Just wondering.

In a lot of trains or giveaways on the forum, I see 'please bump the thread!' or 'NO BUMP NO WIN!' quite often.

Alot of the time I'll return to the thread, and see somebody has bumped the thread within the last few seconds. If it's been a while since the last bump, I'll post a bump to push it back to the top, but what about you? To me constant bumping seconds apart feels somewhat like spamming the forum, and burying other topics. Do you bump if the thread is already at or near the top of the list?

Do you bump after a train or giveaway, when the topic is already at the top of the forum?

Bumpy potato!

If someone has bumped seconds ago, there's probably no need to bump again. But I generally do it anyway, to show my appreciation for the generosity of the person giving away free games.

This is somewhat what I was thinking. I always bump if there's a "no bump no win" rule in the description, but when I see a bump a few seconds ago it's hard to choose between beeing a potential spammer, or a potential leecher for not even saying thanks.

If the last 10 comments were all "Bump!" and I have nothing creative to add, I agree completely. I'm not adding any value to the conversation. So instead I try to come up with an image, pun, or anything else that at least amuses myself. If I can manage to make someone else smile along the way, so much the better.

This seems like a good way to do it without spamming the forum with bumps. And the gifs/etc I see do make me smile in the long bump trains. :)

If i've just entered their train i think it's kind of a dick move not to bump afterwards.

What if somebody's bumped the train thread a few seconds ago when you return to the thread though? Isn't it then just spamming and hiding other peoples' trains/topics? (Honest question, I'm not entirely sure what to think about the bump situation).

Bump always. Their giveaway, their rules.

Not true. They can't refuse to gift you on the ground that you didn't bump. You can't just make up rules for your giveaway

I wasn't saying that they can refuse to deliver the game, just that if someone is giving you something for free and all that they ask for is a comment on a thread it seems fair enough for me.

If it's been bumped just seconds ago, why not bump it with something meaningful, what you thought about those giveaways, why you entered or so, Or just look for a funny pic or something.
Wait... this could always be done, not only when it just has been bumped.

I know of at least one person here who stands to their words when they say "no bump, no win" so if you want to show a bit respect to the person who spent time to create the train and money to acquire the games, I would do as asked.

I do always say thanks in one way or another (unless asked not to), be it in the giveaways themselves or on the thread topic. These long trains of bumps sometimes look like little more than spam to me, especially when returning to the thread I see bumps posted in the last few seconds.

I'm relatively new to SG, so haven't picked up on all the "etiquette" yet.

About the "no bump, no win", is that actually a valid reason to request a new winner, or is it only about blacklisting? Because not delivering is (unfortunately) not an option that complies with the rules of the site.

Well, back in Sgv1 when we had no blacklist feature and users had to put up a pastebin link to show the users they had in the BL, Support usually granted the GA maker a right to enforce a particular rule in private giveaways (like no bump no win), and they just wanted the GA maker to get approval from them for it at least once. Now, I'm not sure that this is actually valid, because with the introduction of the BL feature, most of the nuances associated with re-rolls earlier (like a BL'd person joining the giveaway) have been cleared, but no one made the distinction for additional custom rules.

So yes, I'd guess it is only about blacklisting, since it would not come under valid reasons for requesting a new winner.

It's definitively no valid reason to request a reroll. I'm aware that not delivering doesn't comply fully with the site rules. But I guess some people see it like this:

  • this site (only) offers a service
  • One (only) has to comply to the rules to use the site / not complying to the rules may lead to exclusion at one point.
  • One own standards can stand above the rules (as long as one's willing to face the consequences)

Yes, I always thank and bump someone after entering their GA, its just a nice thing to do in my opinion.

As a Mint user I really like your penguin ;)

Hehe, thank you ^^

I spent a long time without a Steam avatar, and being a Linux gamer (using Mint), the minty penguin seemed the way to go ;)

To bump or not to bump ya ask. Well. The answer is easy. If it's possible then bump it. Bump it like a boss. Yes.
Sometimes i wait a little with bumping but well. There is no point in having too many tabs open. Yes.

Honestly I try to bump every topic I enter a giveaway on. However I do forget a good bit of the time due to the adhd kicking or someone interrupting my train of thought. No pun intended.

I usually save a link to the threads and bump later when they are not anymore in the front page.

The way I see it there is no need to bump on a thread other than to thank the GA creator but that would be probably better done on the page of the actual GA instead of the thread - since when I do a GA i keep in mind that I`d like the least amount of people to join in order to let those who do join have a higher chance of winning

But since I just started doing GA-s and stuff, and I`ll do them here and there when I get new games and decide to up my level, I will prolly put a jigidi puzzle so that people who spend some effort into completing the puzzle get a chance at the game. (if it is something other than what I would consider trashy games)

I think we've reached the best solution (Draconiano's suggestion of bookmarking and bumping when the thread has dropped down the list).

I'm closing this thread now to keep it from becoming bump-bait itself. ;)

Thanks for your suggestions/answers everybody!
