Interesting. DirectX started off terribly in the immediate wake of OpenGL, but recovered well very quickly.
But I've always kind of had a bitter relationship with it due to it being vendor-specific.
IF the Mantle API is open source, as suggested by the end of the article, that could be very cool. If not, then either it'll be more of the usual AMD/ATI vs. Nvidia thing or if it's exceptionally fast, Nvidia will just end up doing something similar (and the programmers will just have to learn both... again).

Looks promising, but nothing on whether it will need new hardware to take advantage of it or if driver updates will be enough (especially on Nvidia)
