So I was thinking of organizing my library. It's getting messy. I have to hunt for some of my games. Over 300 games now. I was just curious how you keep your library tidy? So I can get some ideas to sort out my games.

Sheesh. Nearly 1.3k games on your account. I can't even imagine what it's like to navigate your library. You probably have games you didn't even know you had.

That's where I was at with 650. I tried going by genre but then main genres like shooters, strategy, and casual are themselves cluttered. Solution? Break down the genres further: Shooter - First Person, Shooter - Third Person, Strategy - Tower Defense, Strategy - Real Time, Strategy - Turn Based, Simulation - Management, Simulation - Space, Simulation - Mundane, etc. Then you realize you now have a cumbersome list of like 50 genres and even then a good amount of games don't quite fit into any of them or worse they fit into many of them. Solution? Fuck it. Remove categories, use favorites and search...

I sometimes forget about them but I don't really feel the need to organize them differently...I just use favourites but it doesn't really help me in any way :P
I just visualize the games I have installed, and then use the search function when I want to install something

I use the search bar on my library. Most of the time what I look for is there.

I have three categories: F2P, beaten and the default one where is everything else.
No need to organize it further.
Edit: oh, I forgot about the fourth one: Prototypes, it only has those double fine prototypes that were included with their bundle. Cause you know, they aren't really full games.

That question must have been asked at least three times here already, heh. :P

Not much changed since the last time.

COMPLETED - Games I have completed and do not plan on playing again.
DEMO/JUNK - The category describes itself. Junk, free weekends, demos...
HYPE TRAIN - Titled "hype train" due to being too lazy to come up with something better, it contains the games I am currently playing or am planning on playing soon.
NOT PLAYED - Another self describing category. It contains the biggest part of my library, and are all games I have never played yet. I mostly refer to this one as my backlog...
GAMES - Everything else. Which means, games I have played but that are not installed, or that I am simply not interested in resuming my playtime at the moment.

i use this format:
HORROR, RACING, STRATEGY, TEAMPLAY (for coop stuff), TIMPEASS, OTHERS.

You can add same game to multiple categories. This way if i want something thats coop and strategy, i dont have to keep searching in both.

I don't really, much as my 2100+ games need it. I just have Beaten, Broken and Non Steam.

+1. I have about 10-20 genres, it's easier when using Big Screen Mode and when playing with my girlfriend since she's not much of a gamer, by genre we can select something we both will enjoy (as of now platformers, hack n slash and horror seem to work pretty good).

nice man! I have something similar, although I don't make the difference between indie games and franchises. Still I also think in the long run it's pretty neat, everything new you just add it to one of yor favorite categories and you're set

300+ games:

  1. If a game is a part of a series at least of 3 games - separate category for the series (i.e. Hitman, The Witcher, Gothic, etc.)
  2. If game is not a part of any series but it had published by big publisher with decent amount of their titles in my library - publishers's category (i.e. Valve others, Rockstar others, Telltale others, etc.)
  3. Categorizing by genre (i.e. Other FPS, Other strategies, other RPG, etc.)

  • finished
  • BETA etc.
  • Games - everything else

I have almost 900 games and I don't need to divide them into more categories.

Thanks guys. Maybe I will make a junk section for trash games. Games that are junk or I'll probably never play. I'll just use the Search function for the rest.

you can chose to HIDE the junk too, I have a few bundle games that I added when I was new to Steam and now regret since I will never waste my time to play them (Daikatana, Deus Ex The fall and the like) so when adding to a category there is a check box that states HIDE FROM LIBRARY, that was handy

-Finished (that's a category)

I have:

  • Not Played
  • Games to play with friends
  • Causal Games (Games like Audiosurf which you can play anytime again and only for a few minutes with no problem)
  • Games I finished but not a new DLC which I bought
  • Finished and the game I currently play
  • (Trash, but I switched to the new hidden function to hide those games)

I always finish a game before I start a new one (except I dont like the game and will move it to the trash games) so I have no need for a category like 'not 100% finished'
