When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.

We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.

Uhm...that is the very definition of free to play if you ask me. Get the base game for free, pay for everything else. At least there is no monthly subscription/premium crap like in most other f2p titles.

UT2k4 is one of the best games I've played, put hundreds of hours into it. Too bad UT3 was a step backwards. Overall I'm still glad to see another UT game (despite the f2p approach), the series was too good to let it die.

UT2k4 was a step backwards if you ask me, UT3 tried to bring it back to the original feel and failed, that is all.

I am not so excited for a free UT to be honest...I mean I will try it but meh...this might turn ugly.

Guess that depends on the game modes you wanted to play. I liked DM/TDM and CTF (which many people believe were better in UT99), but I preferred (Vehicle) Assault, Onslaught and VCTF in UT2K4.

I'm very sceptical about the f2p approach as well. Just wish UT3 would have been better and we'd get a regular UT4 with Steam Workshop support, that would be great.

"that is the very definition of free to play if you ask me."

It's more Valve-style Free to Play than standard cash shop free to play though. Meaning, it's community supplying and content and profiting from it too.

It looks like game modes, skins, maps - everything will be sold on the market. That's not Valve f2p. What I really liked about UT2k4 was the huge amount of custom maps and game modes, you could basically play a new (often weird) map or mode every day and never get bored. If people start to sell their stuff in UT4 then all this will be lost and in the end the game will die just like UT3. Just look at all those kiddies trying to sell (= advertising them so they get added to the game) their crappy CS:GO weapon textures. Anyone who is able to open a (pirated) copy of Photoshop will try to sell his stuff, say goodbye to free mods.

This is awesome. Can't wait to see what everybody, together, comes up with as a final version and for it

Unfortunately, I am disappointed. I actually liked Unreal Tournament 3, but that is because I never got into 2004. I wanted to so badly, but I did not have a computer then so I would watch other people play it on that TV show "Arena" on G4TV... :| I have it, but it feels so dead, like all unreal games. Like, there is people on so I guess it isn't technically dead but the "spirit" isn't or something. Everyone feels like bots almost, it is -in fact- sometimes hard to tell who are bots and who are humans.

As for this, I will keep my eyes open for it, but TF2's system is scary terrible. As for them making money off other people's work... that sounds kinda awesome and I hope it is more like that. More awesome games like Killing Floor might make an appearance with their support.
