Are Video Game Movies fun?
i love that imp suit with rubbery fingers, also one of the imps shoots a fireball from his crotch, glad they left that in

I used to watch them but they all tend to drop the ball for the same reason. The movie creators have almost no idea what the game is about. Here are some I recommend you should NEVER watch:
1) Never watch any of the resident evil spin-off movies with Milla Jovovich...NEVER (Unless you have not played the games. or unless you have an open mind and will not be offended with the main characters playing second fiddle). Instead watch the official animated movies (Resident Evil Degeneration, Damnation and Vendetta)
2) Don't watch either HITMAN movie...both are an insult to 47
3) No don't watch any Tomb Raider either
4) Skip the old Street fighter movie and just watch Assassins Fist, then skip the season after that
5) Skip Max Payne...just don't bother
Those that are worth watching...& I'll tell you why:
1) Final Fantasy VII: Advent children - self explanatory
2) Prince of Persia - Its not perfect, but Jordan Mechner, the original game creator was consulted during the movie...which is why its really good. (This is where a lot of game movies mess up, just look at the almost disastrous Sonic was saved my fans who knew more than the movie creators). Everyone working on a game movie should play and finish all the games...then write an essay...lol
3) DOOM (2005) - I liked it because they wrote a different story to explain the existence of the Aliens / demons and tied it in nicely.
4) Mortal Kombat - self explanatory. The Legacy series is also good
5) Street Fighter: Assassins Fist - best portrayal of Ken and Ryu I've ever seen. Sad the next season wasn't so awesome
6) The Witcher - Acting and character portrayal is very good, especially for Geralt
7) Resident Evil: Degeneration, Damnation and Vendetta - all self explanatory. Damnation is my fav tho
If I remember any others I'll add them

What do you mean next season? I don't think they ever made another one. Which is what I disliked about it. It was awesome, but then simply stopped.

Its Street Fighter: Resurrection. I guess its ok but I don't think they thought it through when they decided to skip the entire story arc and jump straight to V

From the first 1-5 list I cannot agree more with you. Max Payne was such a letdown. From all the actors they had to pick the worst guy for the role, Sam Lake could have done It 100 times better. I dream with a Max Payne movie with the Directors of the first Sin City or maybe Panos Cosmatos and a good cast.
I watched one Final Fantasy movie long ago just because of the CGI. It felt pretty boring, I'm pretty sure It aint the one you wrote.
I wonder if you really feel that Mortal Kombat is a good movie or It's just because the SF one with Van Damme sucks that much.
Need to watch second list #1,2,3,5 and maybe one of your RE recommendations.

The Witcher is not a game adaptation but a book adaptation (author of books gets really stingy if you mix it up xd).
Personally I think first RE movie with Mila was quite good.
Prince of Persia should be rather called Pirates of Persia,- nice movie but doesn't capture any of game "spirit"
Old Street Fighter is guilty pleasure for me xd
And please, if any of you did not see Assassins Creed movie - don't, may be by far worst.

Thanks, I keep forgetting The Witcher is a book.
The only Mila RE movie I liked was the first one when there was still some order, before they went full bananas.
I blame the lack of spirit in Prince of Persia on Disney and they desire to add a laugh to everything, still there was some humor in Sands of Time.
I did watch some parts of Assassins Creed and I'm so happy I forgot all about it. :-D

About Sands of time - it was our Prince against all them sand creatures most of the time, probably doesn't translate well into movie.
I also enjoyed warcraft movie, may be that i do not know much about warcraft lore.

The old one is a bad AAA production. The new one is simply a cheap trash b-movie.

Super mario has to be seen many times to like it. It's a movie full of tiny awesome details.
I liked a lot the Warcraft movie, but maybe I'm the only one in the world.

Doom was pretty bad. I'd rate it more like a 4/10. If you enjoy watching bad movies (which I truly do), I can also recommend the Far Cry movie. Truly hilarious. Maybe a 1-2/10.

Yeah, I mean that one. ^^ I really didn't like it at all. The FPS scene was great, sure. But that was like a 1.5 minutes. The rest was just nonsense.

I recently watched this movie, and it is amazing. Strongly reccomended to any fans of the franchise, and also to the ones who still don't know about it ;)

Max Payne was awful IMO, for such game you expect action-packed movie, but there is absolute boredom in that film.
DOOM was alright when i watched in time when it was out, but i rewatched and it was meh, good POV scene though.
Mortal Kombat films also example of great watch when i was a kid, right now its bad.
First two RE movies were alright, after that franchise was a trainwreck. Also Capcom animated films were pretty good.
I really liked Prince of Persia, good entertainment, really cant understand hate that movie got when it was out.
Tekken - terrible film, absolutely forgettable.
Need for Speed was okay, i guess.
Silent Hill was decent, sequel was unwatchable mess though.
Assassins Creed really boring film, cant believe Ubisoft had faith in that movie.
Uwe Boll films - trash, how he ended up to butcher so many games into terrible movies is beyond me.

Oddly, I didn’t expect action packed for max Payne. The game wasn’t just an action packed shooter, it’s film noir elements and aesthetics set it apart from other games just as much as the bullet time. I thought the look, feel, and pacing of the movie were perfect

That 2018 Tomb Raider movie was a decent low-budget movie with a high budget marketing team. You recognize an actor or two, but they're still minor actors from other stuff. The CGI isn't the worst, but it's obviously cheap. The story isn't awful, but you know it was slapdash and rushed.

But it also shows you don’t need big budgets to make a good movie. Would A-list actors improve anything? (Dragon Siege was awful despite a great cast)
not to mention, the main cast, like Dominic West and Walter Goggins, are really good actors, even if they’re not ‘stars’

One that i reccomend is the first Final fantasy movie, When i was watching this CG move i feel that i was looking for real people characters, but a minutes watching this movie i've looked at them and.....is computer animation characters. Was impressive when i've watching this movie for the first time. (in early 2000's).

Super Mario Bros: weird, not good, but kind of awesome. Definite 80s/90s weirdness
Hahaha, you nailed it.
While not an actual video game movie, Crank 2: High Voltage is the most game-like movie I've ever seen. It's a blast.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and it's sequel may not be cinematic masterpieces, but they are fun action adventure romps.

silent hill movie was the best game movie ever.
silent hill 2 movie is never to be talked about just like postal3 the game.

Old '90s movies are mostly in the "so bad it's so good" category (I'm thinking of Super Mario and Street Fighter here, but also Mortal Kombat that was a bit better overall). They are actually horrible, but they capture that "I'd like to see a movie based on my pixel-y videogames" feeling we had as kids. There are many videogame elements crammed into otherwise nonsensical movies.
All the Uwe Boll movies (Alone in the Dark, Bloodrayne etc) are skippable, they are "so bad it's... just so bad".
Doom is mixed bag. If you skip the fact it's Doom, it's an average sci-fi action movie. It doesn't have many "Doom" elements with the exception of a first person section that "looks a bit like Doom" (there are a few recognizable Doom monsters)
Tomb Raider (with A.Jolie) is actually a decent take on old Tomb Raider series, while the new movie (with A.Vikander) is quite faithful to the reboot of the saga. They are both enjoyable action movies.
Silent Hill is quite good. I'm not a big fan of the videogame saga, but the movie really captures that "doom and gloom" sensation you feel while playing the game.
Resident Evil is good as long as you are not a fan of the saga. I'm not, and I enjoyed watching Alice chew bubblegum and kick ass, as she was all out of bubblegum all the time. It's really not a movie that takes itself seriously and director P.W.Anderson loves all the over the top stuff.
I know she has no part in the videogame, and that upsets actual fans, but, hey, I love Milla Jovovich. And I love Michelle Rodriguez almost as much. So watching them together in a movie (the first one) was some sort of dream come true.
Assassin's Creed was, uh, totally unremarkable. Not "horrible", but entirely forgettable.
Warcraft was actually quite good. I'd like to see more, but it kind of tanked at the box office so we won't probably see another for quite some time.
Final Fantasy Spirits Within is awesome. Considering Final Fantasy doesn't really have any sort of "continuity" as a saga (setting and characters are very different between titles, with some being the run of the mill fantasy setting and others being dieselpunk or retro-futuristic), you can't even blame the authors for the movie having an unrelated story.
Comment has been collapsed.
Most of them are just too predictable and story poor to get excited about. Did love the first Final Fantasy as others have mentioned and Silent Hill was well done - probably had more to work with in the first place.
One that's been overlooked so far Halo: The Fall of Reach, which I didn't hate as much as I thought I would. I'm still waiting for that live action Halo movie that keeps almost never happening.

Out of boredom, I recently watched some video game movies.
Super Mario Bros: weird, not good, but kind of awesome. Definite 80s/90s weirdness
Doom: solid 7/10 action movie. Love the FPS part
Max Payne: amazing job with the visuals. Really captures the aesthetics of the game. Marky Mark and Mila Kunis are always watchable
Dungeon siege: low budget lord of the rings knockoff. What you’d expect in the dollar dvd bin.
(Honorable mention: resident evil. Probably the best, certainly the most successful, adaptations)
What do y’all think of video game movies?
