Everybody has the right to say whatever they want while it doesn't break rules. And many people just feel nice a kind words, even if they are simple like a "Thank you".

+1 Honestly i'v always found this stupid, why would you thank someone for the chance to get something? Do you thank the lottery every time they "give you the chance" to win? Thank the people who you actually win from, i do, i mailed them back or thanked them on steam. Most people around here only do it for post count anyway, and the ones using the automated thanks are even more pathetic.

Er, because they spent their money on something on you guys instead of themselves?
Let's say I did a giveaway and didn't get ONE "thank you". (aside from the winner, let's say.)
I really doubt I would be willing to do another giveaway, because the users of the site come off as ungrateful assholes.

Let's be honest here, most people who make giveaways make them to boost their CV past certain barriers(like 30.01) or get into the high CV groups. No offence but if you really care about making someone else happy you won't give a shit how many "thanks" replies you got, you will care that someone is happy thanks to you and probably care that the guy said thanks, everything else is just pathetic e-peen stroking and atentionwhoring.

But mine's the biggest. That's what matters.
I completely see the point you're making, but it's completely off putting to the newer users of the site.
The FAQ asks that we be courteous and thank submitters (whether we win or not). I'm more than happy to oblige.
If you don't want to thank the submitter, that's all on you. Don't comment on GAs. But why discourage acts of kindness/gratitude?

There is no way to say whether it really is gratitude or the person is just saying it because everyone else is or the person just wants to keep his post count up or something else.
The example you mentioned earlier.. I'd prefer that actually.. everyone else got nothing from it.. only the person who won got the game.. I feel bad for the ones who actually want it, thank me for it.. but don't get it.. =x

But that's it, i'm not trying to discourage people from thanking, i'm just saying the "thanks" spam is a stupid practice, people should leave an actual comment if they really want to show gratitude not copy+paste "thanks" on every giveaway. I'm also saying that the only person who should feel obligated, by manners and common sense, to thank the creator of the giveaway should be the guy who wins it. And i do get that to some new users it might be off putting however, like i said above, if you're actually doing a giveaway to be nice and make someone happy you won't care either way.

I made my first giveaway... right when joining. I had something lying around in my inventory, is why. :D
And all the thank yous... were spam. A few were nice, but those were above and beyond (so to speak) the "Thank you".
I wouldn't have been put off by no-one spamming the giveaway with meaningless drivel.

The fact that this exists shows that there is a problem.

And this is what happens when you stop them! Great improvement isn't it?

I think people should stop that and be advised to stop it.
Forums are not for "me too" posts (which Thank you spam is). It's just useless babble, taking up space, and time, and -- which for me is the kicker -- hides potentially useful posts.
Should gratitude be assumed?
"The Assumption of Gratitude". Hmm, good book or movie title. Or band name.
