I have a p4 3.2 with 3 gb ram and a 9500 gt vid card and I have hundreds of games to play... I can even play many "new" games. You might be surprised what an old single core can do. check some videos on youtube by fedskatheone. here is a list I made awhile back on amazon showing some newer games that are playable on my system.

The 2 CPU thing is just hyperthreading on the chip reporting the physical processor to the OS as 2 logical processors. Quite the nice trick intel cooked up all those years ago to squeeze more power out of their CPU cores.

No, if you want to win a "PC" measuring contest with just your CPU, you're going to have to throw something like "dual xeon e5-2687w" or something crazy like that, because there are people that build those systems. They're crazy expensive, but then again some people are crazy (and the subjects of my huge envy in this case).

Permalink

Not necessarily.
For gaming, yes, still much more than you'll need (unless you use some of it as a RAM disk which is awesome).
For rendering, like RaPtUrA mentioned, it is quite useful).

Also, RAM is dirt cheap, so there's little reason to not do 16GB right now.
