Everybody has the right to say whatever they want while it doesn't break rules. And many people just feel nice a kind words, even if they are simple like a "Thank you".

+1 Honestly i'v always found this stupid, why would you thank someone for the chance to get something? Do you thank the lottery every time they "give you the chance" to win? Thank the people who you actually win from, i do, i mailed them back or thanked them on steam. Most people around here only do it for post count anyway, and the ones using the automated thanks are even more pathetic.

I don't think you can assume gratitude unless you know that person well.
Heck, you can't even be sure whether the person commenting a "thank you" is actually feeling thankful... you have no way of knowing it..
