I remember devs gave like at least 1000 keys when it released, maybe more.

devs gave away 10,000+ keys when it released.

One of my friends commented this on my profile:

Also, I do believe that at one time they stated "Send an email telling us why we should give you a copy and you might get one," or something to that effect. Also, I think it was on sale for <$1 (which is when I got it).
