Not a confirmation that they will be on Steam, but it's still something significant.

As someone who never really got the chance to play the games, I can't help but feel excited :P

Boo, I'm only apart of Halo 3 group D:
I enjoyed Halo 3 so much, as long as there's no new type of third-party DRM from Microsoft (or any attached) I'll gladly get the games.

I doubt there would be additional DRM, assuming Microsoft Game Studios are involved.

Black?? I have both games in my old XBOX (Black and Halo) and Halo have better graphics, better story... Black only have spectacularity and explosions but in almost all things is worse than Halo Combat Evolved.

Seeing as how Microsoft's shutting down GFWL, and already brought stuff back to Steam like Age of Empires II, III, and Halo: Spartan Assault game, I'm not surprised they go all Steam now. Good stuff, I like Halo for the most part. Halo 3 better be a good port.

I loved hearing that news about GFWL. Finally a studio has the sense to stop trying to take on Steam with an inferior and less experienced product.

Now if only EA could stop being so stubborn and start thinking logically lol.

Well, without competition, Steam would become a monopoly. They would stop giving us so many sales because if we get mad that they stop, they could just say, "Well, who else are you going to buy games from?"

Indeed, competition is a good thing. But less exclusivity would be nicer.

Yup, Microsoft stops doing new games, they saw with AoEII and AoM that releasing old games with an "HD" in the name at 30$ works very well and is an easy way to make money.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, since I didn't actually play the original Age of Mythology back in the day, but isn't this new "Extended Edition" an actual tangible upgrade? It even says improved graphics, etc on the store page.

my problem is they dont appear to have added any new content despite calling it extended

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it is, but I doubt the graphics are that much better anyways in my opinion 30 dollar is quite alot for it. PS. Hi arren.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not tangible at all, they just added shadow to the characters and day/night cycle, big deal. The game itself is exactly the same as before, even the "extra" content they're talking about is just old extensions of the game. What they added is more like what you can find in a average patch not a 30$ thing. There is the multiplayer but in AoEII, it doesn't even work as intended so again 30$ for a non-working multiplayer is a ripoff. You can find the Gold Edition of the game (AoM + extension) for 5$ and you can play multiplayer with various methods.

Very doubtful, though I'd have a free copy of the original if it did happen.

If they do come to PC, I doubt they'll be straight up ports. They'll probably have steam achievements, compatibility patches and a host of other added features. So I highly doubt your retail key will get you a free copy of the updated version :/

Got to wonder if the original will be the PC port of Combat Evolved or a port of Anniversary.

Permalink

That's a good question. As conjecture suggests Halo 3 coming to PC then the remake of Halo with Halo 3 assets could be possible.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I reckon they'll add the Anniversary version. They'll probably need to add many patches to get Combat Evolved optimised for current systems, so they may as well just adapt Anniversary.

No patches needed, actually. I have a disc copy, works fine in Windows 7. I imagine they would include the Gearbox multiplayer patch though.

Really? That's great news! But I still doubt they can just release combat evolved as is. Chances are some people will have compatibility issues, then there's the widescreen support, fov slider, and other little options us picky modern PC gamers can't live without :P

The database entries for the games where added about a year ago, but the groups where only made partially visible recently. (I can't get in them but some people apparently did.)

Yes, I remember seeing the database entries and expecting them a long time ago, but no luck :( If you want to get into the groups, there's a thread in the Spartan Assault community hub made by people already in the groups. They can invite you.

You can do it yourself though. Just go on a game hub for a game you can join, right click on the "Join Group" link and copy the location. Then you just substitute the game app ID with the ID for Halo CE/2/3 and you get redirected to the main store page but you can check your activities page to see if you joined or not. :D

I never understood why people were so excited about Halo. Had it on the Xbox and it was a very mediocre, unoriginal shooter with badly designed aliens and linear and extremely repetitive levels. I still remember the alien ship, simply because it was the worst level design I've ever seen in a shooter. It was made out of dozens of copy/paste rooms and I nearly fell asleep while shooting my way through. And then I had to get through all of it again when the flood was released. Unbelievable.

Only good thing I remember was the atmosphere/music, some of the outdoor levels felt 'magical'.

Maybe the multiplayer was great for its time, never played it.

Console shooters? Maybe, but the Xbox was the first console from a western company (Microsoft as opposed to Sony or Nintendo) that had the technical requirements to do that and it was a launch title, so that's not as special as you make it sound. And there were still lots of shooters on the PS1 already. Plus it's consoles, for the shooter genre in general it didn't matter as there were literally hundreds of shooters before Halo on PC, shooters with better level design and gameplay.

Mainstream appreciation of Sci-Fi shooters? I guess Goat Simulator did the same for goat simulations then. And don't forget Doom, which is best known for making the demon shooter genre popular. Oh, and Unreal of course, which made the...eh...Sci-Fi shooter genre popular?

I never played it's multiplayer so I can't say how good it was, but there was a crap ton of awesome multiplayer games before Halo already. Unreal Tournament, Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Counter Strike to name only a few titles that were really innovative and that people still play even nowadays, unlike Halo. And tbh I seriously doubt that Halo was even close to the innovation and awesomeness of those titles. Heck, it didn't even have online multiplayer apparently (read that on the Wiki).

I remember the loadout limitations and recharging shields as one of its praised features. Call of Duty (can't remember which part) introduced the 'no health bar' system, but I don't think that alone makes it a super innovative and awesome game only because many titles nowadays use it. Halo was the first game that used those features and that's a nice, but very small innovation that's barely worth a footnote in the history of computer gaming.

Vehicle combat was done in shooters and many other games before. Red Faction, Battlezone or Operation Flashpoint to name just a few of the top of my head.

No idea about AI, guess it was pretty good, but I'm sure I would have noticed if it was lightyears ahead of any other shooter of that time.

Absolutely no idea about enemy spawning.

Narrative was done just as good in many other games (though I admit it was done pretty well apart from the lackluster ending, no (other) complaints there), Half-Life for example wasn't worse and it was released a few years before already.

I can agree that Halo was a step forward for console shooters, but for shooters in general? Nope. From a PC point of view it was just a decent shooter with bad level design, and some small, but admittedly innovative new features.

If it would have been a PC shooter it would have been unoriginal and mediocre. The only thing their influence did was make games shittier (/easier). :p

Little info: Haters only hate the newer CoD's, don't be so clueless if you want to act like a smartass. Most of them were great back in the days, MW2 was the first that went downhill, afterwards they were all garbage. You heavily missed out if you never played any of the older CoDs.

And since you seem new to Steam, I highly doubt you realise Steam only started tracking gametime since 2009 or so, my Top5 would look totally different. Oh well, fanboys always get butthurt when I say their lovely game is only mediocre for PC standards :x

Comment has been collapsed.

lol.. Perfect Dark, N64. Battlezone. Half-life. Halo wasn't the only one to innovate, nor the first, in the things you mentioned. And the guy you're replying to's comment still stands. It was simply reiteration after reiteration of the same damn thing, over and over, each level. Nothing felt new or fresh while playing, as you progressed. It was bland and mediocre, and design-wise I always felt it was very, very smoothed out and generic.

Eh.. I guess I am strange since I thought the Halo games where mediocre. Sure compared to other fps on CONSOLE it was great. Not soo much with pc. Keep in mind, I only played the first one, and a few matches of.. think it was halo 2 or 3.. vs friends.

Might pick it up if it dose pop up on steam and its dirt cheap.. otherwise probably wont buy it. At least this is potentially good news for those who seem to love the series.

These groups have been here since February of 2013, and were joinable until June. (it was not joinable on PC a day or two after the leak but you could still go on Steam Mobile and join and comment and view group members but they patched that aswell). They haven't reappeared but people just haven't noticed them until SA's release because no one bothered to look them up on steam.
