed game (it was Hot Pursuit 2 I guess, I love it still <3). What charmed me in Gothic - one of first games with open world. Everything was so alive. some monsters didn't just respawn (only few and only with beginning of new chapter). And of course Story <3 it was so innovating, so amazing, at least in my opinion. From time to time I love to replay it again and again. However Piranha Bytes was very little studio then and Gothic is full of bugs, but it is charm of this game, which gives (or was giving) a lot of nerves but still wonderful memories :D
My another pick: Saints Row Franchise. GTA, but with aliens, Demons, tons of better (and darker) humor, better weapons etc. etc. Really, Do I have to write anything else? :D
4th game that charmed me: The Stanley Parable. It's not a game. It's experience. I cannot describe it any better. Just must-play.
Another: This is split, Alan Wake and The Darkness II. In first You fight against Darkness, in second You fight as Darkness. Totally different games. Both amazing.
and shortly few games I fell in love with:
Alice: Madness Returns (really enjoyable gameplay, I love surrealistic scenarios so this game was almost orgasmic for me to play :D),
Prototype serie (blood, demolition and anger. excellent split to play after bad day),
Broforce (being American was never so easy as it is in this game!),
SteamWorld Heist (split of Worms and X-Com with amazing soundtrack by Steam Powered Giraffe. Humorous, cute and somehow can be challenging!),
A Story About My Uncle (cute bedtime story with excellent gameplay. Torture for perfectionists who want to have 100% achievements. Impossible to finish this game with gamepad.),
Spec Ops: The Line (at first sight it is classical Third Person Shooter, but the more You play the weirder it become. Imho this game has totally anti-war message. Some moments are memorable af.)
Nihilumbra (storytelling in this game is beautiful, however sometimes it seems this game is nihilistic, but only thing I have to say is: finish it. You will se more.)
And in the end another 3 games that are remarkable for me:
The Talos Principle - philosophic game that may leave You with tons of reflections and questions about everything around us.
Brothers - A Tale Of Two Sons - the only game I cried at the end. Short (about 3-6 hours) but beautiful. Especially idea of playing as 2 brothers at the same time.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - like my firneed said - it is MMORPG but in single player mode. Beautiful sceneries, nice story (maybe little bit trivial, but entertaining). The best in my opinion was juxtaposition colorful, little bit fairy sceneries with decay of enemies and brutality of fighting. It's RPG with tons of action, fragments of Hack'n'Slash genre and with amazing crafting system. I had to mention excellent main character development system.
Damn. I wanted to write about 2-3 games...

You might want to check out Sleeping Dogs. I recently heard that game described as having better story than GTA and minigames that are more fun than Saints Row. Such an underrated game if that's true.
Alice: Madness Returns ❤ (really enjoyable gameplay, I love surrealistic scenarios so this game was almost orgasmic for me to play :D),
Have you played the first Alice? The combat is clunkier than the sequel, but I've never had a desire to replay the second game (much to my disappointment). The first Alice one the other hand is one of those games I always eventually come back to play again. It's very hard to track down a pc copy unfortunately because it's not sold digitally--I hate when that happens to good games. I think it can be gotten on Playstation network if you have a PS.
Even if you don't have any way to get it I would still strongly recommend checking out the demo.

I heard tons of good things about Sleeping Dogs, but my studies consume my all free time (If I have free time I watch some movies or TV-series [The Young Pope is amazing]) and to the first Alice - there is quick and simple way to unlock DLCs and original game (originally 'unavailable' on steam), only change one line in one file in game. (link I used serial from Steam to activate Alice on Origin [worked fine] and enjoyed everything :D)
and this is how I felt after all the Alice changes:
