I love beer. I love exploring the many different styles of beer and comparing different beers from within the same style. I love brewing my own and experimenting with different recipes, ingredients and techniques. I love tasting beer and taking notes of nuances (as my limited senses and knowledge allow), I sometimes even write a short review about a beer that I liked (or one that I didn't). I’m ok with a bit of a buzz, although it’s not a goal in itself. I normally don’t get any buzz because I drink a bottle or so a day and that’s simply not enough to have any such effect on me. I don’t enjoy getting drunk and practically never do.

The poll here unfortunately doesn’t support voting for multiple options, so I'll go for a short survey format...

  • What is your favorite brewery and beer?
  • What is your preferred beer style (pale lager / pilsner, dark lager, IPA, stout, Belgian ale, wheat beer, etc…)? alternatively, what beer style don’t you like? If you (think) you don’t like beer, share your experience too.
  • Have you ever brewed beer at home or considered to?

See the first comment below for a bit about homebrewing and of course the giveaways :-)

Update: Quiz answers. The quiz is here if you want to try it before seeing the answers...

I don’t drink beer. Give me a potato instead!

I prefer Czech and German beer from smaller breweries. My favorite is probably Samson pale lager or Svijany and also Slovakian Golden Pheasant isn't bad.

I haven't tried much beers but Amstel is good and I only tried wheat beers as far as I remember.
I also haven't tried brewing beer, and beer isn't really liked here as we only have 2 beer brewing factories the bigger and more productive one stopped working in 2013 and we don't have any local brewers as people prefer arak or wine instead and those are produced both locally and in government's factories.

What is your favorite brewery and beer?

In New Zealand, my favourite brewery is probably Garage Project in Wellington - lots of experimental stuff, but usually well worth the admission price... Favourite NZ beer is iStout by 8-Wired (a 10% ABV imperial stout which any beer lover should add to their bucket list).

Worldwide, that's harder... Favourite world brewer is currently Brewdog for good beer and and balls the size of watermelons. Anyone who releases beer-stuffed roadkill and calls it a "limited edition" is deserving of much kudos.. Favourite beer at the moment is maybe Liefmans Goudenband, but it changes often :)

What is your preferred beer style (pale lager / pilsner, dark lager, IPA, stout, Belgian ale, wheat beer, etc…)? alternatively, what beer style don’t you like? If you (think) you don’t like beer, share your experience too.

Imperial Stouts, Barleywines or Belgian Tripels/Quads. Generally not a fan of weaker beers (i.e. less than 8%).

Have you ever brewed beer at home or considered to?

Yup. Brewed over 50 batches to date - all sorts of styles. I've had some awesome successes, and some other far less notable efforts...

For me, it's definitely all about the taste. I love beer, but definitely in moderation. Hate getting drunk...

I prefer polish beer myself, I just love the taste of them, especially Zywiec! Though I have nothing against getting drunk, in fact I welcome that, since I know from the start when I go out that I'll drink more than enough to get decently drunk, but I still prefer the taste over the buzz.
Though I hate the darker kinds, especially if it's from any of the british islands, they taste a bit too.. I don't know how to say it in english.. But, yeah..
About brewing beer at home, I've always wanted to, even if it's illegal here in Sweden (though up in the northern parts of the country everyone does it anyways, so maybe I should just move up there instead and just do it..!)

Well I never brewed my own beer but I made plenty of Schnapps and -from that- liqueur (not liquor) whenever I had some spare time.
From left to right: plum schnapps, green walnuts liqueur and coffee + lemon liqueur (an experiment which turned out to be way better than I expected).
What's interesting is that one of the main ingredients for liqueur is schnapps so you are now looking at the evolved version of it in the middle bottle and the one on the right. Whole distillation process is a bit time consuming since it includes 40 days of heating in in the sun (after previously adding sugar and green walnuts) and then you have to filtrate everything later.
Green walnuts one is pretty simple to make and quite strong.

In a pub I would have what the others have since I don't really frequent pubs. If it's nasty stuff I would get something else. Same goes for parties at someone's place. I'm not a fan of beer per se, the thing is it's the cheapest option most of the time.

When it comes to bottled ones I kinda like Budweiser Budvar. (Czechvar in the states, Budweiser trademark dispute never forget T_T) And some wannabe fancy stuff from Primátor. I don't think it has good name among beer enthusiasts/elitists but I don't really care, I'm weird like this.

I am more of a 'Vodka' dude but I will take any beer, depends on how much money I have, as long as it does the job at getting me shitfaced.

Never brewed my own, would be interesting!

My favorite beer is "grolsch kanon"
It is a strong beer, 11,6%. So if you don't drink it for the buzz, don't drink too many because it indeed hits your in the head like a canon.

Personally I prefer to taste a good whisky, unfortunatly they don't come so cheap.

  1. Favorite: Antartica Original and Colorado Appia
  2. Style: Premium Pilsen mostly.
  3. Home Brew: Never... Seems VERY complicated.

My favorite is Antartica Original and the second one is Colorado. If I have to get one, it will be Antartica.
The taste is very soft and leaves no residual taste... which I think is something bad for most beer lovers.
If the beer is very cold, then it is PERFECT for my current weather.
(right now is 37º C and it's raining... just imagine how this is when there's no rain!).
I think I like it because it is usually very refreshing... I mean, the preference maybe was set up beyond taste... never thought about it.

Homebrewing has come a long long ways in the last few years, and many breweries are starting to even offer recipe kits to make your favorite beer or something similar to it at home. We now have 2 different homebrew shops here in town, along with a lot of farmers starting to put in hops and barley since they've seen the market demands for them.

I've never tried either of those beers but I have heard good things about the Appia, one of the few beers that uses honey and wheat out there that I know of. A soft, crisp, refreshing taste can do very well in certain situations even for a beer lover lol and the no residual taste I think is something people look for, at least the guys and gals I drink with at our tastings do. A beer that delivers a good quality flavor profile but doesn't linger on the tongue and cloud your tastebuds is the mark of a well crafted ale.

Also, Bump for 11 hours and counting until my liver is put through the biggest test of the year. Surly Darkness Day 2015 and Bottleshare event here we go! It starts tomorrow. I will try to remember to take pictures and get a list of everything I drink, but I make no promises. Last year I don't remember anything past 9pm and we got there at 6pm.

Brewing here seems expensive since the whole idea came from other places than Brazil...
I think there should exist a very good reason to people avoid this practice because we enjoy to drink... I said it was complicated because I'I've been in a factory once and there's some serious chemistry involved to do it right. Besides I never see beer ingredients being selled anywhere around here in my town... all thise little things together makes the brewing not much popular as it should be considering our beverage preferences...

I was about to ask you pictures and videos of it!
Where do you live? Do people do things like that to buzz or taste beers?
(sorry for more typos than normal... I'm on phone)

There's a big difference between stove top or kit brewing at home and making recipes on a large scale that taste the same every batch.

I live in South Dakota, Surly is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This will be my second year attending the festival, and I plan on keeping it a long running tradition. I'll see if I can dig up any of last years pictures, not sure if I saved them or not. It's all about tasting new beers, trying the rare stuff you have always wanted to, drinking a lot of homebrew stuff and talking beer with other beer geeks. There is a little trading that goes on, but for the most part it's one big huge beer sharing event, that ends up with a lot of drunk people because there's about 3500 people ( at least, last year just for wristbands there were over 2000 in line to purchase Darkness ) I would estimate that are there throughout the day/night.

Hi, got the link to this thread from Bierzerkers giveaway :)

Most of beers in Russia is a top quality Pißwasser which you chug one after another and get smashed. Add 1 shot of vodka to 1 pint of beer and you get Yorsh, which will knock you out faster than if you drink vodka and beer separately. But beer lovers can find imported beers in some malls.

  1. I really like beers from Paulaner (Germany) and Belhaven (Scotland).
  2. I can't say that I have the most or the least favorite kind of beer. But I tend to like stouts more.
  3. I was interested in home brewing, but thought that it is too complicated for me when I found this site.

Baltika 6 is a really excellent porter. I drink it regularly. I've had other beers they make, but none registered as anything exceptional. Maybe because I'm not a huge fan of pale lagers.

I'm trying not to peep into the guide you linked, because I'm planning to add a post to this thread about the subject (with GAs, yay!)

Wow, I have never tried or even seen it in the shops. My guess is that they make it only for export. Baltika is actually one of the cheapest beers here, and one of the shittiest. It's mostly just a beer flavored soda drink mixed alcohol. So I guess that the ones that get exported are actually brewed and can be called beer :)

Okay, just wanted to share :)

You can read user reviews about Baltika 6 here. Overall it ranks much higher than their other beers. I wouldn't exactly describe the ones I tried as "beer flavored soda", but they were as boring to me as most other pale lagers. I don't understand why this style of beer is (by far) the most popular in the world. Even the better ones are uninspiring.

Being no expert in beers I can't say anything against lagers, but I definitely like the mouthful of flavors you get from darker beers :)

And I think that all men have desire to start brewing their own beer, or try it at least. Just like this guy here:)

Now, you're talking my language :)

My local is The Talbot, the tap house for Amber Ales which produce a decent range of ales, Revolution bring my personal favourite.

I've been a member of CAMRA for over 25 years, although now with a young family I'm not an active member. I'm lucky enough that Derby, the nearest city to where I live currently hosts the Great British Winter Beer Festival, which I can recommend to any beer drinker :) Fantastic range of beers in a stunning venue.

I've never brewed my own beer (not really got the time) but my wife has but with no real success to be honest (although some of her home made wine has been excellent).

My favourite brewery and beer? Well there are so many excellent ones to choose from in the UK but if I had to pick I'd go for Oakham and their Citra, luckily a reasonably regular guest ale at the Talbot and occasional beer at The Beehive/Honeypot, the local pub to my allotment

My preference is for hoppy beers but I also like a good porter or stout but prefer them not too strong, around 4% is ideal for me :) I'm not a big fan of bottled beer; I prefer hand pulled or gravity fed beers

  • I drink Heineken. Yes, I know, it's not the best beer around, but you can find it everywhere and it tastes nice, so it's my favorite commercial beer.
  • Pale lager. I dislike light beers. Every Greek dislikes light beers. :B I also dislike beers without alcohol and I don't really like the red ones.
  • Never brewed beer, but I've considered brewing beer and making many other alcoholic drinks too. :B

I can see two valid reasons for not drinking beer:

  1. One's religion forbids it. Perhaps alcohol-free beer can be a solution, some taste fine (way better than caffeine-free coffee compared to proper coffee)
  2. Not trying the right beer. Most people only get a chance to try pale lagers, so if they didn't like what they tried, it doesn't mean they won't like a different style.

About the potato option, this is the first time I use it in a poll (unless you consider to be a Dan Quayle potato). This thread being about food simply made this option more tempting than it normally is.

  • A religion that forbids beer won't have my support. :B
  • I tried a lot of beers, but I can't find them everyday. I'm also drinking some good Greek beers from time to time, but I mostly drink Heineken.

Brewing 46-48 l of beer usually takes me 7-8 hours with cleaning everything (plus time for grain grinding)
Bottling i think 3-4 h (cleaning 100 bottles is painful)
