I've seen many giveaway creators stated that they'd blacklist everyone who said thank, but still tons of people still thanked and crawled their ways into blacklist. Did they have no time to check the description, or they were just so eager to say thanks no matter what?

Thanks

Pff this bot thought it was a giveaway :))

i think because lots of ppl are using bots to enter in tons of giveaways.

make an auto-thanking bot, someone sure had lots of time :)) why, the bot should be entering GAs only, why bother thanking?

Because the site encourages users to thank in the guidelines.

We encourage users to write comments thanking the giveaway creator for their generosity, although this is not required.

I so wish they wouldn't do that… Any time you'd think the message box indicates something meaningful, it is just a dozen "thanks" messages from entries wasting time and space in the message list.

Or they could add a "thank you" button like on most forums and/or add the ability to disable comments on your giveaway if you want to.

I don't find myself having high expectations of the SG staff, especially with so many seemingly obvious issues/updates the site is in need of.

At this point, there's so many things that could be improved, it feels like making suggestions is just a wasted effort. :/

But, y'know.
+1, just in case.

I can get behind that. That is a nice, clean, simple idea.
Also an idea done on many other forums.
I like SG and I think it is probably the best (Steam-related) giveaway site, but it has some fundamental level problems… -.-

I like getting "thanks" messages, so what I think they should do is simply allow the giveaway creator to enable / disable comments anytime they want.

Except, I like interacting with -actual non-bot/spammer people-.

They tell me interesting stories, introduce me to new things, etc.
It's very enjoyable, and expands my whitelist to boot.

At the very least, I'd like to be able to filter out thanks messages from my inbox, or even to be able to manually delete them in the giveaway. Anything to prevent them from hiding more important messages with their clutter.
Doesn't help the 'ooh, new messag- oh, nevermind' bit, but it does help the rest.

If you like interacting with people, I think the best thing to do is to create private giveaways.

..you do realize how that makes no sense at all, as written.

I assume, however, you mean creating threads and then establishing giveaways through communication-based-conditions in those?

What do you mean? By creating private giveaways and posting them on the forums the chances of getting those comments are very small.

I had made a post requesting this very feature. It had many replies and many supporting it but after a few days of no replies it got lost in the shuffle and was being ignored so I closed it. I give up trying to suggest things around here and just live with it since it seems that there's only one person who can make decisions around here and he seldom responds.

Yeah, I know… :P
Still, I kinda like when only the GA winner leaves a thanks message. I reply to it, and all is good. I really don't need the additional ones, unless they really add in something related to the game. And that happened to me… thrice, maybe?

Yeah, I imagine there are people like you. Still, at least the thing someone mentioned above, make it controllable by the GA creator.
I know there is a userscript that combines these generic messages, but it cannot filter them out of the inbox. :/

Because there are people who will blacklist you for not saying thanks. It's also mandatory for your acceptance in certain private groups.

I thank the giveaway creator upon entering about 9 times out of 10. Sometimes it's a bit out of habit, but since I only enter for games I want to play, I'm always thankful that the gifter chose to spend any kind of money to give a game to strangers.

Thank- oh wait
Because you're giving something, so they're thanking you!
Not all of them are bots
Some of them just saw many people saying "thanks" so they're saying it too without actually know that many of them are bots
Well, some of us are happy too with those "thanks"... maybe? Besides from spam messages xD

The topic is 'saying thanks when asked not to' :P

Noone is arguing against thanking in general, as far as I've noticed.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It used to be beneficial for people who use scripts to say thanks/etc, regardless if they meant it or not. This is no longer the case, but people probably forgot to update their scripts.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

2 reasons to ask users not to post thanks:

  • because people use bots to auto-enter and scripts that ignore the descriptions (like a JOIN button on the homepage on each GA).
  • because some GA creators don't like their inbox filled with "thanks" replies each day.

i don't agree with the last one, but if people take 10 seconds to open each GA they enter and read the description, they will avoid all blacklists in this cases.

Permalink

Well, the thing about respect is, it's a matter of acknowledging someone else's perspectives and opinions.

At the very least, it means someone couldn't be bothered to read the description, thus instantly negating the thank you they posted; or that they deliberately posted it, as 'no, screw you' element.

Likewise, some people appreciate the comments, and it's nice when people cater to those expectations, as well.

It's about expressing gratitude and appropriate respect to someone who has theoretically earned it-
Not about doing things however you want without thinking of the meaning involved.

And that's where the conflicts come in :/

Personally, I find the thank you/etc thing non-important- But the fact that people would deliberately spam me when I asked them not to, that bothers me :/

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it's not an issue with people saying "thanks" or any variation, the problem is those autocomments and bots are set to reply with "thanks", so... that word becomes mindless spam and it's annoying.

there's also people posting the same 3-4 gifs in every GA they enter, or the same sentence "thanks, you are absolutely f** awesome!!!"

it's sad to see people exploiting the system just to get something for free with minimal effort.

Permalink

I don't fault anyone for not knowing what to say in a situation, or having a 'catchphrase' response..
It's just the attitude the people in question have ("if you don't let me do my things/cater to me, you're my enemy"), that causes complications :X
(See DownwardConcept's comments just below for clearer examples.)

But yeah, the spam isn't fun either; but it's the same attitude that lets people think they should react in such a way, that has them mindlessly making the comments in the first place.

In other words, a 'thank you' from someone who doesn't know what to say is VERY different from a 'thank you' from someone who is using bots/doesn't give a damn, even if they're written identically :/

And so long as you've got entitled, careless spammers/exploiters pushing that sort of stress on creators, it'll make genuine 'thank yous' feel more like part of that stress, than expressions of gratitude.
And that's a shame :(

A mixture of various reasons.
Some people auto-enter and auto-comment. Some are just completely ignoring the description of giveaways.
But it works the other way around as well. Sometimes I have seen people specifically asking for a comment, myself included and people enter without saying anything.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I find that not especially rude- there are so many reasons that may occur.
You may find yourself with nothing meaningful to say. You may be pressed for time. Etc.

On the other side, if you have time to type out a thank you, you have time to glance at the description for 10 seconds and see if it says anything about not doing so :P

Well, that's a minor nuisance.
The real issue is when someone starts cursing you out or yelling at you, because you 'dared' to ask them not to post a thank you.
That's just.. mind-boggling.

And that happens a lot, even :/

I had some discussions over time about commenting and not commenting and people told me they didn't know what to say or didn't had time, so they copy/pasted a thank you over 3 giveaways they've won.
I see it this way: If you don't know what to say or don't have the time, why not mention it beforehand?

And yeah, there are a lot of people feeling mistreated and ultimately are just disrespectful towards the giveaway's creator.
Too high level restriction? How dare you leaving me out! Asking for a simple thing, maybe a little conversation? How dare you to think I would have time for you!

It's just sad that people invest their time and money into giveaways, sometimes even money they don't have and didn't use for games for themselves in the first place and get treated this way, because people feel so entitled.

Because I'm genuinely grateful to see any contributions on Steamgifts. As far as I'm concern, I don't need any other reason.
Heck, I even sometimes comment on giveaways I don't enter, to say something about the game, group or the giveaway itself.
